88歳おじいちゃんの渡米記🇺🇸第二日目①「ベイブリッジ越え、急坂の街へ」

米寿渡米記 - 第二日目（１９９５年２月２０日）

アメリカでの一夜は明けた。８時半目を覚ます。２０日である。今日もミスターマイクが車で迎えに来てくれる。今日はいよいよサンフランシスコの観光である。パロアルトを発ち、平坦を暫く走ると丘稜地帯である。 その高速道路を快走。ゆるやかに上ったり下ったり山脈を後へ送りながら突っ走る。行儀よく並んだ白亜の建物、団地？白一色見るからに目が覚める。暫く走ると下り坂になり眼下にサンフランシスコのビル街が見えて来る。

My first morning in America. I opened my eyes at 8:30. It was the 20th. Mr. Mike was coming again today by car to pick us up. Today, at last, we were going to take a tour of San Francisco. After leaving Palo Alto, we drove through the flat country for a little while until we reached the mountains. It was a smooth ride along the freeway. The car gently climbed and descended the hills and pressed on, leaving the high country behind us. Neat rows of whitewashed houses and apartments shone brightly in my eyes. After some time, the road descended and we could see below us the streets of San Francisco.

このサンフランシスコ＝オークランドのベイブリッジは１９３６年建造である。長さ８.４マイル（１３.５km）上下二層五車線にて一日の交通量は260,000台を超えるという。世界一といっても過言ではない。アメリカの威信をかけて費用も莫大だった。当時で２０００万ドル。今日の貨幣価値にすれば優に２００億ドルを超えるのである。

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was completed in 1936. It is 8.4 miles (13.5 km) long, and in one day, more than 260,000 vehicles pass over its two five-lane levels, they say. No doubt, it is the busiest bridge in the world. It added to the prestige of the United States, costing twenty million dollars, a vast and fabulous sum at the time. In today's money, that would be worth more than twenty billion dollars.

トレジャー･アイランドに少し寄ってからコイトタワーに向かう。このタワーは、サンフランシスコを見下ろす高い遠望所であり四囲の眺めは素晴しい。我等はここでやたらにカメラのシャッターを切る。暫時目を楽しませて市内へと車を進める。

After stopping briefly at Treasure Island, we headed for Coit Tower. From there, we could look out on San Francisco, and the views were magnificent in every direction. We took a great many pictures. We enjoyed the view from the tower for a while, then drove into the city.

サンフランシスコは坂の町である。いや坂に建てられた町といったほうが適当かも知れない。特にランバードの坂道は昔の人の難所だったらしいが、今はその急坂に九十九折の道路を造り左右を花いっぱいの観光道路として有名である。我等も記念にドライブする。車は右に曲がり左に折れて坂の町を眺めつつ下ると、サンフランシスコの名所フィッシャーマンズワーフに到着する。

San Francisco is a city of hills. Or perhaps I should say it is a city built among hills. Lombard Street especially seems to have been difficult to pass through for the people of yesteryear, but a road of myriad turns was constructed on that steep hill, and now it is famous among tourists and full of flowers. We too rode down Lombard, and could see the city of hills below us as we descended the street, turning left here, right there, until we arrived at one of the best-known places in San Francisco, Fisherman's Wharf.
