【英訳】侏儒の言葉35：S・Mの知恵
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

The Wisdom of My Friend S. M.
The following are the words that my friend S. M. spoke to me.
Achievement of dialectic: To have had us reach the conclusion that everything is ridiculous at all.
Girls: The ever-lasting crystal-clear shallows.
Early-education: Hm, that’s not bad. For we’re not responsible if they have known how sad it is to know something when they are still in kindergarten.
Reminiscence: A landscape painting whose horizon is far away. The finishing touch has been added already.
Women: According to Ms Marie Stopes, women are created so faithful to their husband that they feel desire for him at least once every two weeks.
Youth: The depression that people feel in their youth is haughtiness to the whole universe.
Adversity is the parent of virtue: If it were adversity that is the parent of virtue, then those guys who are thoughtful about their daily lives should never be virtuous after all.
How we ought to live: we should keep something unknown left for us.
S・Mの知恵
これは友人S・Mのわたしに話した言葉である。
弁証法の功績。 ― 所詮何ものもばかげているという結論に到達せしめたこと。
少女 ― どこまで行っても清冽な浅瀬。
早教育 ― ふむ、それも結構だ。まだ幼稚園にいるうちに知恵の悲しみを知ることには責任を持つことにも当たらないからね。
追憶。 ― 地平線の遠い風景画。ちゃんと仕上げもかかっている。
女。 ― メリイ・ストオプス夫人によれば女は少なくとも二週間に一度、夫に欲情を感ずるほど貞節にできているものらしい。
年少時代。 ― 年少時代の憂鬱は全宇宙に対する驕慢である。
艱難汝を玉にす。 ― 艱難汝を玉にするとすれば、日常生活に、思慮深い男は到底玉になれないはずである。
われらいかに生くべきか。 ― 未知の世界を少し残して置くこと。
