【英訳】侏儒の言葉36：社交
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Sociability
Any form of sociability naturally needs some lying. Were we to tell our friends and acquaintances what we really think of them without any lying at all, even the friendship between Guan and Bao seen in a story from Chinese antiquity would have broken up for sure. Putting aside the relationship between Guan and Bao, more or less, we do hate or disdain our close friends and acquaintances. However, hatred, when faced with interest, must sheathe its sword. And our disdain, in many cases, makes us tell more and more lies calmly. This is why we have to be perfectly armed with a sense of interest and disdain towards each other, in order to build closest relationships with our friends and acquaintances. This is, of course, an extremely difficult condition for anyone. Otherwise, we would have been gentlemen of flawless manners already, and the world would have seen a pacific golden age a long time before.

あらゆる社交はおのずから虚偽を必要とするものである。もし寸毫の虚偽をも加えず、われわれの友人知己に対するわれわれの本心を吐露するとすれば、古えの管鮑の交わりといえども破綻を生ぜずにはいなかったであろう。管鮑の交わりはしばらく問わず、われわれは皆多少にもせよ、われわれの親密なる友人知己を憎悪しあるいは軽蔑している。が、憎悪も利害の前には鋭鋒を収めるのに相違ない。かつまた軽蔑は多々ますます恬然と虚偽を吐かせるものである。このゆえに、われわれの友人知己と最も親密に交わるためには、互いに利害と軽蔑とを最も完全にそなえなければならぬ。これはもちろんなんぴとにもはなはだ困難なる条件である。さもなければわれわれはとうの昔に礼譲に富んだ紳士になり、世界もまたとうの昔に黄金時代の平和を現出したであろう。
