I was able to watch this live today between my lunchtime and then flexing another hour in my workday :D
- I have made the note 'evil editing palooza' - this was where the gloves came off in terms of having lots of trainees come off looking less positive. The 'displacing lower ranked people from their chosen part' thing was clearly set up to create this kind of drama. But it was shown in different ways for different contestants - for example, having the displaced trainee cut in as a talking head to say how much they wanted the part, or not. - Having just marathoned 4 episodes of 'Peak Time' because I cannot get enough K-survival, I was amused that this has landed on the same basic 'mission' at the same time - let's all cross over, team up and do showdowns! - I would love to see the budget line for this show on 'colour coded jackets to classify all the trainees, stickers ditto'. The Top 9 jackets looked annoyingly hot. - Performances! I need to rewatch. Again, with Peak Time, 'Love Killa' getting a moment with me (I'd not heard it before this week!) Hmmm, on balance I think 11am aka Vanner being sexy Kingsmen was, in fact, sexier than this slightly more in-your-face version although nice work Seok Matthew. - Keita keeps on impressing me. He has that performance vibe of someone who is so glad to be performing, so glad that you are there to watch them, totally relaxed and confident and then you, the viewer, get joy and energy from that and it's all a beautiful cycle. Of course I'm sure it's 'serene on top, feet paddling madly underneath' half the time, but giving that appearance of effortlessness is a real skill - I missed a chunk of the pre-Tomboy VCR - what was the narrative? I see they've left us hanging on seeing the performance and heavily teased some dreadful strife for Local Elf and Chosen Son, Sung Hanbin :( - Song selection time! - I still don't get how the points will/do work in relation to people winning judge votes, live audience votes or app votes but I think it's best to surrender to the process. At least I can vote for this show whereas the Peak Time webpage totally stumped me.
I did not love the unseating boys bit. Seeing everyone bicker over the same two songs, Love Killa and Tomboy just aggravated me. Like, move on boys! I loved seeing Woongi go to Feel Special and I am excited to see that performance. I think we deserve a fun and special boys covering girl groups performance! I am also looking forward to Tomboy, their styling looks amazing there.
This was my Not Loving Matthew hours...I think he wanted to show a different side of himself and he just irritated me a bit, but also most of his interactions were with Jiwoong, who I have a completely irrational dislike of. He rubs me the wrong way, and he's one of two candidates that I just struggle to believe is a decent person, given no actual evidence (the other being Jay.) so that might have contributed. I think they would have overall been stronger had Jiwoong lead and Matthew done the killing part, but whatever. I have no real issues, I was just Not Loving It.
Meanwhile, ZOOM! OMG they were so good. Haruto in particular really got a chance to shine here!
Yes 2 hours is the most an episode of TV should ever be, really.
Oh Woongi. Yas Queen :D I have started putting him in some of my 6picks, I think a band needs someone with capital p Personality.
Yes the intersections with Peak Time and the respective strengths and weaknesses of the two shows is quite funny. PROPER GIRL GROUP COVERS PLEASE.
Jiwoong is interesting - I felt a sympathy for him because a google told me that he'd previously debuted and his group had ended up suing their company for being awful to him, plus I guess a sense that I wanted to support the idea that being LGBT-associated is not unthinkable (although I have no idea if he is actually queer or even supportive of queer issues). But I have nothing to base that on! And I do feel like the edit he's had suggests Mnet are not interested in viewers feeling any kind of emotional connection to him (although that's also been true of some of the other very popular ones). With Matthew I thought they were setting up Jiwoong to look like a trial to Matthew (a bit like what played out with Krystian and Kamden) but it all got a bit more complicated than that...
What I wouldn't give to sit in on a Super Secret Mnet Steering meeting where they plan this stuff...
Zoom was fab. I'm learning so many new songs from both this and Peak Time :D (My other fav for this week past was Beautiful, Beautiful by ONF)
Beautiful Beautiful was Hanbin's ranking song on BP! It put him on my radar bc it is a good song very beloved by the queer community in SK! I saw it because it was put on a list of something like Songs For Pride that the Seoul...IDK a local queer group had assembled.
I am worried Woongi doesn't actually want to debut/WakeOne does not intend to debut him. He was in To1(formerly TOO) and left/was removed under weird circumstances (fans calling him gay online in rude rude ways + mental health hiatus.) Unclear if he quit or if he was removed but he's still under the label. I don't really know what is/was going on there, I haven't done much more than a skim.
This is my absolutely deranged take: Jiwoong comes across Very Straight to me! Of course I know nothing, can tell absolutely nothing, everything is edited and I know no one but despite his BL history...I do not know!
Ooooh interesting about the queer culture link for Beautiful Beautiful - that makes sense! I kind of want to rewatch all the ranking performances now I know who people are a bit more - if only I had the time!
Well I hope Woongi's OK and is getting to do what he wants/what's best for him, and gets to be somewhere that will celebrate what he does <3
I suppose we've had a minimal amount about any of these trainee's actual lives. Which is normal up to a point, but compared to other shows I feel I have even less sense that usual of what they would go home to.
