Flag Fun

Two things happened today: Logan learned how to draw stars, and I learned the story of Betsy Ross is just made up! Well...not completely I guess, but apparantly we don't really know if she was actually asked to make the first American Flag!...but she was a great seamstress!

I had a hard time explaining to the boys what colonies are....I'm not a history buff...that's Adam's department.

Still...even without all the "facts" the boys enjoyed making their flags!! We are now officially ready for the 4th!

Naturally these boys are some of my most favorite people! Yet..how do I convery to them just how much a really do love them? How do I make sure that they know I love em' even when I'm upset or frustrated?

How do I let them know how much their simple joyous beings make me happy?

How do I convey to them just how great they are and that they can DO and BE ANYTHING?

Words just aren't enough....I am working every day on showing them....and some day...hopefully they'll understand....and then they'll know!

"The Plan"

Several months ago I devised a "summer plan." I was going to be ingenious and crafty. I planned weekly themes with activites, field trips, books, crafts, etc. I'm here to report that today...I finally did one of those activites and actually read one of those books. Well....we have been reading Peter Pan, but I actually read a "themed" book. And...I re-adjusted my summer plan. See..there's a few things happening we weren't really planning on for this summer....(more info to come later).

And so..that's how the cookie crumbles. Sometimes things don't always go as planned. Life rarely happens that way. And I am ok with that. I am learning every day to focus on the good and enjoy life's simple moments....even without clever crafts and seemlessly perfect story times!

Oh ya..and yes we still play video games and even watch cartoons!

P A R A D E

We love the mini-float parade....even with the sun blaring down on us!! I even made the boys new candy bags for this year...I know...mom of the year...right?

Logan's favorite part about parades, besides all the candy, is the bands. He LOVES them. He wants to play the TOM drum.

Nathan nearly flipped for the amazing Mystery Machine float! ...he really was happy....promise!

R O D E O

You would think that growing up in a small town would make Adam and I more "rodeo friendly." We've lived here over 6 years and I am sad to report that we have only been to the Round-Up Rodeo twice. And this was the first year we took the boys.

This is my baby sister Kallie and her new fiance Jayden. Once again my boys adore their new soon-to-be-uncle! Can't wait to have you in the family Jayden!!

Logan and his aunt Kenzie! She's the best! Now we just gotta find HER a man!!!

Some day we will adorn ourselves with belt buckles, wranglers, boots, and hats....maybe!

Going Home

The boys and I spent the last few days in my home town while Daddy-O was on a "work trip!" I always feel a little nostalgia when I visit home. I had so much fun growing up in such a small town. It has a certain "charm" and "slow-paced" way of life that is relaxing.

A Year Ago Today!

....The hallway was quiet. Not quite like I imagined. I guess I thought it would be like the scenes I've seen so many times on the t.v. drama series E.R. It wasn't. It was peaceful, and almost serene. my gurney was parked along a long glass window that overlooked the mountains to the East. As I peered out the window trying to calm my nerves, I saw the rays from the sun as they began to crest over the tops of the mountains. It was a wonderous sight. I remember wondering how I could notice such beauty as my life seemed to be in such turmoil and uneasiness. As I said a silent prayer for peace I remember feeling a great sense of calm, of acceptance, of purpose. I knew many guardian angels were surrounding me. They were watching over me. They were guiding my surgeons hands. They were with me the long nights in the CICU. I knew I wasn't alone. I heard chatter as the team of Dr's were "scrubbing in". I remember thinking how I hoped everything had been properly sanitized. Such a strange thought. My Anesthesiologist introduced himself. I asked him if he was giving me the "magic elixir." That's the last thing I remember about that hallway.

My surgery took just over 6 hours. I was on the bypass machine for about 1 1/2 hours. I thought maybe I'd at least have some kind of cool dream...but nothing.

As I slowly came to I heard someone mention they were able to pull the breathing tube before I was awake, and 99% of the time that isn't possible. I again whispered a silent prayer. It seems silly now that the only thing I was worried about my surgery, was waking up with a breathing tube down my throat. I soon realized that there were many other things that should have consumed my worries. I don't remember the first time I opened my eyes. Maybe I didn't for a while. The next 48 hours in the CICU were challenging. I received a sponge bath to remove the idodine that covered my entire body. It was comfortable and relaxing.

