[backdated post from offline notes]

The good
  • rode to work [3/40]
  • still a tired and cranky mouse, but have survived another year of annual updates.
  • dealt with youngest’s choir stuff, including donating the old trousers, rather than find a new home for them; ordered new trousers and shorts
  • managed a breakthrough on where to source the info youngest needs for the family history project, given that zie decided that my nonna was the person of choice.
The bad
  • house is a disaster and stressing me out.
  • work is stressing me out.
  • not getting any craft done
  • getting further behind on the coursera courses I’m doing, even though I’m Really Interested in theory.
  • one step removed clan member J is failing healthwise, and prognosis is poor.

Today was my first attempt at riding to work with the new regime. Remarkably good going – bit of a head wind in a couple of places, but mostly I was able to stick with the goal of going at least 20 klick with no more than 2/5 power. Spent a couple of sections scooting along at 25 klick – turns out that I can’t accelerate physically, but what I can do is use the throttle to accelerate a bit (say +5 km/h) and then pedal to maintain it. Distance travelled almost exactly 20 km; time taken 57 minutes to the bottom of the ramp; 1:03 to having the bike stored. **

Two main sections where I used the throttle. The first, my hip started complaining, and I had to twist it to get rid of the cramp that was threatening to pull it out of alignment; the second I was just getting tired and took the advantage of having a rest.

Pretty happy with it overall – I’m still just about the slowest person on the path (I passed one cyclist going the same way), but that isn’t the point – I can gain speed once I have the stamina thing sorted out. The intent is to work on consistency for a week or two, and then look at either increasing the ‘typical’ speed (not the average, although my little cat eye contraption will track that as well), but just trying to keep the ‘current’ speed at the given level. If I can get it up to about 25 klick, I’ll start spending time with the power at 1/5. Given the weight of the bike, I’m probably not going to end up cycling without the power, but minimising it at least.

And the other thing I’m working on to start with is spin – I’m really struggling with it. I can get it working for a while, and then the front of my thighs start complaining (and my hip gets cranky). I’m better off with the extra power and the slower pedal speed at present – I’ll look at getting up to a more appropriate speed later (I’ve always been a power rather than a speed cyclist – I grew up in hills, and learnt how to really throw my weight into moving the pedals slowly but surely, and I’ve never really learnt the tricks of cycling on the flat).

* I’ve picked 40 as a (hopefully low) goal for the year – this is equivalent to once per school week. Given that the only extra-curricular on Wednesdays is youngest’s choir, and that is late, I’m planning on riding Wednesday, regardless of the weather (I’ll need a raincover for one of the bags, so that I can take a dry set of clothes, or keep dry ones at work). So, in theory, this should be easy to achieve. I’m also hoping that once a week when chaosmanor is being parent-in-charge, I can ride then as well. Will negotiate with youngest about how zie feels about me leaving before zie does – eldest will still be there. But if I leave at 8am, having washed, then I should be at my desk at 9am, so as long as I only take a half hour lunch break (which I have to work out how to do that again – I was really good at it until I made the rule that I don’t eat lunch at my desk), which means I’ll get a full work day if I work until 5pm…

** At the moment, I’m using the lab group store room (which I shared with another bike today), but as soon as I remember to get in touch with campus security, I can put in a request to have access to the bike store room in the next building added to my campus card. Then I just park the bike and head up to my office, rather than the current faffing about with lifts and walking halfway round the atrium.

Cycling

One of the things I wanted to do on my holidays was get back in to cycling. In 2007, just before the dreaded lurgy and lingering post-viral complications, I had started riding to work - about 17km each way. I was still in the getting used to it phase, but I had big hopes to do with upping frequency, and getting faster, and not getting hassled by the pillocks-in-lycra for not knowing obscure etiquette rules to do with how much footpath a slow-poke was allowed.

I have now ridden an appreciable distance either eight out of the last nine mornings, or seven of the last eight (I can't tell if one set of memories are one morning or two). Initially I was riding up to Mount Henry Bridge, doing a quick circuit on the outdoor gym equipment, and riding home. I'm not keeping much track of what I'm doing on the equipment other than vaguely trying to not do less on anything than I did before (other than the parallel bars, which I've dropped entirely from the list). Three days ago, I decided to go just a little further. And then a little further. And then Canning Bridge was in sight, so I headed up there, crossed the river, and came back along the other side of the river. This was then associated with a struggle getting home. Which wouldn't have been that bad, but it was also (possibly? This is where the overlapping memory problem happens) the first day of swimming lessons (which makes it eight out of nine), such that I spent a lot of time walking on very dry sand, and thus muscles were cranky. Ever since, my lower back has a tendency to go in to spasm for the first few moments after standing up.

