Stuff

I'm currently playing phone tag with a supervisor at Comcast. Haven't spoken to anyone yet, but the message had a clue that they really liked my resumé.

Even though I grew up in Wisconsin and Illinois, I haven't lived there for 32 years, and I haven't re-adjusted to cold weather here yet. Portland is not as cold as Wisconsin (my Dad told me a couple days ago that they have an inch of snow there already; it's too warm for snow here still.) And I never liked the heat in Sacramento. But I adjusted to it enough that 55 degrees feels really cold.

I'm trying to use my big coat less, though, and stick to pullovers and jackets for a while.

I've been playing Dungeon Keeper 2 lately (got to stop crashing this time!) So, of course, I have "Disco Inferno" in my head. Burn the mutha down!

The Dark Times

I plan on packing my computer this evening, so I will be offline at least a week, maybe more. It's possible I'll visit a library and use a computer there, but I'm going to be awfully busy this next week. Even if I do make a library trip, it will be to check for critical email.

See you folks on the Other Side.

Garage

Out behind my current house, there's a garage that the owner tried to convert into living units, before the city stopped him. For about two months, there's been no work on it at all, although the city did say something like "convert it back, you bastard."

Today, there were workmen out there, converting it back. They'd already removed the ordinary entry door they'd put in and put an ordinary garage-sized doorway back, although they hadn't put an actual garage door into the frame. I heard them complaining, "The Man won't let us do anything else."

Stupid city government, preventing people from creating unsafe structures! Who will protect slumlords from rampant government interference?

Rent

I know I said I'd write up the story of the rental fiascoes I've had over the last two months, and everyone's anxious to read the tale, but I haven't had time to write it yet. It may be kind of long. However, I've been informed of something today that gives a little taste of some of what's been going on. The landlord has been demanding direct cash deposits into a bank account, no checks (which may or may not be legal.) However, he's decided he doesn't trust this (although no one's missed a payment that I know of.)

What he plans to do to fix this is demand that rent be taken directly out of our paychecks.

I'm not certain, but I think this is illegal. It's definitely not in the current lease, which is probably why he wants to rewrite the lease.

Internet!

I have internet again, finally. It was scheduled for the 28th of last month, but that, of course, means nothing. They brought the cable modem today.

Of course, I may have to MOVE SOON, but that's another big long stupid story, linked to a lot of stupid stuff that has already gone on. I don't have the energy to type that all up right now, but I'll get to it at some point.

But to summarize: Internet. I has it.
