【英訳】侏儒の言葉39：民衆
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Folks
Folks are moderate conservatives. Systems, thoughts, works of fine art, religions ― anything whatsoever has to be in the colour of the previous age if it is to be loved by them. So, it is not necessarily their fault alone that so-called folk artists are not loved by the folks.
Or,
It is not something to be proud of to find the folks to be idiots, but it is, anyway, to find ourselves to be part of the folks.
Or
The ancients counted making the folks stupid as a major way of government, just as if they could make them even more stupid ― or, as though they could, in some way, make them intelligent.
民衆
民衆は穏健なる保守主義者である。制度、思想、芸術、宗教、― 何ものも民衆に愛されるためには、前時代の古色を帯びなければならぬ。いわゆる民衆芸術家の民衆のために愛されないのは必ずしも彼らの罪ばかりではない。
又
民衆の愚を発見するのは必ずしも誇るに足ることではない。が、われわれ自身もまた民衆であることを発見するのはともかくも誇るに足ることである。
又
古人は民衆を愚にすることを治国の大道に数えていた。ちょうどまだこの上にも愚にすることのできるように。― あるいはまたどうかすれば賢にでもすることのできるように。