Each day since, I've done the same ride - I think it is less fatiguing, and I'm starting to improve on times. This morning, the trip back from Mount Henry Bridge was under 20mins (although barely, at 19 mins) for the first time, and the whole trip, from heading out the drive to just before opening the garage door to put the bike away was a smidge over 1 hour - not bad for what Google maps tells me is a total distance of a little over 17km, given my current level of fitness, and taking a break in the middle. Especially as it would appear to be a mere 1km shorter than the distance for riding to work. Which means I am now confident about riding to work on Monday. Bit worried about the ride home, but there is always the bus.

And the really good news - cycling drops my pain levels to nearly negligible, other than muscle fatigue, which I don't really register as pain. The one day I skipped was horrid. And this morning, when I felt horrid, I got on the bike anyway, and felt reasonable within two kms.

Today is the third in a row that I've cycled up to Mount Henry Bridge, done a tiny circuit on the open air equipment, and ridden home again. As day 1 I rode behind youngest pretty much all the way, and thus it felt easy and untiring, and yesterday I overdid things on the way home, made my lungs close up and my legs revolt, such that I had to walk up one of the slopes (they are not hills, but sometimes they feel like it), I figure that the times are a bit inaccurate, and won't be paying attention.

And because I'm thinking of going a little further each day (today I did a bog lap of the bridge itself - for those not familiar, it is a two level bridge, with the lower level only being pedestrian/bike paths, one either side of the central concrete 'lump', connected by tunnels at each end), I don't want to track the whole time, or the going there time, because it is going to fluctuate erratically. So instead, I'm going to keep track of the coming home, from just before I get on the bike, to when my feet are on the driveway and the only bit of my on the bike is my hands. Today I managed 21 minutes, which according to google maps (when I could force it to see things my way) is 5.4 km. Respectable, if nothing flash.

As to today's daily plan? 'Tis Saturday, so it is housework day. But as we have a social gathering in the Hills at 1pm, and I'm hoping to do at least one errand on the way, I'm thinking aiming to get 1 hour of housework is at least optimistic and at best do-able. And this might mean that the 'clean bedroom and lounge room' might get ticked off as well (I did a chunk of shopping yesterday, plus some pottering around, and have nearly finished the crochet blanket while waiting for the movie session, which was significantly later than we had been told)

  •  W - home sick. Cancelled on NICU study meeting and stats talk. Slept for more hours than I would have expected, achieved almost nothing.
  • Th - well enough for work. meeting for NICU study was today, so didn't miss it. [personal profile] grouchiegrrl  collected middlest and youngest from school and ferried them to gym, were I collected her and we went to one of the Indian supermarkets on High road, and bought a heap of stuff.
  • F - health not great again. Tidied/cleaned/cooked for people to come over and for Saturday, plus rested a lot. Made a vegan/gf banana and coconut cake. mmmmm.
  • F - [personal profile] ariaflame  and lizzybbb were only ones who turned up for must see movies. Kids watched flushed away, L recounted exploits from European trip, a game of Ticket to Ride Europe was played, and I didn't really deserve to win
  • Sat - more cooking and cleaning (halva shortbread, molasses bikkies, something I've forgotten). Cook for  A Cure afternoon tea went well - more food than visitors. Tikiwanderer and family showed (yay!). People left later than planned, so we failed to go to bugsjenny and H's combined 40th :-(.
  • Sat - middlest sat GATE testing for high school entrance. zie is hoping to get in to Perth Modern - I think that would be neat, but exhausting. However, ballet classes *on site*, and other such wonders.
  • Sun - youngest had first tiv matinee. I spent the morning on the couch doing paperwork (and beta/proof-reading for verity). Then middlest and I rode up along the freeway. I had forgotten how lovely it is to ride along Mount Henry Bridge (see here for pretty pics), although middlest insisted on carrying on about the *cars right over our heads*. Show was probably better than cabaret night, despite missing T to illness, and S the acrobat for the first half due to tap exam. Spent evening socialising with youngest until voice gave out (yes, I appear to be having symptoms in serial, rather than parallel, including the day of 'no, actually, I have no symptoms' on which I toured a medical facility *facepalm*)
And then there is the health bit. Interesting conversation with workmate D about the fructose intolerance (FODMAPS) diet that is currently trendy. She was talking about the various fruit that cause problems, with particular emphasis on orange juice. And then I bought orange juice for afternoon tea, because the science cafe no longer seems to sell gf food (grumble). And ~30 hours later, in the middle of the coldest may night just about on record, I had acute intestinal pains, and was up and down like yoyo. I will have to repeat this experiment. But I don't want to be that sick in the middle of the night again - will have to do it for breakfast on a Saturday of a quiet weekend.

And now I want to hold on to current level of health or better, and start riding every weekend. If only middlest can be persuaded to ride faster! Tis nearly flat all the way, and I kept putting my brakes on to not run zer over!
