October 7: still living...
Daily life right now feels like a matter of survival. The heat and humidity are higher than I ever remember, and I'm feeling it more than I ever remember as well. And for some reason, we are having an excess amount of cockroaches these days. Not many of the huge scary ones, but numerous tiny annoying persistent ones. All over the kitchen. It's pretty gross. We put food away, clean the counters, spray... and yet they return. Again and again. Yuck.
So, do I talk about the things that happen in daily life here? It's hard to do it without sounding like I'm whining and complaining. My tendency is to endure it, and say as little as possible about it. Hence, an inactive blog.
Pictures? So much work to pick that camera and find something out there in the heat to capture...
We are looking forward to November, when the cool desert breeze blows down through Senegal!

August 23: catching up...
This bird is from Senegal, a sight seen from my roof on my first day back in Dakar! He was pretty cool! (It's a Senegal parrot.)
I've finally had a little bit of time to edit some of my photos from the trip to Miami/Minnesota/Wisconsin. I didn't get as many great photos as usual, probably because I was too busy having fun with the people there! Here's a link to my August facebook album with the first batch of photos... more are yet to come!

July 1: looking ahead!
Dave, Jacob and I will travel tomorrow night to Miami, Florida and spend about two weeks with Danny, Leah and Leah's family before the July 18 wedding. Joey will be joining us on July 6, from England and N. Ireland. Did I mention we're excited??
Meanwhile, we need to pack (one of my least favorite jobs!) and get our household and pets in good order to be cared for while we are gone!

June 4: GRAD!

A happy and sad night! We are so thankful for the accomplishment of the seniors, but at this ending of the school year, many people will be leaving Senegal and traveling to their home countries. So many that we love-- leave tonight, tomorrow and in the next few days... so our celebration is tinged with sadness!
When we returned to the car at the end of the evening, we found this card for "Aunt Mary", with the beautiful bouquet-- it was an anonymous thank-you note for the time and love I've shared with the students this year... what a surprise and what a treat!

May 30: JSB
My life for these past few days been consumed with helping the juniors prepare for the Junior-Senior Banquet! It went very well and we were very happy with everything... but are very tired now! Here's a link to my photos on facebook if you'd like to look at them...

April 2: soccer a.k.a. football(everywhere in the world except the U.S.!)
A lot of my pictures lately have been taken on the soccer (FOOTBALL) field. There are a lot of students we've gotten to know well this year, and a number of them are soccer players. I've enjoyed watching the games to see how they are doing... and finding myself with some fun pictures as a result!
** note that everywhere in the world except the U.S., soccer is known as football! I'd just gotten used to calling it football while living in Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, and now finding that at Dakar Academy, it's called soccer again! I'm confused. :0

April 21: from Psalm 121
(He is the one who brought Stellan to birth.)
While others slumber, He does not sleep;
He holds us firm, our lives He keeps.
May He keep me firmly from evil today,
May He give peace and trust as for Stellan we pray.
From now and for forevermore,
We ask You, help us trust Your door--
the comings in, the goings out
are in Your plan, we need not doubt.
You shade our days, You guard our nights,
We rest in Your unchanging might.
(thoughts in rhyme this morning as we pray for baby Stellan and his family, for wisdom for the doctors and a successful surgery today in Boston! Psalm 121 )

April 3 : parent and child!
We spent a few days away at a resort with our colleagues for a conference... with time for meetings, as well as time for refreshing, hiking, swimming and wonderful meals! One of my favorite occupations was taking pictures, and I was thrilled to have a photo session happen with a troop of monkeys! They run wild all over the resort, and I happened to find them near me and just hung out with them for an hour! I loved being so close to them, and this was one of my favorite pictures.

March 30: quirky animals
I loved the faces of these quirky animals. Called "ships of the desert", they've been created with so many physical features that allow them to thrive in harsh desert conditions. Once again, I'm blessed by God's amazing attention to details.
March 30: more from the desert
I still can't get over my night in the desert. I wouldn't really have wanted to stay longer than one night, unless I could have somehow gotten out of the sand, had a hot shower, and different food... but I definitely did not get my fill of the unique beauty.
The pictures don't show the cold wind, constantly whipping sand in our faces, in our cameras, etc. Our tracks marred the pristine sand for only moments before the wind blew all traces of us away again.
March 29: unusual house sight!
Tonight on the way to the restaurant where we celebrated our 27th anniversary , we passed this "house." Note that the lion's teeth are the balcony, and there is a man standing there, who doesn't reach the top of the tooth! I left the trees in for perspective-- this is a LARGE house! I can't help but wonder who would think of something like this... and why!

March 29: praying for Stellan

I've been following MckMama's blog for awhile. She is an artist and a mom who takes amazing pictures. Her writing is honest and fun. When I discovered her blog, she was enjoying her four healthy children, sharing photos and life with the many who visited her blog.
Those four healthy children were not taken for granted, especially since the fourth had not been expected to live beyond his birth, as he was diagnosed with a serious heart problem while in the womb. But in God's good plan, Stellan was born healthy, with no sign of heart problems. The pictures of his first few months of life are so precious! (Read Stellan's story here.)
Last week, their life took an unexpected turn when Stellan plunged back into heart problems, and the family plunged back into roller-coaster days in Children's Hospital. They've been in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit since that time.
I've been praying for them, and saw that readers had started a photo gallery, with Stellan's name posted from places all around the world. When we had our desert camping overnight, I tried to come up with a cool picture to encourage this family, just for them to know that someone in Senegal was praying for them. The picture didn't turn out that well, but by God's grace, receiving it was a real encouragement to Stellan's mom.
We continue to look to God for His sustaining and healing work in that precious young baby's heart, and in his whole family as well. I feel thankful to be a part God's family worldwide, and privileged to be a part of His encouragement to a family in a difficult season of life.
It may go without saying, but I hope you will join me in praying for Stellan and his family!

March 26-27 : desert camp!

camp view 7, originally uploaded by MaryD SN-MN.
We had an amazing overnight camping in the desert, riding camels, playing in the dunes... I was thrilled by the beauty all around!
(Finally got the pictures onto Flick'r, so if you'd like to see more, go here!)

March 12: backyard citron

The tree in our back courtyard is beginning to bear fruit. We didn't plant the tree, but have nurtured it along since 2005 when we moved into this house. At first our gardener told us he thought it was an orange tree... but more recently he says "citron" which could be lemon or lime.
The flowers are incredibly fragrant, and we will pick and sample the fruit in the days ahead.
(And at that point we might have a better idea of what it really is.
To me it looks like the lemons sometimes sold in the markets here, yellow fruit but more softball shaped than the lemons we are used to in the States. Limes as we know them in the States are called lemons over here too... maybe the distinction between the two is not really all that important!! )

February 7: city view
From high up on the lighthouse hill, this view of the Grande Mosque near the ocean, with the city in the background is quite impressive. I love the fishing boats lined up on the shore.
February 7: lighthouse with cat
We drove to the lighthouse at the top of the hill, and enjoyed finding cats perched in various places around the beat-up building.
