Dove Evolution
This is an incredible short film with an even more incredible message. Ryan got me started on the "Dove:Real Beauty" kick a while back (after he saw the Superbowl commercial, I think). Anyway, we both feel very strongly about this campaign. We want our girls to know that true beauty comes from within. We are learning how to foster and encourage their self-images. It is inevitable that they will be influenced by peers and the media. However, I do know for a statistical fact (and from experience) that little girls who turn into women care more about what their Daddies think of them than anything else. That's why we have to start building them up now... so when the world begins to tear them down, they'll (and we'll) be ready.

Things I never thought would come out of my mouth...
until kids:
"Don't lick the carpet. You'll get fuzz on your tongue!"
"Peanut butter does not belong on the bottom of your feet."
"When I was a little girl, there was a thing called an "Encyclopedia."
"Do my toes taste good?"
"Don't drink the fish water!"
"Your nose is not the place for popcorn."
"How come you can spell "perpendicular" but you can't remember to flush?!"
"Get your crown out of the fireplace."
"Who in the world filled the bathroom sink with Rice Crispies?"
"Please stop licking the baby."
"Why are there books floating in the bathtub?"
"Scissors are not for cutting jello."
"Cell phones do not belong in the potty."
"Do not kiss me right after you ate that booger!"

Moms for Modesty

Moms for Modesty Mission Statement
~As a Mom for Modesty I believe in common-sense modesty for girls and young women.
~I believe in refraining from sexualizing our girls and young women.
~I believe that it is unwise and unfair to taunt boys and young men by permitting my daughter(s) to dress in an immodest manner.
~I believe that true beauty comes from within and I strive to teach my daughter(s) this truth.
~I will loyally shop at retailers that provide girls' and young womens clothing that is modest, affordable and stylish.
So, if you are a mom of girl(s) and you agree with these things, you too could post this icon on your blog. Who knows where this will lead. Maybe it will show some of the retailers that we're sick of the immodesty in the girls' clothing department. Also, if you're a mother of boys, you might want to support this too. Let's face it, the way that our daughters dress affects your sons, too.
This is a post just to say I take my role as a mother of daughters very seriously, with much thought and consideration, especially before I buy them something - like Bratz dolls (uggg!) and inappropriate clothing. I have found clothes shopping for my girls to be difficult. I knew before I had them that it was going to be hard to shop for them when they get to be teenagers. I never imagined that it would be this hard to shop for them at the toddler and pre-school years. So, I was happy to see this Moms for Modesty post at Everyday Mommy.
And let me make something clear: I LOVE for my daughters to have clothes that are stylish and fun and trendy. A girl doesn't have to dress like Laura Ingalls Wilder to be modest... but, on the other hand, she doesn't have to dress like a hoochy-mama, either. There are cute things out there - believe me, my checkbook knows, but you have to weed through the Daisy Dukes and "Flirty" tees in order to find them!
I've been learning in the last few months that vendors, PR firms and the like pay attention to blogs, particularly mommy-blogs. We buy stuff, and they know it. If we can get the word out that we're tired of seeing size 3T shorts with "Juicy" emblazoned across the tush then maybe, just maybe, they'll listen. The point is, we want those retailers to see how many moms feel this way. Even if you don't have a blog, even if you're the mother of only boys, even if you're not a mom yet, even if you're a grandmother--we ALL have a stake in this. And while your comments of agreement are certainly welcome here, it is most important that you register your "I agree" over at Jules' post (link above), since that's where the button (on my sidebar) will be linked back to. Head over there and register your agreement. Jules' goal is 100 "signatures", but I suspect we can blow that out of the water.

My Little Girl(s)

Gotta hold on easy as I let you go
Gonna tell you how much I love you though you think you already know
I remember I thought you looked like an angel wrapped in pink so soft and warm
You’ve had me wrapped around your finger since the day you were born
You're a beautiful baby from the outside in
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again
Go on take on this old world but to me you know you will always be
My little girl
When you were in trouble that crooked little smile would melt my heart of stone
Now look at you I’ve turned around and you’ve almost grown
Sometimes your asleep I whisper I love you in the moonlight at your door
As I walk away I hear you say “Daddy love you more”
You're a beautiful baby from the outside in
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again
Go on take on this old world but to me you know you will always be
My little girl
Someday some boy will come and ask me for your hand
But I won’t say yes to him unless I know He’s the half that makes you whole
He has a poets soul
And the heart of a mans man
I know he’ll say that he’s in love, but between you and me
He won’t be good enough
You're a beautiful baby from the outside in
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again
Go on take on this old world but to me you know you will always be
My little girl

Hi
I don't even know where to begin to update you on what's been going on. It has been crazy-busy 'round here! Finally things are slowing. The main highlights are as follows...
* Delaney lost her 2, top front teeth. Maddy knocked them loose and she just ripped 'em out! Tooth fairy left her a note, 5 bucks, and lots of fairy dust all over her bed.
* Sophia finally got a tooth. One little snaggle-tooth on the bottom;)
* No tooth news for Madelyn, except now she thinks hers are falling out any day.
* I got my hair cut short again.
* I lost 7 pounds - probably has something to do with being too busy to eat and having a baby still sucking calories out of me constantly.
* I've been working like a mad-woman and Ryan has been taking on the role of Mr. Mom like a champ. That's gonna make me miss him way more than normal when he leaves me Friday for A MONTH! Please pray for my sanity!
* Sophia was sick this past weekend with 102-103.5 degree fevers constantly for 3 days. Dr. Carter sent her to the hospital for every kind of test known to man yesterday (except spinal tap - I put my foot down on that one) and with all the poking and prodding all they could come up with is "virus". It's no fun having a sad, sad sick baby:(
* Delaney's doing awesome in school. She's loving her gifted classes and isn't even phased by the fact that she's doing ALGEBRA and putting together presentations on PowerPoint. She just entered and art contest. I'll let you know how that goes. Oh - and she's taking violin. Her school offers it for free.
* Madelyn is loving her school, too. She surprises me everyday with something new that she learned. Today she said the "Pledge of Allegiance". We were so proud. She can recognize all her letters, numbers, colors, and shapes, and is even sounding most of her letters out. Her favorite part of the day is "snack". That's my girl. Ha!
* Ryan's still looking for a job once this Navy gig is over. He has several interesting leads, so that's promising.
* Sophie's latest milestone...well, she's been sitting unassisted since 5 months and is trying really hard to crawl. I just want her to roll from her back to her stomach first;)
* We're getting really excited about Disney World! 68 days and counting!
Okay, so that's the quick, shortened, and condensed version of what's been happening at the Dick Household. I'll post more later, but right now all I really wanna do is GO TO BED!
Love to all! Enjoy the pics...
