◆What to wear, how to style each piece, what kind of impression to create―I talk about the outfits or items that appear in my narrative essay series centered on fashion, looking at them from a styling perspective. I also include photos of my outfits as examples◆

This time, in keeping with the series ▷ Ep.1 Introduction ◁, I’ll be writing about “Basic Style.”

It’s Hilda.

In Ep.1 Introduction, I wove together my thoughts and feelings about fashion as I began the series. So, it’s the foundation of the series.

In this first installment of “Reading Fashion,” I’d like to talk about “Basic Style”—a style that embodies the fundamentals of fashion.

1. About Basic Style

When you hear the term “Basic Style,” what kind of outfit comes to mind? First, let me explain what this style involves.

Q1. What kind of outfit is it?
It is an outfit created by combining simple pieces with minimal decorative detail.

Q2. What items are used to style this look?
It is mainly styled with tops and bottoms that are either plain or feature simple patterns. The items are usually in classic colors such as white, black, navy, gray, and brown.

Q3. What makes this style appealing?
Because it is built around simple pieces, it is less influenced by trends. It can be styled to look either polished or casual, making it suitable for a wide range of situations. On mornings when you cannot decide what to wear, it can also be a reassuring go-to.

2. Key Points and Styling Examples for Basic Style

There are many possible combinations within Basic Style. Among them, one of the easiest to incorporate, regardless of age or gender, is “a plain T-shirt paired with pants.”

First, I’ll explain the key points of this styling approach, and then share my own outfits as examples.

〈Key Points〉
While this look has the appeal of simplicity, it can easily end up looking like loungewear or giving an overly conventional impression. To avoid this, it is important to incorporate either “an element that tones down the casualness for a more polished look” or “one that adds character.” This can be done through any of the following.
・Accessories
・Color
・Materials
・Silhouette and Fit

◆LOOK 1: Styled Entirely in Brown

・The all-brown color palette and striped slacks emphasize the classic look. However, the flared slacks and platform shoes give it a more current feel, keeping the outfit from looking too dated.
・I added personality and expressed my taste through the accessories, mixing vintage and affordable pieces in a variety of materials.

◆LOOK 2: Styled Around White

・ To bring out the white, I chose greige straight-leg jeans. The color and silhouette tone down the casualness, creating a polished casual look.
・I used almost the same accessories as in LOOK 1 to add personality and express my taste.

~Note~
I took these two photos hoping I could use them on my account for a long time. The white one is for fashion-related articles, while the brown one is for posts related to the series. I post them wondering if I might have gone a little overboard with the posing...haha… If you happen to see them, please think to yourself with warmth, “You did your best.”

3. An Episode Offered Through Basic Style

Now, whether you’re someone with clothes in this style in your closet or someone without them—what did “you” think of this style, and how did it make you feel?

Because Basic Style is simple, every decision about which item to wear matters. The wearer’s individuality comes through in those choices. I believe it is a style that truly embodies the fundamentals of fashion.

“What does individuality mean?”—It might feel difficult.

The answer lies in “your days.” “Your individuality” is not determined by the quality or price of the items or by styling techniques. Day by day, what matters is picturing yourself as you would like to be. That vision comes through in fashion. It is “your individuality,” and it makes you glow.

What kind of days are you living? What kind of person do you want to be?—Hoping it will give you something to think about, I offer you this piece again.

It weaves my thoughts and reflections about fashion. This is why I am starting this series—together with the message I wish to convey.
