Melissa Ferrick concert! Pussy manifesto!

So tonight we braved the icy sidewalks to go see Melissa Ferrick play the Pearl Street Ballroom. The verdict: it was good, but nowhere near as good as when she played there last year with Erin McKeown, which was totally the best show ever.

This time the opener was Bitch, who tried to be cool and edgy with political songs and spoken word pieces, with her bass guitar and violin and ukulele. Alas, she wasn't really very talented. Her last song, which Melissa came out and drummed on (I didn't know she played the drums) was apparently titled "Pussy Manifesto," in which she danced about extolling the virtues of pussy while making the crowd chant "Manifest this, motherfucker." Um. Jen says I looked so upset. I just wasn't really expecting that.

Melissa's set was pretty good. The downside was that she and her band played every single song from her new album, which I've only listened to a couple times. The songs were certainly better live, and they weren't bad songs or anything, but they basically all sound like versions of existing songs -- like, oh, here's "Everything I Need" written again. (Speaking of which, she never played "Everything I Need." Pout. It is Our Song, you know.)

The songs she played not from the new album were as follows: Freedom, Burn This Guitar, This Is Love, Will You Be The One, Moses (which, as she pointed out, is a Patty Griffin cover), and Anything Anywhere. Plus an actually really really excitingly good new song called "Better Run." And of course she ended with Drive (featuring, mmm, several extremely salacious hand gestures) and Welcome to My Life. Plus she was hot.

Still, I'm glad I went, even if the crowd was full of extremely drunk people who did things like push their way to the front to take Melissa's water bottle when the show was over (WTF?), and people who nearly kicked me more than once while screaming "I love vagina." Also I think Melissa should play more of her older songs.

(By the way, I use this icon because "feel the daylight" is a line from Drive. Which is the best lesbian sex song ever.)

They have a whole bunch of older Disney stuff, too -- I think Lysimache wants to make me watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Yeah, the "go to Shi'ar space" issues (1, 2, 5, 7), while Brisson was doing the ones with story on Earth with the Beak family. Although I think they co-wrote #1. They've got a "New Mutants by…

He's done more than one NM issue; I don't know anything about his plans other than that.

I think Hickman's not going to be writing any more New Mutants, that it was just him doing that one story in the first arc... That's what I've seen said anyway. Not 100% if that's correct.

    But…
