【英訳】侏儒の言葉42：処女崇拝
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Cult of Virginity
How many times have we repeated ridiculous mistakes in choosing our wives, all for the sake of marrying virgins? ― It is about time we turned our back on the cult of virginity.
Or,
The cult of virginity begins when we know what virginity means. That is to say, it values minute pieces of knowledge rather than honest feelings. Therefore, the admiration of virginity should be called pedantry in love affairs. Maybe it is not a coincidence that every virginity worshipper behaves, in some ways, solemnly.
Or,
Of course, the cult of apparent virginity is something different from the cult of virginity. Those who take these words for synonyms perhaps too much underestimate women’s talents for acting.
処女崇拝
われわれは処女を妻とするためにどのくらい妻の選択に滑稽なる失敗を重ねて来たか、もうそろそろ処女崇拝に背中を向けてもいい時分である。

処女崇拝は処女たる事実を知った後に始まるものである。すなわち率直なる感情よりも零細なる知識を重んずるものである。このゆえに処女崇拝は恋愛上の衒学者と言わなければならぬ。あらゆる処女崇拝者の何か厳然と構えているのもあるいは偶然ではないかもしれない。
又
もちろん処女らしさ崇拝は処女崇拝以外のものである。この二つを同義語とするものはおそらく女人の俳優的才能をあまりに軽々に見ているものであろう。
