88歳おじいちゃんの渡米記🇺🇸第四日目「煙のないショッピングセンター散歩」

米寿渡米記 - 第四日目（１９９５年２月２２日）

翌２２日は８時半にベッドを離れる。東京から青戸の阿瀬君（史子の従弟）が来て合流。 今日はバスに乗って、スタンフォード･ショッピングセンターへ。小じんまりした静かなショッピング街である。買い物客も日本の様にごった返してはいない。隣り合せたデパートも大きいので客もまばらに見える。ここでアイスクリームで喉をうるおす。アメリカは何処へ行っても喫煙所が無い。食堂や喫茶店でも灰皿は出ない。従って煙草をふかしている人は見かけないし、煙草の自販器も見かけた事は無い。

Got out of bed the next day at 8:30. Mr. Ase of Aoto, Ayako's cousin from Tokyo, met up with us. We took a bus to the Stanford Shopping Center. It is a quaint and quiet mall, not crowded with shoppers like in Japan. The department stores, built right next to one another, were so large that we did not see many customers. Here we quenched our thirst with ice cream. Wherever you go in America, there is no place to smoke. In the cafes and restaurants, they don't put out ashtrays. So I didn't see anyone smoking, nor any cigarette machines.
