Summary

  • A background delegation card ("Delegated to agent_memory · async", "Delegated to Help · async") now stops spinning when its sub-agent is cancelled. Before, Cancel stopped the sub-agent in the core, but the card kept spinning and the saved subagent:* row stayed running.
  • A late Cancel on a sub-agent that had already finished no longer rewrites its completed session as "cancelled by user", and no longer queues a false "you cancelled" notice into the chat.
  • The card now uses the answer subagent_cancel returns (cancelled: true|false) and settles on it. Before, it ignored that answer, so every later click did nothing.

Problem

Observed on a v0.64 dev build, in two threads. Both cards kept spinning with a Cancel button that did nothing, although the core had already finished both sub-agents:

  • Memory agent (sub-8a9bd4d9) completed at 20:30:31 (6 of 6 iterations), and its result was posted into the chat. The card kept spinning. The first Cancel, at 20:36:56, changed the completed session to failed: "cancelled by user". The next 16 clicks each returned ok and did nothing.
  • Help agent (sub-7b4fa02a) was cancelled 13 s after it started. The core marked it failed: cancelled by user, but its saved turn-state row stayed running, so the card spins after every reload.

Causes:

  1. A card settles only when the sub-agent sends SubagentCompleted or SubagentFailed on the parent's progress channel. Cancel, Stop and thread delete all go through DetachedTaskRegistry::take_and_cancel, which calls cancellation.cancel() and then abort.abort() (tinyagents orchestration/runtime.rs). The tokio future is dropped at its current .await and never reaches its own Cancelled branch, so nothing is sent. handle_subagent_cancel sends nothing to the UI either.
  2. A completed or failed run stays in the registry until sweep_terminal. cancel_by_task therefore still found it, and the RPC recorded a cancellation over a finished run.
  3. CancelTaskAction checked only for an RPC error. It never read cancelled and never updated the card.

Solution

  • AbortReport (agent/orchestration/tools/subagent_abort_report.rs): a drop guard armed around the background run and disarmed once the run returns, since every branch after that reports its own outcome. If the task is dropped while the guard is armed, Drop calls try_send with SubagentFailed on the progress channel the task already holds. The existing pipeline then handles it the same way as a normal failure:

    • the bridge emits subagent_failed
    • the turn-state mirror settles the saved row
    • the run ledger records the end

try_send is used because Drop cannot await. A full or closed channel only loses the UI update, which is the current behaviour anyway.

  • cancel_by_task sets already_finished when the run completed or failed. In that case the RPC answers cancelled: false without calling mark_failed, record_completion or record_cancelled. A run paused on the user (AwaitingUser) is still a real cancel.

  • Frontend: a new subagentCancelResolved({ taskId, cancelled }) reducer settles the card by task id across the live timeline and settled turns: true → cancelled, false → no longer running. CancelTaskAction dispatches it with the RPC answer.

  • spawn_async_subagent_execute.rs is pinned by the layout gate at 821 lines. The guard lives in its own module, and the execute file changes by arm + disarm only (net −0 lines). One comment was re-wrapped to 100 columns with the same words.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case):

    • an_aborted_task_still_reports_failed: a real spawned task aborted while the guard is armed still reports.
    • a_disarmed_guard_sends_nothing
    • no_sink_is_a_no_op
    • cancel_by_task_flags_a_run_that_already_finished: completed and failed runs are flagged, awaiting-user is not.
    • slice tests for subagentCancelResolved: settles by task id, ignores other tasks, never rewrites a settled row.
    • card test: the cancel answer is dispatched for both true and false.

Revert check: making Drop a no-op fails an_aborted_task_still_reports_failed ("an aborted task must report"), and forcing already_finished = false fails cancel_by_task_flags_a_run_that_already_finished (task-cbt-done).

  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: every changed branch is covered by the tests above.

  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, behaviour-only change.

  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed under ## Related: N/A, no matrix row changes.

  • No new external network dependencies introduced.

  • Manual smoke checklist updated: N/A, no release-cut surface.

  • Linked issue closed via Closes #NNN: N/A, no tracking issue. The evidence is in this description.

Impact

  • Desktop and web chat: cancelled or already-finished background delegations settle instead of spinning forever, including after a reload for runs cancelled after this change. Cards stuck before this change settle on one Cancel click, because the card now reads cancelled: false.
  • No wire or contract change. subagent_cancel returns the same {cancelled, taskId} shape; only a finished run's answer changes, from true to false.
  • Stop and thread delete also abort through the registry, so their aborted children now report subagent_failed too.

