【英訳】侏儒の言葉37：瑣事
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Trivial Things
If you are to make your life happy, you must love trivial things in your daily life: Sunlights from behind clouds, rustling bamboos, chirps from flocking sparrows, faces of passers-by ― you must enjoy supreme sweetness in everyday trivialities.
To make your life happy? ― Someone who loves trivial matters, though, must suffer from them. The frog that jumped into the old pond in front of the garden should have broken 100 years of grief, but a frog that jumped out of it might have given 100 years of grief. Well, Basho’s life was a life of joy, while it was, to everyone’s eye, a life of passion. If we are to enjoy subtlety, we must also suffer from it.
If you are to make your life happy, you must suffer from everyday trivialities: Sunlights from behind clouds, rustling bamboos, chirps from flocking sparrows, faces of passers-by ― you must find agony of damnation in everything trivial from your daily life.
瑣事
生を幸福にするためには、日常の瑣事を愛さなければならぬ。雲の光、竹のそよぎ、群雀の声、行人の顔、― あらゆる日常の瑣事のうちに無上の甘露味を感じなければならぬ。
人生を幸福にするためには？― しかし瑣事を愛するものは瑣事のために苦しまなければならぬ。庭前の古池に飛び込んだ蛙は百年の愁を破ったであろう。が、古池を飛び出した蛙は百年の愁を与えたかもしれない。いや、芭蕉の一生は享楽の一生であると共に、たれの目にも受苦の一生である。われわれも微妙に楽しむためには、やはりまた微妙に苦しまなければならない。
人生を幸福にするためには、日常の瑣事に苦しまなければならぬ。雲の光、竹のそよぎ、群雀の声、行人の顔、― あらゆる日常の瑣事のうちに堕地獄の苦痛を感じなければならぬ。
