Jang Wonyoung (Korean: 장원영; Japanese: チャン・ウォニョン; or simply Wonyoung) is a South Korean singer, songwriter, model and MC under Starship Entertainment. She is a member of the South Korean girl group, IVE, and is a former member of the project girl group IZ*ONE.
Early Life & Education
Jang Wonyoung was born on August 31, 2004, in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. She has one sibling - an older sister named Jang Jin-young that was born in 2001. In 2024, Jinyoung made her debut as an actress under the stage name Jang Da Ah.
As a young child, Wonyoung attended an English-speaking kindergarten. For her education, she attended and graduated from Seoul Sinyongsan Elementary School. Furthermore, she attended Yonggang Middle School, but later dropped out. Instead, Wonyoung passed her Middle School Graduation and High School Qualification Exams. She attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA), where she was a student of the Department of Practical Music. She graduated from SOPA on February 9, 2023.[2]
Career
Pre-Debut
Wonyoung was street-cast by Starship Entertainment in April 2017 while she was attending her older sister's graduation ceremony.[3] According to the agency scout, Wonyoung was memorable due of her "tall stature and cute face". Eventually, Wonyoung passed her audition and officially joined Starship Entertainment's trainee system.
By the time Wonyoung became a contestant on the reality-survival show Produce 48, she had been a trainee for 1 year and 2 months.
May 2018–April 2021: Produce 48, IZ*ONE
On May 11, 2018, Wonyoung was revealed to be a contestant on Mnet's reality-survival show Produce 48, where she would be representing Starship Entertainment. On August 30, during the show's final episode, she finished in first place, hence becoming a member of IZ*ONE.[4]
IZ*ONE officially debuted on October 29, 2018 with their first mini album Color*IZ and its title track "La Vie en Rose".
On April 29, 2021, following the expiration of their special contract with Off the Record Entertainment, IZ*ONE officially disbanded. Afterwards, Wonyoung returned to Starship Entertainment as a trainee.
August–December 2021: Music Bank, debut with IVE
On August 22, 2021, Star News reported that Wonyoung and fellow former IZ*ONE member An Yujin would be members in Starship's upcoming girl group, set to debut in the second half of the year. Starship confirmed the plans, but did not share if the two would be part of the group.[5]
On September 27, Wonyoung was announced as a new MC for KBS's music show program Music Bank along with ENHYPEN's Sunghoon.[6] Her first appearance on the show took place on October 8.
On November 2, following the official reveal of the girl group's debuting name and logo, an article published on Naver confirmed that both Yujin and Wonyoung will re-debut as members of said group - IVE.[7] On November 5, Wonyoung was officially revealed as the group's third member.[8]
On November 9, it was announced that IVE will be debuting on December 1 with their first single album "Eleven".[9] On this day, the single album, along with its title track of the same name, were released.
2022: "Blue & Black"
On June 6, 2022, it was announced that members of IVE, OH MY GIRL, and CRAVITY would collaborate for a digital single that would be released as part of Starship Entertainment's ongoing collaboration project with Pepsi. That same day, the members of said groups that would be participating were revealed, including Wonyoung.[10] The collaborative single, titled "Blue & Black", was released on June 28.
On September 1, it was announced that Wonyoung had renewed her contract as an MC on Music Bank - this being the first time ever in the show's history that an MC was offered a contract renewal.[11]
2023: Departure from Music Bank
On January 11, 2023, Starship Entertainment confirmed that Wonyoung would be stepping down from her position at Music Bank as an MC after two years.[12] Her final broadcast took place on January 13.