Related

  • Closes: N/A
  • Follow-up PR(s)/TODOs: stop_for_thread calls mark_failed on every registered child, including finished-but-unswept ones, which is the same overwrite fixed here for Cancel. It is left for a follow-up to keep this change scoped.

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: an aborted background sub-agent emits subagent_failed; Cancel on a finished run is a no-op that answers cancelled: false; the card settles from the cancel answer.
  • User-visible effect: "Cancel task" works, and delegation cards stop spinning once the sub-agent is gone.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: a normal completion or failure still reports from its own branch, because the guard is disarmed before those branches run. An awaiting-user cancel still marks the session failed and posts the notice.
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: the new event is the same SubagentFailed the task's own error branch sends, so the bridge, mirror and ledger handling is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Task cancellation status now updates correctly in the conversation view, including when a task finishes or fails before the cancellation request is processed.
    • Cancelling an already-finished task preserves its completed or failed status and does not cause the session to fail.
    • Tasks interrupted before returning now report their cancellation status in the conversation view.

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The pull request adds a complete end-to-end cancellation pipeline: the backend distinguishes late cancels from real ones via `already_finished`, the RPC returns an `outcome` field, the frontend dispatches `subagentCancelResolved` on the RPC reply, and an `AbortReport` guard ensures an aborted background task still sends a terminal progress event. All prior findings are resolved. A potential race remains where the AbortReport's synthetic `SubagentFailed` could arrive before the cancel RPC reply, causing the card to show an error instead of cancelled, but the common order (RPC reply first) and the inactivity guard prevent permanent damage in most cases. 📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes distinguish active subagent cancellations from requests for tasks that have already finished. Detached task aborts report terminal progress. Cancellation responses update matching task rows in the conversation timeline.

Subagent cancellation lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify cancellation outcomes

The registry returns whether a task had already finished. The control handler returns the recorded outcome for finished tasks and reports unknown for unrecognized tasks. Tests cover completed, failed, awaiting-user, and unknown statuses.
Report detached task aborts

AbortReport sends a pending terminal event, or a synthetic SubagentFailed event, when a detached task is dropped before delivery completes. The execution path disarms the report after handling the run result. Tests cover abort reporting and cancellation responses.
Apply cancellation results to task rows

The API result includes an optional outcome. The task card dispatches the cancellation response, and the reducer maps it to a status on matching active rows. Tests cover response outcomes, unmatched tasks, restored rows, and already-settled rows.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8b48d

The cancellation flow appears mergeable with a bounded test-coverage gap: seed finished sessions so the test protects their persisted state against future regressions.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8b48d

A cancellation can make an unresolved delegation appear cancelled even when the app cannot determine whether its work already finished. That could give a misleading account of what the delegated agent did. The change does not show a new path for an outside party to control agents.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: An unknown cancellation outcome is rendered as a confirmed cancellation. If a finished task has left the registry while its timeline row remains active, the card can imply that delegated work was stopped when it may already have executed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified misrepresentation affects delegation status in the client’s live and restored timelines; the reducer matches active rows by task ID across threads. The evidence does not establish cross-user or cross-service reachability.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A user can request cancellation of an active-looking card after the core has lost its registry entry. The resulting unknown answer settles that card as cancelled, although the answer does not establish whether the delegated agent already acted. Known finished outcomes and already-terminal rows limit this case.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The card sends its task ID through the existing core cancellation call; the registry classifies the returned task status. Terminal-event reporting uses the existing parent progress sender rather than a new tool-execution authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Registry status is mirrored to a task ledger by a watcher, while the client can also rehydrate a persisted turn snapshot. The reviewed evidence does not establish an atomic reconciliation between those records, terminal progress delivery, and a locally settled card.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before displaying an unknown task as cancelled, reconcile it with a durable terminal record or display it as unresolved. This would distinguish “nothing is running” from “cancellation stopped the work.”

Assert the rendered terminal state after Cancel.

The applicable guideline requires behavior tests. This test only checks the mocked dispatch call. It does not update the card projection, so it can pass while the card still shows the running state and Cancel button. Drive the cancellation through a store-backed fixture, or the equivalent parent update, and assert the rendered terminal state for both cancelled: true and cancelled: false.

