As Islam reached from the Arab region to the rest part of the world, the ubiquitous need for a place of worship developed several styles of mosque architecture. The earliest examples of mosques style in the region where Islam reached were indigenous and traditional. With the passage of time, the mosque architecture developed with the amalgamation of immigrated techniques and the regional indigenous architecture. With the arrival of Muslims in India, several indigenous styles were adopted for the earliest mosques. In Gujarat, a trabeated system with corbelled domes and richly ornamented pillars and ceilings was dominated by medieval architecture. Hence a similar style was adopted for the early mosques of medieval Gujarat. Later the arcuated system was blended with the indigenous architecture and a new style evolved. The features like minarets, arches and domes were added as the style grew. This paper investigates the development of mosque architecture in medieval Gujarat through several case studies.

Defects have always been a matter of concern for stakeholders in construction industry, as they l... more Defects have always been a matter of concern for stakeholders in construction industry, as they lead to additional running cost of project during the post occupancy stage. It is essential to identify the causes of these defects so that rectification measures can be expedited. For the purpose of research, the building life cycle is classified into three stages; design, construction and post occupancy. An investigation into the causes of defects is carried out through structured questionnaire survey based on Guttman’s scale, from architects working in Indian construction industry. Twelve causes of defects related to different stages of building were examined. The descriptive data analysis and cross-tabulation of data resulted in some interesting facts. The research concluded that major causes of defects in buildings are associated with construction and post occupancy stage of building, and can be listed as; dampness/seepage in buildings, poor workmanship, lack of quality control, improper installation of services and lack of maintenance.

The design studio has often been criticized for not keeping pace with the changing needs of the s... more The design studio has often been criticized for not keeping pace with the changing needs of the society and profession. Attempts to evolve alternative studio pedagogies to counter issues include concepts such as sustainability, computational thinking and social perspective to design. Public interest design (PID), advocates a socially conscious approach to design. The research aimed to develop a framework for the integration of the concept of PID in the conventional design studio, and measure its outcome through a mixed methods approach. A studio based on the designed framework was conducted for a single group in 2017 in the second year of the undergraduate course. Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data obtained from three different stakeholders i.e. students, faculty and users was performed through triangulation of data. The findings revealed that PID integrated design studio is effective in enhancing learning outcomes among students and making a worthwhile contribution in their immediate environments.

Purpose: Quality in the construction industry is an important issue yet ignored during the initia... more Purpose: Quality in the construction industry is an important issue yet ignored during the initial stages of the life cycle of a project, that is, the design and construction stage. The contribution of stakeholders, especially the architects is generally suspended though it has huge significance in terms of cost and time related to quality. This research endeavors to examine the issues related to the design and construction stages of the project from architects' purview, to understand the relative importance of these issues in the Indian construction industry.
Design/methodology/approach: The study of qualitative data conducted formed a basis for online quantitative data collection that was further analyzed with the help of cross-tabulation and multiple correspondence analysis methods.
Findings: The study concludes that the budget of a project is a corresponding factor related to quality concern for architects. The study also established that the quality issues corresponding to high budgets are closely related to the construction stage and are identified as preparation of checklist, and bidding process of hiring the contractor on the lowest bid.
Research limitations/implications: The study is limited to analyzing the perspective of architects; however, other stakeholders of the construction industry may represent a different opinion.
Practical implications: This research emphasizes the importance of the client's role, and need for integration and coordination among stakeholders in the construction industry for effective quality control and management.
Originality/value: The research presents an exhaustive literature review on quality issues and its importance with respect to cost implications, standard practices, sustainability and the life cycle of the project.

The glory of Indo-Islamic architecture has a long history, spanning from thirteenth century to mi... more The glory of Indo-Islamic architecture has a long history, spanning from thirteenth century to mid of nineteenth century. With the amalgamation of ancient Indian, Persian and Timurid architecture, medieval India encompasses distinct features in comparison to contemporary world. The sculpturesque quality of Indian architecture mingled with openness of Islamic architecture to create spectacular spaces and forms. First Sultans of Delhi and later Mughal patrons facilitated to carved the contemporary built environment. Imperial patronage dominated throughout medieval India and glorified the Indo-Islamic architecture till it reached its zenith during Shahjahan’s period and eventuated in the form of the magnificent Taj Mahal. With the declination of Mughal Empire, however, the patronage of monuments shifted from imperial to sub-imperial authorities, due to lack of emperor’s personal interest in building expensive monuments. But still a continuity of Indo-Islamic architecture could be observed in the late Mughal period through some important sub-imperial monuments. This paper explores the significance of Ghaziuddin Khan Complex, a monument of late Mughal period, in the development of Indo-Islamic architecture.
