The morning after the typhoon passed. A cloudless blue sky stretched endlessly. The sea, which had been wildly stormy yesterday, was now eerily calm, only the gentle sound of waves echoing softly.
On the beach, a little girl named Mitsuha and her dolphin stuffed animal, Irumin, were taking a walk.
――This Irumin isn't just any stuffed animal.

“Well, this is a statue of a dolphin—Irukichi—who crossed the sea long, long ago with a great monk. Even though he's a dolphin, everyone calls him the ‘Dolphin Saint’.”
Then, gently settling onto Mitsuha's shoulder, Ilmin began to speak quietly.
“Now then... this is the slightly mysterious, slightly bittersweet story of a monk named Kukai and the dolphin, Irukichi—”

台風一過の朝
台風一過の朝。
雲ひとつない青空がどこまでも広がっていました。
昨日の大荒れの海は嘘のように静まり返り、波の音だけが穏やかに響いています。
海辺では、小さな女の子・ミツハと、イルカのぬいぐるみ・イルミンが散歩していました。
――このイルミン、ただのぬいぐるみではありません。
なんと、ふわりと宙に浮かんで、しゃべることができるのです。
妄想や幻覚なんかじゃありません。お父さんやお母さんが見ても、ちゃんと浮かんでいて、ちゃんとお話しします。
灯台のそばにある、古びたイルカの銅像を見つめながら、ミツハがつぶやきました。
「ねぇイルミン。このイルカの像、なあに？」
前から気になっていたその像について、ミツハはようやく聞いてみたのです。
イルミンはくるりと宙を一回転してから、にっこり答えました。
「これはね、昔むかし、偉いお坊さんと一緒に海を渡ったイルカ――イル吉（イルきち）の像なんだよ。
イルカだけど、みんなから“イルカ聖人”って呼ばれているんだ」
そしてイルミンは、ふわりとミツハの肩に寄り添いながら、静かに語りはじめました。
「さてさて……これは、空海というお坊さんと、イルカのイル吉の、ちょっとふしぎで、ちょっと切ない物語――」