Rebased onto main (433aa6a97) and addressed review in b0e0c34cd. All 7 threads were answered and resolved above.

On the CodeRabbit nitpick about SubagentTaskCard.test.tsx asserting rendered terminal state: the card holds no status of its own. It is a projection of the assistant-ui tool part (readSubagentCall → TaskCardState), and that part is rebuilt from the Redux row by toolPart. So the terminal state is asserted where it is decided: the slice tests check that subagentCancelResolved moves the row to cancelled / success / error for each outcome, and the existing card test renders a failed delegation as failed covers the row → card mapping. The card test checks the one thing the card itself does, which is dispatching the core's answer. Rendering the card through a live store would need a mounted assistant-ui thread runtime, which these unit tests stub out on purpose (TaskTranscript mock).

CI: Lanes / CI Fast failures on the previous head also appear on #6673 (a PR that only touches modules/connectors.rs) and are not introduced here: fleet_prompt_tests, typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls, openhuman-embed runtime_agents, all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled, and dep-sim. Conversations.render.test.tsx's two Stop tests also fail on upstream/main's own frontend (checked locally), and the CLI approval e2e passes locally. cargo clippy -p openhuman -- -D warnings (default and product features) reports only security/credentials/ops/gated_services.rs:83, which this PR does not touch.

147-153: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add coverage for the store-to-card settlement path.

This test verifies the API call and dispatched action, but its mocked dispatch cannot update the assistant-ui props that determine the rendered card state. The test can pass while the card keeps its spinner and Cancel button.

Add a store-backed integration assertion that dispatches subagentCancelResolved and checks the resulting terminal card state. The reducer tests cover the state transition, but they do not cover the mapping from the updated timeline to toolPart and then to SubagentTaskCard.

…t is cancelled

A background delegation's card only stops spinning when its sub-agent
sends SubagentCompleted / SubagentFailed on the parent's progress
channel. Cancel (and Stop, and thread delete) go through the detached
task registry, which aborts the tokio task: the future is dropped at its
current await and never reaches its own Cancelled branch, so nothing is
sent. The card kept spinning, the saved subagent row stayed `running`,
and every later Cancel returned `cancelled: false`, which the card
ignored.

A late Cancel also found finished runs: a completed run stays in the
registry until the terminal sweep, so Cancel rewrote a completed session
as "cancelled by user" and queued a false "you cancelled" notice.

- AbortReport: a drop guard armed around the background run. If the
task is dropped before the run returns, it try_sends SubagentFailed on
the channel the task already holds, so the bridge emits
subagent_failed, the turn-state mirror settles the row, and the run
ledger records the end, the same as a normal failure.
- cancel_by_task flags a run that already completed or failed
(already_finished); the RPC then answers cancelled: false without
rewriting the session or recording a cancellation. A run paused on
the user is still a real cancel.
- The card settles from the cancel answer (subagentCancelResolved,
matched by task id): true -> cancelled, false -> no longer running.
… report, settle restored rows

Review follow-ups on the cancel fix:

- subagent_cancel no longer lets the card assume success. When nothing was
cancelled it now answers with `outcome`: `completed` / `failed` from the
registry, or `unknown` when the core no longer knows the task. The card
maps them to success / error / cancelled, so a failed run cannot be
painted as a success and an unknown one is never claimed as done.
- AbortReport: if the progress channel is full at abort time, hand the
SubagentFailed to a spawned task that waits for room instead of
dropping the only event that settles the card.
- subagentCancelResolved also settles matching rows restored into
turnTimelinesByThread (a detached run that outlived its turn and was
  reloaded into a past-turn timeline).
… E2E-test cancel

Second review round on the cancel fix:

- The guard was disarmed as soon as the run returned, before the terminal
progress send. A late Cancel aborts even a finished task (the registry
aborts unconditionally), and an abort during that send lost the real
SubagentCompleted/Failed. The terminal events now go through
  AbortReport::deliver, which remembers the event while it is in flight;
the guard stays armed until the task ends, and an abort mid-send
re-delivers the real outcome instead of nothing. The five send sites
shrink to one call each (execute file 820 -> 809; layout pin lowered).
- subagentCancelResolved also settles the nested activity status, which
drives the card's own transcript spinner.
- Tests: an abort during delivery re-sends the real completion; a
delivered outcome is not reported twice; the RPC test snapshots the
durable store instead of asserting it is absent; the slice test checks
  settled rows through isActiveTimelineStatus.
- New E2E (agent_harness_e2e): a real spawn_async_subagent child held
mid-model-call is cancelled over openhuman.subagent_cancel; the SSE
stream the app renders from receives subagent_failed for that task, and
a second cancel answers cancelled:false with outcome "unknown".

