Summary

Problem

Failing check Cause
core::all::tests::domain_group_all_lists_every_variant (gates-off smoke + coverage) 57b592999 removed DomainGroup::Medulla from the enum, ALL and index(), but left COUNT = 21 (there are now 20).
api::product::tests::new_drops_header_unsafe_characters The same removal's rename changed the expected value to "opencompany" but kept the input "med ulla", which still normalises to "medulla".
slug_filter_typed_mode_tests::typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls Real bug. c4b1e9473 made authentication / permission zero-retry classes. recovery_policy falls back to keyword sniffing over the error text, and an unknown-tool answer echoes the attempted name and every valid tool name. A guess called forbidden_tool, or any belt tool whose name contains unauthorized / forbidden / 401 / 403, classifies as authentication, and the run stops with "Stopping after 1 attempt(s): failure class authentication still blocks operation …" instead of letting the model correct its call.
agent_turn_loop_tests::turn_errors_on_empty_text_response / turn_errors_on_none_text_response 43660e6ef retries an empty completion once. The tests scripted one empty reply, so the retry got ScriptedProvider's default "done".
fleet_prompt_tests::every_prompt_names_only_tools_its_agent_can_call The orchestrator prompt names desktop_goal together with its route (tool_search finds it). The tool is ToolExposure::Deferred, so it is off the belt by design, and the test has no category for that.
execution_and_serde_tests::all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled (gates-off) It asserts browser_open unconditionally, but the browser tools are registered under #[cfg(feature = "modules")].
clippy-product, embed-clippy, tinyhumans-clippy, Rust Quality clippy::let_underscore_future on the detached skill-metadata warm-up in security/credentials/ops/gated_services.rs:83.
Conversations.render Stop tests (vitest coverage) 7eb87f51e moved saving a stopped partial from the Stop click to the core-confirmed chat_cancelled (ChatRuntimeProvider.onCancelled, tested in ChatRuntimeProvider.test.tsx). Two tests still expected the old optimistic save.

Solution

  • recovery_policy: an error starting with unknown tool ` is ("validation", 1), decided before any keyword sniffing. A wrong call is correctable; it is not a credential blocker. A genuine 401 Unauthorized still classifies as authentication.
  • DomainGroup::COUNT = 20. The product test input is now "open company", which keeps what it tests (unsafe characters dropped).
  • The empty-response tests script both attempts, with a comment pointing at the retry.
  • KNOWN_UNCALLABLE gets a documented third kind, Deferred: a ToolExposure::Deferred tool that the prompt names together with tool_search. It is still a ratchet: an entry that stops firing fails the test.
  • The browser assertion follows the gate: names.contains("browser_open") == cfg!(feature = "modules").
  • gated_services.rs: a bare tokio::task::spawn_blocking(...); statement, the repo's detach idiom, with a comment.
  • The two Conversations.render tests assert the new contract: Stop requests the cancel and saves nothing locally (including across repeated clicks). The save and its deduplication are asserted in ChatRuntimeProvider.test.tsx.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case): new an_unknown_tool_is_a_correctable_call_not_a_blocker covers an attempted name containing forbidden, a valid-tools list containing UNAUTHORIZED, and a genuine 401 that stays authentication. The typed_mode assertion now prints the output it got. Revert check: without the classifier line, both it and typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls fail.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: the only product line added (the unknown-tool branch) is exercised by the tests above.
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, test and lint repairs plus one classifier fix; no feature rows change.
  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed under ## Related: N/A
  • No new external network dependencies introduced
  • Manual smoke checklist updated: N/A
  • Linked issue closed via Closes #NNN: N/A, no tracking issue.