That first night was long. I was told I could ask for more pain meds every hour, but was frustrated because I couldn't see the clock without my glasses. I was allowed ice chips, but each time the nurse came in to check my vitals she moved my tray just far enough so that I couldn't reach it on my own. I didn't try to move much that first night.

The next morning I had to get up and sit in a chair. My body was not my own. I felt disconnected and wretched with pain as I got out of bed. I managed to sit in the chair for nearly an hour that morning. It was miserable. I felt almost as if I were in and out of consciousness. I didn't want to move. The thought of standing back up to get back in bed made my head spin. Adam and my mother showed up while I was still sitting up...I'm sure I looked like death...I certainly felt like it!

My days in the hospital were spent walking, resting, breathing in the negative sperometer, trying to gag down food, dozing in and out of consciousness, and praying. I received a blessing from Adam and my cousin...which I don't recall. I remember one instance my aunt and cousins came to visit. I had taken my oxygen off earlier that day to eat and forgotten to put it back on again. I think I must have blacked out a few times, cause I don't remember any of the conversation. When the nurse finally came back in my oxygen was only 52. She made me promise I wouldn't take it off again..not even to eat. And then there was the first time they made me get on the scale. I soon learned that part of the reason I felt so crapy was that I had gained 25lbs of fluid from all the iv's!!

I had a lot of apprehension about going home just 5 days after my surgery. I was nervous to say the least. It took all the strength I could muster just to make it up the stairs to my bedroom. As I fell back into the recliner, I vowed I would never get up again! The strong diuretics made me break my promise.

Adam helped me up and to the bathroom all day long. I took walks around the kitchen island because that was all the strength I had. I couldn't sleep in bed, because it was too painful. Adam did his best to wash my hair for me. Recovery was long and hard.

I've learned several life changing things from this experience. The first....I can do it again....maybe only because I know I will have to in about 10 years. Second....I'm stronger than I even imagined. Our Heavenly Father really does give us the strength we need to overcome obstacles and trials. He knows what we can bare. He knows what will challenge us and make us stronger, better people. He hears us...every time we pray.

A year ago today my life changed....but only for the better.

1st Grader No More

I remember Logan starting pre-school like it was yesterday. I remember feeling completely "alone" in my house without him. I remember worrying about him during Kindergarten. How on earth would he ever figure out how to go to the bathroom by himself? I remember crying his last day of kindergarten as I spoke with a teacher who had a heart of gold (it takes a special woman to wrestle that many 5-year-olds every day)! I thought this day would bring tears, but it didn't. I only felt a small sense of relief that the school year was over. I felt worry about how I would keep the little gears in their heads working all summer. I felt so much gratitude for such a magnificent school that my boys are able to attend. Magnificent...seems like a silly word, but I can't think of any other way to describe it. If there were ever a place I would rather have my children be then in my own home...it would be this school.

Posing for a last day picture!

Logan's teacher this year was truly an angel! Nathan loved her too, after spending so much time in her classroom! We love you Mrs. Soderstrom!

Logan was so thrilled to receive so many awards on the last day of school. Mrs. Soderstrom awarded him the "Bravery" award. He started out being so shy, and has grown so much over this past year. Way to buddy! We are so proud of you!!

He also received a Math Award, the Principals Trustees award, a Presidential physical fitness award, and a special reding award for completing all of the 1st grade reading books. Since he was new to the school she also had him read all the Kindergarten books!

Last Day of Pre-School

The jury is still out on which day of school I like best...the first...or the last?

Nathan's last week of pre-school was filled with a trip to the zoo, and a field trip to Texas RoadHouse. What could be better then anatromical dinosaurs followed by coloring on the floor of a restaurant and throwing peanut shells everywhere?...you're right....nothing!

Nathan has enjoyed pre-school this year, and I have watched him grow and improve in so many ways. He is a delight to have around and has such a happy disposition! I mean...just look at this face!!

He is a good little preformer too! His graduation was filled with many favorite songs!

We are so proud of you Nathan! What a great big kid you are turning in to!!

He was so pleased with his #1 medal, treat, hat, and balloon! Thank you Mrs. Lindley!

One of Nathan's best facial expressions!

He was quite impressed with the water-squirting dinosaurs at Hogle Zoo!

The T-Rex was a favorite!

I think this was supposed to take the place of the Zebras?
