【英訳】侏儒の言葉40：チエホフの言葉
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Chekhov’s Words
Chekhov discussed differences between males and females in his manuscript ― “As women grow older, they focus ever more on being women; whereas men, as they age, distance themselves ever more from women.”
These words of Chekhov’s, though, are no different from saying that men and women are, by nature, indifferent to each other. We must say this is what even three-year-old children are readily aware of. Besides, these words show the indifference of both sexes to each other rather than the difference lying between them.
チエホフの言葉
チエホフはその手記の中に男女の差別を論じている。 ― 「女は年をとるとともに、ますます女の事に従うものであり、男は年をとるとともに、ますます女の事から離れるものである。」
しかしこのチエホフの言葉は男女ともに年をとるとともに、おのずから異性との交渉に立ち入らないというのも同じことである。これは三歳の童児といえどもとうに知っていることと言わなければならぬ。のみならず男女の差別よりもむしろ男女の無差別を示しているものと言わなければならぬ。