Impact

  • Runtime: an agent that guesses a tool name no longer risks ending its run when the guessed name, or any tool name on its belt, contains an auth-sounding word. It gets its normal retry.
  • CI: unblocks main and every PR on it. No behaviour change elsewhere.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unknown-tool errors can trigger one recovery attempt, while authentication errors remain handled separately.
    • Streamed replies are saved only after cancellation is confirmed.
  • Reliability
    • Improved handling of empty responses and background skill metadata loading.
    • Avoided unnecessary progress-trace processing when export is unavailable.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for cancellation, tool recovery, deferred tool availability, browser availability, and product-name normalization.

Every PR on main 12505f1 failed the same checks (tinyhumansai#6672 and tinyhumansai#6689 had an
identical failing set). Seven causes:

- DomainGroup::COUNT stayed 21 when the Medulla variant was removed
  (57b5929); ALL and index() have 20. `domain_group_all_lists_every_variant`.
- The Medulla removal's rename changed the expected value in
`new_drops_header_unsafe_characters` but not its input ("med ulla").
- A real bug (c4b1e94 made auth/permission zero-retry classes): an
unknown-tool answer echoes the attempted and valid tool names, and the
keyword classifier read `forbidden_tool` (or any name with
`unauthorized`/`403`) as an authentication failure, halting the run on
the model's first wrong guess. `recovery_policy` now treats
"unknown tool `…`" as a correctable validation failure (one retry)
  before any keyword sniffing. `typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls`.
- The harness now retries an empty completion once (43660e6); the
empty-response turn tests scripted one empty reply, so the retry got the
provider's default "done". They now script both attempts.
- The orchestrator prompt names `desktop_goal` with its route,
`tool_search`; it is ToolExposure::Deferred. Documented as a third
  KNOWN_UNCALLABLE kind ("Deferred") in fleet_prompt_tests.
- `all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled` asserted browser_open in the
gates-off lane; the browser tools are the `modules` gate's.
- clippy::let_underscore_future on the detached skill-metadata warm-up in
gated_services.rs, which failed every clippy lane.
- Frontend: 7eb87f5 moved saving a stopped partial from the Stop click to
the core-confirmed chat_cancelled (ChatRuntimeProvider, tested there).
Two Conversations.render tests still expected the optimistic save; they
now assert the new contract (request the cancel, no local save).

Tiny Sweeper review

This PR repairs failing tests and lints. Key behavioral changes: the Stop button no longer optimistically saves partial replies (deferred to core confirmation), an early gate skips reading child journals when Langfuse push cannot proceed, unknown-tool errors are correctly classified as validation (not authentication), and deferred tool routing is validated. Test assertions are updated to match new behavior. This iteration adds a call counter to the test ScriptedProvider, asserts retry counts, and adds an e2e test for unknown-tool recovery.

What changed

The diff touches 15 files across the frontend test, agent tests, agent turn loop tests, progress tracing, fleet prompt tests, typed mode tests, repeated failure middleware, classified failure tests, product tests, domain group count, credential gated services, tool execution tests, and agent harness e2e tests.

Features

  • Modified — Stop button defers partial reply save to core confirmation: Prevents a race condition where optimistically saving the partial reply on click could leave a stopped bubble when the cancel did not land. (app/src/pages/__tests__/Conversations.render.test.tsx#describe('Conversations — smoke render (Replace the onboarding bot with a managed guided walkthrough using react-joyride #1123 welcome-lock removal)', () => {)
  • Added — Early gate to skip child journal read when push not ready: Avoids reading and converting child journals on every delegated turn when Langfuse export cannot proceed (no live session, skipped environment), reducing unnecessary work. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/export.rs#pub(crate) async fn export_subagent_journal_trace(, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/langfuse/journal_export.rs#pub(super) fn insert_run_telemetry_generation()
  • Added — Unknown-tool errors classified as validation: Prevents unknown-tool errors from being misclassified as authentication (zero retries), which halted runs on the first wrong guess; now they are correctable with one retry. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/middleware/repeated_failure.rs#pub(super) fn recovery_policy()
  • Internal refactor — Extract registered_tools from tool_universe: Allows reuse of the registered tools list without rebuilding the workspace for each test that needs it. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/registry/agents/fleet_prompt_tests.rs#fn render(def: &AgentDefinition, definitions: &[AgentDefinition]) -> String {)

