So I just watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I can safely say that it is one of the most perfect films I've ever seen, if not the best. The casting was just perfect, the acting was incredible, everything clicked wonderfully. Still, as perfect as the movie is, I feel the book is way, way ahead of it.

Some of the deviations from the novel were a bit disappointing, such as not having Scanlon encourage Chief to escape, and not having Doc Spivey go on the fishing trip. Others though, like not having Cheswick die, I could somewhat understand. And yes, the book has the advantage of being narrated by Chief Bromden, but I'm not even sure if that would have really worked out in movie form.

Watching the movie just confirms even deeper my love for the book. Sadly, in my endeavors to share my discovery with others, I've lent the book to a friend who doesn't seem to appreciate it. It's been several weeks now and, much to my dismay, he has shown little to no interest in reading it. He says he's on page 14. He says he just doesn't feel like reading right now, but I just think he doesn't like the book. I also let him borrow A Clockwork Orange and he devoured that in like a week. He even said that if I wanted it back at any time just to ask, so I think that's a pretty obvious way to let someone know that you're not enjoying something that they've lent you and that you'd like them to take it back. Ah well.

What really gets me though is I let him borrow On the Road, which he similarly disliked, and he at least made it to page 74 with that one. It doesn't look like he's even going to get that far with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Sad, sad, sad.

Sorry for the disconnected ramblings, but those were my thoughts on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as of right now.

Anyways, just to reiterate the deepest concerns of another community member, just where the hell are those One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest icons? Surely somebody would have made some by now.

Hey all!
I've been a fan of Cuckoo's Nest [the book] for 15 years and Cuckoo's Nest [the movie] for about a month now.
I first read the book when I was 11. Though a lot of it went over my head at the time, I was fascinated by it and re-read it quite a few times until the book mysteriously vanished from our house. Eventually I forgot about it, but recently my Brad Dourif affliction obsession flared to life and I snagged the DVD on eBay. Watching it triggered my memories of how much I'd loved the book, so I bought a copy of it on eBay as well. It arrived yesterday and I read it immediately. If possible, it's even better than I remember (probably because I actually understand it now).

Favorite book moments:
Harding and McMurphy try to "outcrazy" each other.
The monopoly game in the tub room.
The Chief "goes into" a painting -- the ultimate form of escapism!
The voluntary patients leave the ward in droves as the Nurse's power crumbles.
Scanlon provides the Chief with the impetus to make his escape.

Favorite movie moments:
[anything with Billy Bibbit]
"I'm tired and it's a lot of baloney!"
McMurphy rides Bancini around the basketball court.
The colonel sings the national anthem.
The Chief speaks!
Taber hides Harding's cigarette in his pants cuff at Group Meeting.

Favorite book character:
The Chief

Favorite movie character:
B-b-b-billy (aww)

Favorite minor character:
The Colonel -- he just cracks me up, both in book and movie. I think he'd be better off in an old folks' home than in a mental institution.

Comparison of book to movie:
I know people always say "Oh, the book was so much better, but in this case I don't agree. In fact, it's not really an issue. I think both are prime examples of their particular media -- the book is a great book, the movie is a great movie.
Sure, there's a lot more detail in the book, but that's par for the course. The fact that the movie can stand independent of the book is a testament to its power.
(And I haven't seen the theater production, so I can't comment on that)

I also posted a brief review of the book in the_bookbog; this is the most important part of what I said there: It's an excellent study of character and a powerful combination of drama and humor, hope and despair. In reading this book, you can really *feel* what it is to be mentally ill, shunted away from society and trapped in a ward, subject to the whims and tyranny of the nurses and orderlies.

Wow. I never thought I'd fine a community for Cuckoo's Nest, and I'm so glad that I have! My name's Fran and I'm 17 :) As do you guys, I love the movie of Cuckoo's Nest (though not as much as the book, but that's the same with everything ^^), and I recently went to London to see the West End production starring Christian Slater as McMurphy and (my favourite actor) Mackenzie Crook as Billy Bibbit. My favourite character has always been Billy; I can really identify with him and his severe lack of confidence due to the shared speech impediment, and when I read the books I never thought I would see a performance to justify him. Well, I didn't think any performance could justify any of the characters, but I have since been proved wrong twice.

Anyway, it's nice to be here, and it's also lovely to be in a community which won't be populated by short-cut typers :)

I love jack and the movie OFOTCN. It's so cool and it was the perfect role for jack. the book was good too. I even saw the play version of the book. it was quite interesting to say the least. but the cool part was that the actor who played McMurphy looked almost like Jack.

im soooo glad there is a community for 'cuckoo's nest' it's my all time favorite movie! my favorite character was billy bibbit because he was pretty cute *sighs* those eyes ok back to reality
all seriousness though i read the book and thought it was fanatastic.

Right, here's a good question for you all to ponder over. If you were to remake Cuckoo's Nest right now, who would you get to play McMurphy?