Second review round, addressed in 8b48d1b6f, rebased on main 12505f101 (v0.64.4). All 28 threads are replied to and resolved.

Fixed

  • Late cancel during terminal delivery (CodeRabbit ×2): the guard was disarmed before the terminal send, so an abort during that send (a late Cancel aborts even a finished run) lost the real result. Every terminal event now goes through AbortReport::deliver, which keeps the event while it is in flight, and the guard stays armed until the task ends. An abort mid-send re-delivers the real SubagentCompleted / SubagentFailed. The five send sites became one call each, so spawn_async_subagent_execute.rs went from 820 to 809 lines, and its layout pin is lowered to 809.
  • Nested activity status (tinysweeper): cancel now settles activity.status along with the row, since it drives the card's nested transcript.
  • Tests: the slice tests assert through isActiveTimelineStatus, and the RPC test snapshots the durable store before and after instead of asserting that it is absent.

E2E coverage (the repeated tinysweeper request)
New tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs::cancelling_a_running_background_subagent_settles_it: a real spawn_async_subagent child, held mid-model-call, is cancelled over openhuman.subagent_cancel. The test asserts cancelled: true, then the subagent_failed event for that task on the client SSE stream, then cancelled: false, outcome: "unknown" on a second cancel. Revert check: with the guard's report disabled it fails with timed out waiting for SSE event subagent_failed.

Not changed

  • "Guard not wired" (tinysweeper ×2): it is wired (registered in tools.rs, armed and delivered in spawn_async_subagent_execute.rs). The E2E above fails without it.

Local validation on this head

  • Core tests: 50 passed.
  • E2E: passes.
  • vitest (changed files): 64 passed.
  • tsc: clean.
  • cargo clippy -p openhuman -- -D warnings: the only error is security/credentials/ops/gated_services.rs:83, which this PR does not touch.

CI: failures inherited from main, not from this PR. #6689, which makes an unrelated change on the same main, fails the identical set:

  • fleet_prompt_tests::every_prompt_names_only_tools_its_agent_can_call
  • typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls

  • all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled
  • the clippy-product / embed-clippy / tinyhumans-clippy / gate-contract-tests / rust-core-coverage lanes

The two Conversations.render Stop tests also fail on upstream/main's own frontend.

Cover cancellation through the production path

This changes the detached-subagent terminal-event path and relies on AbortReport to synthesize and preserve cancellation failures when the task is aborted or the progress channel is full. There is still no end-to-end test exercising cancellation through this production path, so a regression could again leave the UI without a terminal event. Add a test that cancels a detached subagent while its progress channel is full and asserts that exactly one terminal failure/completion event is eventually observed.

Each subsequent register call records a spawned session and starts a status watcher, so the store cannot remain the literal empty JSON array. Wire AbortReport into detached subagent execution

This introduces the guard type and tests it, but the change contains no production call site that arms it around spawn_async_subagent (or the detached task it cancels). Exercise cancellation through the production path

This test validates AbortReport in an isolated task, but it never invokes spawn_async_subagent, DetachedTaskRegistry, or the real cancellation path. Restore the canary barrier when the test exits

The barrier is process-global, but it is cleared only by the final disarm_canary_barrier() call. Any failed assertion or panic before that point leaves the barrier armed and can block or alter later tests in this binary, potentially causing a cascade of unrelated timeouts. Use an RAII guard whose Drop implementation disarms the barrier, or otherwise guarantee cleanup on every exit path.

Guard the canary barrier cleanup

[RULE] test-isolation

If any assertion or timeout after this call panics, disarm_canary_barrier() at the end of the test is skipped. The process-global barrier and in-flight state then remain armed for later tests, which can stall any subsequent worker request whose prompt contains either canary and can produce cascading failures. Use an RAII guard (or otherwise guarantee cleanup during unwinding) instead of relying on the final statement.

