From My Closet To You
〜Narrative essays, weaving fashion and heart〜

1. Color and the Heart

This world is filled with countless colors. Although it varies from person to person, human vision is said to be able to distinguish about one million colors. In addition, some colors are known to be beyond what the human eye can see. And the way colors feel to us changes depending on our feelings. For example, the sky you see when you’re cheerful and when you’re gloomy. Each one would feel different. Color and our hearts are connected. So—what color did you choose to wear today? How were you feeling when you chose it?

2. Colors That Suit
Choosing colors in fashion can be tough. Does it suit me? Does it fit the mood I'm going for? Does it clash with other pieces?―Morning. A top in hand…then, back it goes. The hesitation just never ends. Yet “personal color analysis” helps identify the colors and combinations that suit you best. It's a reassuring guide when choosing makeup and hair colors, too. Still, its wide range of uses can sometimes make it feel a bit overwhelming. What really matters is reflecting on who we want to be, and making choices accordingly.

3. My Color
My personal color type is “Spring.” It is said that bright, clear colors suit me. Indeed, compared to darker, calmer tones, they make me look more lively and active. On the other hand, that impression feels a little distant from my inner self. If possible, I’d like to wear colors that express who I am inside too. Because of these feelings, I selected 4 colors that represent me and now wear them as my base colors in fashion. They were chosen based on my personal color type. So, here are stories about those colors―4 little tales tied to color.

4. White
The color of blank drawing paper—Beside me, my younger sister is drawing. Freely, naturally. I grip a crayon tightly. The next moment, her bright voice echoes, “Yay! Done!” She shows her drawing to our mother. Sadness wells up in me. Clutching a kindergarten bag, I hide my face. Before we were born, Mother used to paint. She even held a solo exhibition, I heard―my childhood dream. But my sister’s drawings always looked better than mine. I lacked confidence, unsure of what to draw. …Right now, give me…something only I can draw.

5. Beige
The color of faded books—Elementary school recess. I’m choosing a book. My classmates chatter in the classroom or play in the schoolyard. But I prefer going to the library. Every day, I borrow a book. When I read, another world unfolds before me. The wilderness where adventurers run, the garden where a doctor talks to animals, the study where a great detective ponders in silence. The chime rings―It's time to go back to class. I write my name in the sign-out sheet, open the door with the book in hand. …Ugh. I wish this time could last.

6. Brown
The color of warriors in battle—“Oh, it’s over!” On weekends at a friend’s place, I hang out with my usual crew and watch movies. A regular part of my middle school days. After the movie, we talk about what we thought. I get really fired up over stories about heroes who keep fighting, even when they're hurt. Those who don’t give up, no matter how covered in dust and dirt they are, stay with me. Beautiful—I don’t want to get hurt. But if I could change this weakness? …Maybe one day…me? …I wonder. What should I do?

7. Gold
The color of a bittersweet attempt—The first day of summer break in high school. I’m in the bathroom with my first box of bleach. It didn’t go well at first, yet I somehow managed to apply it. After a while, I rinse it out. As I’m drying it, a sense of anxiety slowly creeps in. Then―in the mirror, it’s a color much lighter than the one I wanted. The ends are just plain gold. Sigh…I pick up a few strands between my fingers and hold them up to the fluorescent light. …It’s okay. Next time, I’ll get there… to “beautiful.”

8. Your Color
I remember. Before adult life began, the smallest moments held a story. I want to embrace everything from those days. What kind of stories have you lived through? You and I are completely different. There’s no need to choose the same color. Express your individuality through color—that's what makes it truly 'personal'. So I hope you wear the color that carries your feelings. It makes you glow. Now, imagine—what color will you choose to wear tomorrow? How will you feel when you choose it?