Tests

  • modification — Stop button tests updated to expect no optimistic save; partial is saved only on core cancel confirmation.: Correctly reflects new behavior and prevents race condition. (app/src/pages/__tests__/Conversations.render.test.tsx#describe('Conversations — smoke render (Replace the onboarding bot with a managed guided walkthrough using react-joyride #1123 welcome-lock removal)', () => {)
  • addition — Test that unknown-tool errors are classified as validation (1 retry) not authentication (0 retries).: Correctly validates new classification logic. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/middleware_classified_failure_tests.rs#async fn legitimate_wait_polling_does_not_consume_transient_budget() {)
  • modification — Changed test identity from 'med ulla' to 'open company' to avoid false header-unsafe-character test failure.: Fixes test to match expected behavior. (crates/openhuman-core/src/api/product_tests.rs#fn new_drops_header_unsafe_characters() {)
  • modification — Updated assertion for browser_open to check it follows the modules feature gate.: Correctly accounts for feature-gated tools. (crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/ops_tests_execution_and_serde_tests.rs#fn all_tools_includes_browser_when_enabled() {)
  • modification — Improved assertion failure message in typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls test.: Improves debugging of test failures. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/subagent_host/ops_tests_slug_filter_typed_mode_tests.rs#async fn typed_mode_blocks_unallowed_tool_calls() {)
  • addition — End-to-end test: a wrong tool guess is retried and does not block as authentication.: Verifies unknown-tool recovery through the real agent turn. (tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs#async fn cancelling_a_running_background_subagent_settles_it_inner() {)

Findings

  • medium · tests · Add e2e test for Stop button no longer optimistically saving partial reply — The unit test now asserts `threadApi.appendMessage` is **not** called on Stop click, but the behaviour change — saving the partial reply on confirmed cancel rather than optimistica (app/src/pages/\_\_tests\_\_/Conversations\.render\.test\.tsx:1183)
  • medium · e2e · End-to-end job `Rust Feature-Gate Smoke (gates off)` will not run on this change — `Rust Feature-Gate Smoke (gates off)` in `.github/workflows/ci-lite.yml` will not run for this pull request: the forge reports it as skipped, so a job condition was false for this (\.github/workflows/ci\-lite\.yml)

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change updates Stop-button persistence tests, unknown-tool recovery classification, retry and tool exposure checks, core assertions, warm-up task handling, and Langfuse journal export readiness.

Changes

Conversation stop behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stop cancellation assertions
app/src/pages/__tests__/Conversations.render.test.tsx
The tests check that a single Stop click or repeated clicks do not immediately append the streamed partial reply locally.

Agent recovery and tool checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unknown-tool recovery classification
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/middleware/repeated_failure.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/middleware_classified_failure_tests.rs, tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs
Unknown-tool errors receive a validation classification with one retry. The unit and end-to-end tests check recovery from unknown-tool errors and distinguish them from a genuine authentication failure.
Empty-response retry tests
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/agent_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/agent_turn_loop_tests.rs
The empty-string and missing-text tests verify that the provider is called twice before the empty-response error is returned.
Tool prompt and registration checks
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/registry/agents/fleet_prompt_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/subagent_host/ops_tests_slug_filter_typed_mode_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/ops_tests_execution_and_serde_tests.rs
The registry tests check deferred exposure and prompt routing for registered tools. The ratchet adds an orchestrator/desktop_goal deferred row. A blocked-tool assertion reports the actual output if it fails, and the browser-tool test matches registration to the modules feature.

Core checks and service setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Core expectations and warm-up setup
crates/openhuman-core/src/api/product_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/core/all.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/security/credentials/ops/gated_services.rs
The changes update a product-normalization input and domain count, and stop explicitly discarding the skill metadata warm-up task handle.

