88歳おじいちゃんの渡米記🇺🇸第一日目④「スタンフォードの塔から見晴らす夢景色」

車はどこをどう走ったか判らぬまま、パロアルトの史子の玄関に横付けにされる。このパロアルトはサンノゼ市とサンフランシスコ市のしょうしょうサンノゼ寄りに位置する静かな中流階級の住宅地である。

I had no idea where we were going, when suddenly the car pulled up at Ayako's front door. Palo Alto is located between San Francisco and San Jose, slightly closer to San Jose, and it is a quiet, middle-class residential area.

さて史子の玄関といっても日本のようにきらびやかではない。一本の名も知らぬ庭木の元に朽ちた古木が横たわり、その周囲にシクラメンや、これ又名も知らぬ草花が配され、極めて自然の情景がかもし出 れている。一歩中に入ると、そこは応接間であり、色々な調度品で飾られている。ここを家主と共有しているという。右手の階段を上って左の十畳程の部屋が史子の専用ルームである。中央にベッドを配し周囲は女らしい飾物が並べられているが、余り派手好きではないらしい。 我等はここを寝ぐらに、いよいよカリフォルニアの旅の始まりである。

Ayako's front yard was not at all showy like the entrance to a Japanese house. An old tree had fallen at the base of a shrub whose name I did not know, and around it grew cyclamen and some more unfamiliar plants. The scene evoked a natural landscape. Just inside the door, there was a furnished parlor, which Ayako shared with the landlady. We went up a staircase on the right, and Ayako's room was upstairs on the left side, about ten mats large. There was a bed in the middle of the room, which was decorated in a feminine style, but Ayako did not seem to have flashy tastes. With this house as our nest, our travels in California got underway.

小憩して、ミスターマイクの案内でアメリカでも有名校の一つスタンフォード大学へ。この大学は昨年（１９９４年）日本の天皇皇后両陛下が御来臨になり、又アグネス･チャン氏の学ばれた大学である。ミスターマイクはこの大学のコンピューター･サイエンス部院生である。以前ツアーガイドのアルバイトをしていたことがあるので、構内隅なく案内してくれる。細々説明を聞きながら、最後フーバー･タワーヘ上る。フーバー･タワーは、フーバー大統領がこの出身なので、その名が冠せられたと聞く。一階にはフーバー氏の記念品が展示されている。

After a short rest, Mr. Mike led us on a tour of Stanford University, one of the most famous colleges in the whole country. Last year (1994), Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan came to visit the school, and Mrs. Agnes Chan had studied here. Mr. Mike was a graduate student in computer science at Stanford, and since he had once worked part-time as a tour guide there, he told us all about the campus. We listened to his detailed explanations and ended up at Hoover Tower. Mr. Mike said the tower had been named after President Hoover, who was an alumnus. On the first floor, there were various items on display commemorating Mr. Hoover's life.

さてエレベーターでタワーに上る。搭上より四界を見渡せば、四界皆大学の構内である。学舎、寄宿舎等肩を並べ、その広大なこと、我が中伊豆町がスッポリ入っても足りないように思う。この広大な校舎にわずか１３、０００人が学ぶという。如何に悠々たる勉強出来る事かと驚きと共に羨ましく思った。すでに夕暮れ近くなったので、史子のアパートに送ってもらう。

We rode an elevator to the top of the tower. From there, we could look out in all four directions, completely surrounded by the campus. Academic buildings, offices, and residence halls stood next to each other, and I imagine that the entire town of Naka-Izu could have fit inside the campus with room to spare. They say there are only 13,000 students on this vast campus. "What a comfortable place to study!" I thought, surprised and a bit envious. It was getting dark, so we returned to Ayako's home.
