quite surprising
In Judaism you never say Y---H out loud (it's only one of the many names of Gd, and you're not supposed to say any of them out loud unless you are actually praying, and Y--H is always scanned with the eyes, never read aloud). Instead, you are supposed to say HaShem, which literally means 'The Name'. I guess the Christian religion adopted 'Gd' as their form of HaShem, and Islam adopted 'Allah'.

Although it is interesting to note that in the Jewish tradition you can only write 'HaShem' in full, even Gd cannot be written (the 'o' is often dropped).

I love religious linguistics :D