Langfuse journal export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Journal push readiness check
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/langfuse/journal_export.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/langfuse.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/export.rs
The readiness check requires an eligible environment, an HTTP ingestion URL, and a live session token. Subagent journal export returns before reading the child journal when the check fails.

Suggested reviewers: senamakel

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e1dc1

A child trace can be lost in a narrow credential-refresh timing window. This affects observability rather than the agent turn, so the PR is otherwise mergeable with the pre-read gate adjusted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e1dc1

The changes are limited in scope and do not show a bypass of tool authorization. One error-handling shortcut could allow an extra attempt when a tool returns misleading error text; that path has not been shown to be exploitable.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new unknown-tool prefix check does not establish that an error came from an unknown-tool result. If a registered tool returns error text with that prefix, its failure can receive a validation retry instead of the stop applicable to a genuine authentication, policy, or uncertain-side-effect failure. The effect on an attacker-controlled path is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The possible error-classification effect is confined to recovery decisions in an agent run. The evidence does not show a new tool privilege, production entrypoint, or externally permitted tracing destination.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an external party can influence a registered tool’s error text to start with the synthetic unknown-tool prefix, that text can cause the recovery middleware to offer a correction attempt rather than immediately pause on the underlying failure. No such attacker-to-error path or authorization bypass was verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The tracing preflight preserves the existing destination and session-token checks. In recovery, body-level failures are handled first and ordinary 401 and structured 403 errors retain stopping classifications, but the new unknown-tool decision relies on rendered text rather than proven error origin.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The retry budget limits a repeated validation failure, while the unchanged runtime policy also caps model and tool calls. The available evidence does not establish recovery behavior for concurrent tool outcomes or interruption during a correction attempt.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry a distinct unknown-tool result type or provenance marker into recovery, so arbitrary registered-tool error text cannot select the synthetic unknown-tool retry policy.

Assert the desktop_goal deferred route in the fleet ratchet.

every_prompt_names_only_tools_its_agent_can_call only records the orchestrator/desktop_goal exception when the prompt names it. It does not assert that desktop_goal remains registered with ToolExposure::Deferred or that the orchestrator prompt routes discovery through tool_search. Add focused assertions for both properties so either regression fails the ratchet.

Addressed CodeRabbit's nitpick (pin the Deferred row) in 20503182a.

New deferred_rows_name_deferred_tools_the_prompt_routes_through_tool_search: for every KNOWN_UNCALLABLE row whose reason starts with `ToolExposure::Deferred`, it asserts that the registered tool's exposure() is ToolExposure::Deferred, and that the agent's rendered prompt names both the tool and `tool_search`. A tool feature-gated out of the build is skipped, because its row cannot fire either. To share the registry, registered_tools() was factored out of tool_universe().

Revert check: with desktop_goal's exposure changed to Direct, the test fails with `desktop_goal` is listed as Deferred for `orchestrator` but is not deferred.

`nested_subagent_dispatch_runs_on_a_constrained_worker_stack` overflowed
its 1 MiB worker intermittently in CI (every PR on main: tinyhumansai#6672, tinyhumansai#6689,
tinyhumansai#6693) and deterministically locally.

Measured, not assumed: the test fit in 512 KiB at 9b69475 and needs over
1 MiB on main. A first-parent bisect lands on tinyhumansai#6677 (default-on Langfuse
telemetry); splitting that merge shows the tinyagents bump is clean and the
cause is the child-trace export it wires into the sub-agent dispatch. With
usage sharing now on by default, every delegated turn spawns
export_subagent_journal_trace, which reads the child's whole journal and
builds its observation tree before push_observations refuses for lack of a
live session. In the test that work lands on the constrained worker and
overflows it; everywhere without a session it is pure waste.

journal_push_ready() runs push_observations' own gates (allowed environment,
http ingestion URL, live session token) and the export checks it before
reading the journal. The test is back under 512 KiB. Production workers are
16 MiB (AGENT_WORKER_STACK_BYTES), so this was a test-lane overflow and a
wasted journal read per child turn, not a production crash.