Avoid race where AbortReport sends synthetic failure before cancel RPC reply

When a user clicks Cancel, the cancel RPC handler aborts the tokio task, triggering AbortReport::drop which sends a synthetic SubagentFailed with error "sub-agent was cancelled". The RPC reply (which returns {cancelled: true}) is sent immediately after the abort, but the two messages travel different paths (SSE stream vs HTTP response) and may arrive at the frontend in either order. If SubagentFailed arrives first, the frontend's subagentDone reducer sets the row status to 'error', and then the RPC reply's subagentCancelResolved does nothing because the row is already inactive (isActiveTimelineStatus('error') is false). The final state is error instead of cancelled, which misleads the user.

This race is uncommon (the RPC reply is typically processed before the async synthetic event), but it is not eliminated. Consider either:

  • Having cancel_by_task pass a flag that prevents the AbortReport from firing (e.g., a cancellation token scoped to the user action), or
  • Making the AbortReport send a SubagentCancelled event (which the frontend would need to handle) instead of SubagentFailed, or
  • Having the subagentCancelResolved reducer force-override rows even when inactive, or
  • Ignoring SubagentFailed for a task that has an outstanding cancel RPC.

Seed durable session records for both finished tasks.

The finished branch currently skips mark_failed, but this test does not prove that guard. register records task metadata and does not create a durable session row. With [], an erroneous mark_failed call finds no row and leaves the file unchanged.

Seed matching records for both session IDs. Compare the complete records before and after cancellation, not only their status. mark_failed can also rewrite current_task_id, latest_error, and timestamps on an already-failed record.

`nested_subagent_dispatch_runs_on_a_constrained_worker_stack` overflowed
its 1 MiB worker intermittently in CI (every PR on main: tinyhumansai#6672, tinyhumansai#6689,
tinyhumansai#6693) and deterministically locally.

Measured, not assumed: the test fit in 512 KiB at 9b69475 and needs over
1 MiB on main. A first-parent bisect lands on tinyhumansai#6677 (default-on Langfuse
telemetry); splitting that merge shows the tinyagents bump is clean and the
cause is the child-trace export it wires into the sub-agent dispatch. With
usage sharing now on by default, every delegated turn spawns
export_subagent_journal_trace, which reads the child's whole journal and
builds its observation tree before push_observations refuses for lack of a
live session. In the test that work lands on the constrained worker and
overflows it; everywhere without a session it is pure waste.

journal_push_ready() runs push_observations' own gates (allowed environment,
http ingestion URL, live session token) and the export checks it before
reading the journal. The test is back under 512 KiB. Production workers are
16 MiB (AGENT_WORKER_STACK_BYTES), so this was a test-lane overflow and a
wasted journal read per child turn, not a production crash.

Every PR on main 12505f1 failed the same checks (#6672 and #6689 had an
identical failing set). Seven causes:

- DomainGroup::COUNT stayed 21 when the Medulla variant was removed
  (57b5929); ALL and index() have 20. `domain_group_all_lists_every_variant`.
- The Medulla removal's rename changed the expected value in
`new_drops_header_unsafe_characters` but not its input ("med ulla").
- A real bug (c4b1e94 made auth/permission zero-retry classes): an
unknown-tool answer echoes the attempted and valid tool names, and the
keyword classifier read `forbidden_tool` (or any name with
`unauthorized`/`403`) as an authentication failure, halting the run on
the model's first wrong guess. `recovery_policy` now treats
"unknown tool `…`" as a correctable validation failure (one retry)
  before any keyword sniffing. `typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls`.
- The harness now retries an empty completion once (43660e6); the
empty-response turn tests scripted one empty reply, so the retry got the
provider's default "done". They now script both attempts.
- The orchestrator prompt names `desktop_goal` with its route,
`tool_search`; it is ToolExposure::Deferred. Documented as a third
  KNOWN_UNCALLABLE kind ("Deferred") in fleet_prompt_tests.
- `all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled` asserted browser_open in the
gates-off lane; the browser tools are the `modules` gate's.
- clippy::let_underscore_future on the detached skill-metadata warm-up in
gated_services.rs, which failed every clippy lane.
- Frontend: 7eb87f5 moved saving a stopped partial from the Stop click to
the core-confirmed chat_cancelled (ChatRuntimeProvider, tested there).
Two Conversations.render tests still expected the optimistic save; they
now assert the new contract (request the cancel, no local save).
