Are mods really broken with this last update?
Real question, I'm reinstalling the game again (unfortunately just as they released a new update) and I was wondering if I should actually downgrade the game or if it only break like a couple random mods?

Last time I played was after the next gen update and I didn't downgrade yet the mods were fine (I was playing a modpack with Horizon) so I wonder if everyone isn't just jumping on the bethesda hate train (understandable to a degree) and everything's actually fine?

Most mods work just fine. Others need to be updated.
(Same as it always is after any game update.)
Do any of your mods use F4SE? If not, you should be good to go. If so, you'll need to update F4SE and (maybe) the mods themselves. Not all F4SE mods need updating, but F4SE breaks itself intentionally and requires an update.
Horizon relies on F4SE, Address Library (for Better Console, High FPS Physics Fix, Weapon Debris Crash Fix, HUDFramework, and probably more...)

F4SE is officially updated, AL is quasi-officially updated - meaning Anton, the creator of High FPS and Weapon Debris took it upon himself (since AL is GPL code on github) to fix it and compile it for you... though expect a "proper" one to come from Ryan when he has time... this is just a stop-gap thing since Anton is cool like that. (it's hosted under High FPS Physics Fix in the Optional Files section)

so yes, if you update, you will be broken til you update both F4SE and AL, then things should be back to normal... hopefully. :-) I don't know if there's any .dll mods in Horizon that do not use Address Library, and those have to be manually updated by each creator, if so.

so, unless you are comfortable downgrading, just go offline before launching, if you wanna wait, or back up everything to another directory, and just go for it, and if it fails? restore the backup on top of it.

You misunderstood, I'm doing a fresh install with a brand new modlist, so I'm not playing with horizon again, that was just to say that this huge overhaul mod worked perfectly fine back then at the peak of "broken mods" but I wanted to know it it did actually break a bunch of mods this time.
It appears to no be the case and I haven't seen the usual "please update the mod" on any of the mods I've installed yet.

also wdym "play offline"? as long as the game isn't set to auto update, launching it through f4se shouldn't trigger the update, no?
correct. but if you're rebuilding from scratch? I'd just go for it.

no one wants to support anything but the current, for obvious reasons of maintaining 16 different variants for 100 people total. so since F4SE and AL are good to go? that's 98% of every .dll mod you'll consider using, and probably 100% that have been updated since the whole NG/AE thing started... you're at as good a time as any to start!

course Bethesda has this nasty habit of finding bad bugs right after an update and a few days/weeks later, roll out a patch to the update... so... yeah, it's a coin toss.

and yes I did misunderstand, re-reading it it says exactly what you meant, it was my fault there. apologies. :-)
If you're making a new mod list, then pay close attention to both the last release date of the mods, and the bug reports of those mods. Pretty much normal operating procedure for making a new list! Took me 2+ days to get mine all in order though I'm not updating yet because I'm neck-deep in my current run and don't really want to give up on it if something I use IS among the list of stuff needing manual attention.

you should be good to go if you just pay attention to WHICH mods need what, like all new mod lists.

hey hey now, do not teach your grandpa ways to the youngins. the DATE a mod came out has absolutely *zero* to do with it's functionality. a solid mod is a solid mod, a janky mod, still janky... the only time date comes into play is like items and level lists, because something say pre- grenade launchers and when-pigs-fly piggy launchin' fat mans, well, how can it possibly help with stuff that came out after it was made it doesn't know about?

edit: and of course prerequisite mods that aren't updated, or were janky in the first place. try to avoid prerequisite mods in general, unless you know the whole "set" is known working, actually.

reading the posts section is a damn good suggestion, though, you'll see what you're in for; some mods are worth it, like Manufacturing Extended, from the wee early days, a decade old and still loved, but it's a bit cantankerous to say the least, same for say Thuggysmurf's mods and his love of loose files by the thousands... they can get along fine in your modern setup, just, hmm, takes some skill, some luck, and perhaps a sacrificial lamb to the Daedric Prince of your choosing. LOOT? nah, leave LOOT out of this, it probably will make it worse than better.

he actually sounds like he knows what he's doin, so no notes, go nuts man. :-)
No no I mean the date of its LAST update. I still use mods from 2016, along side mods that just came out, or ones which were released in like 2020 and then updated recently. Sorry for a confuse.