Added 5b50c5371: a fix for the constrained-stack overflow, which is the eighth cause of main's red.

nested_subagent_dispatch_runs_on_a_constrained_worker_stack aborted with tokio-rt-worker has overflowed its stack intermittently in CI (on #6672, #6689, and this PR's previous head) and deterministically locally. I measured it rather than raising the budget:

Build Smallest worker stack that passes
9b69475a9 ≤ 512 KiB
main > 1 MiB
first-parent bisect first bad: #6677 (default-on Langfuse telemetry)
#6677's parent + only its tinyagents bump ≤ 512 KiB (the bump is clean)
#6677 with journal_run_id: None ≤ 512 KiB
this fix ≤ 512 KiB

Cause: with usage sharing now on by default, every delegated turn spawns export_subagent_journal_trace. That function read the child's whole journal and built its observation tree before push_observations refused for lack of a live session. In the test, that work landed on the 1 MiB worker and overflowed it. Anywhere else without a session it was wasted work on every child turn.

Fix: journal_push_ready() applies push_observations' own gates (allowed environment, http ingestion URL, live session token), and the export checks it before reading the journal. Production workers are 16 MiB (AGENT_WORKER_STACK_BYTES), so the user-facing effect is one wasted journal read per child turn, not a crash.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Consume the detached JoinHandle explicitly.

tokio::task::spawn_blocking returns a #[must_use] JoinHandle in Tokio 1.53.1. The standalone expression emits unused_must_use, and CI promotes that warning to an error with cargo clippy -p openhuman -- -D warnings. Keep the detached behavior by restoring explicit result consumption.

Assert that both scripted responses are consumed.

ScriptedProvider returns "done" when its queue is empty. If the retry is removed, the first empty response can still produce the asserted EmptyProviderResponse, while the second response remains unused. No test on this turn path asserts response consumption or model-call count.

Addressed the latest round in e77461b86:

  • CodeRabbit nitpick (both scripted responses consumed): turn_errors_on_empty_text_response / turn_errors_on_none_text_response now assert that the provider's script is empty after the turn. That pins the retry-once, so dropping the retry fails the test rather than silently passing on the first empty reply.
  • CodeRabbit outside-diff comment and tinysweeper thread (JoinHandle must-use): kept the bare statement. In tokio 1.53.1, neither JoinHandle nor spawn_blocking is #[must_use], and clippy with -D warnings is green on this head. let _ = is what failed clippy on main. Details are in the thread.
  • tinysweeper e2e (wrong tool guess): new harness E2E a_wrong_tool_guess_is_retried_not_treated_as_an_auth_blocker, revert-checked.
  • tinysweeper e2e (Stop): already covered by chat-harness-cancel.spec.ts.

🟡 Minor · Do not use the live credential as a pre-read gate. · export.rs:142-150

crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/progress_tracing/export.rs:142-150
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not use the live credential as a pre-read gate.

journal_push_ready resolves the credential before read_run_events(...).await. A session can be installed or refreshed before the push would resolve its credential. The early return then drops a child trace that push_observations could export. Let push_observations perform the authoritative credential check after the journal read.

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff note ("do not use the live credential as a pre-read gate", export.rs:142-150): keeping the credential check, deliberately.

  • Without it, the gate does not gate. The default ingestion URL resolves to an allowed environment, so on URL and environment alone journal_push_ready passes in every signed-out context. The export would go back to reading the child's whole journal and building its observation tree just for push_observations to refuse, which is the waste this PR removes. It would also bring back the measured overflow: nested_subagent_dispatch_runs_on_a_constrained_worker_stack needs over 1 MiB with that read and ≤ 512 KiB without it.
  • The race window is one journal read. A session installed during those milliseconds costs one child's best-effort trace. The next child turn exports normally.
