This has definitely been the last time his partners had forced him to do the weekend -shopping after he had given a lecture about computer criminology at the local university! "The supermarket lies on your route", Cody had shouted at him and handed him his car keys. "Enough is enough", Murray chided silently. What did his partners really think about him? In their eyes, he was a better maid - ha, a maid with an academic title. After all Cody and Nick were kind of pretentious! Murray stumbled up the gangway. From the salon of the Riptide, he heard loud voices. There was no doubt, his partners were arguing violently. In the past few days, these two hotspurs didn’t miss a chance of dueling verbally! Must be the weather, perhaps an increased output of hormone, the computer specialist thought by himself. "Hey you, would anyone be so kind to open the door for me..." he had barely finished the sentence when the door was pulled open with impact and Nick stormed out inflamed with rage. "Nick, where do you run to...without jacket?" The thin man shouted after his friend; but Ryder had already slammed the safety door and disappeared in the turmoil of the harbor. That was a typical Nick Ryder - leave me alone performance. Murray wagged his head and set the shopping bags on the floor: he peered cautiously into the interior. If Nick was like this, he assumed that Cody would not be in high spirits as well. Indeed, Bozinsky was hardly able to duck his head, when a flower vase-by the way - a gift of his sister Melba- rattled aloud, bursting into a thousand pieces on the wall next to his head! "This damned bastard!" Allen snorted totally out of himself. "Cody, calm down please! What’s wrong?" "You want to know, what is the trouble? I tell you what’s going on...he dared to approach Claudia! That is the matter! My best friend, sorry my former best friend pinched my girlfriend- I can’t believe it!" Cody got nuts over it. Murray took a deep breath before he answered: "I am absolutely sure Nick would never do something like that! I would put my hand into the fire for him!" he tried to reduce the tension. "How touching! This ideal of a gentleman would never do something like that - so please tell me how I am supposed to understand Claudia’s call two hours ago? She jilted me with the argument that Nick is the more interesting one and...well they both harmonized physically very well!" Murray swallowed hard:" Do you think they had...?" "I am absolutely sure that they did it and he did not even deny it! But his barefaced statement that Claudia seduced HIM, that crowns all! Where is he gone? I follow him and break his damned Italian nose!" Bozinsky shock his head in astonishment: "Cody there is something wrong with this affair. All those years, nobody of you ever got in the others way - with regard to women! Perhaps he told you the truth and Claudia really seduced him. You should consider this possibility as well before prejudging him! What will happen next, how will you go on?" "I threw him out...I told him that I don’t want him on my boat any longer and that is exactly how I meant it Murray!" Allen replied bitterly. "Don’t you think you jumped at a wrong conclusion? That you overreacted a little bit?" Murray asked obviously affected. "Not in the slightest! I don’t want to live together with a rat. That’s a matter of fact!" Bozinsky helplessly shrugged his shoulders and remembered the shopping bags and started to put them away. He needed some distraction and he tried to find an explanation - better a solution for this crisis. He was deep in his thoughts and did not recognize that his dark haired partner suddenly stood behind him: "Hey Boz! Do you know where I can find my toilet bag?" Ryder asked and Bozinsky nearly fell unconscious! "Oh my God Nick! You scared the pants off me!" Murray explained. "Your toilet bag is still in my room. Wait a minute I’ll take it for you...why do you need it now?" Nick was in the bedroom and randomly stuffed socks, shoes, clothes, his baseball- racket and a miniature of the Mimi into his army bag. He put the toilet bag with the necessaries on top. "Nick, please try and talk to him! You have to eliminate that rumor, as soon as possible! Just tell him what happened. Both of you are grown up men you should be able to find a solution!" Murray tried again. "It’s okay Boz! I think it had to come that way...look, we are living together on a very tiny space for years. We work together day by day and even in our spare time, we cling to another like leeches! Believe me that had to be expected! Cody and I, we said things that should had better been unsaid. By the way, the Riptide belongs to him and he is the one who decides who stays or not!" With these words Ryder threw his bag over his shoulder and left, without a further word, his former home. Murray ran after him:"But Nick, where do you go? Where do you want to sleep tonight?" he asked quite worried. "Listen Mur! I am a grown up boy!" Ryder answered with a smile. "I will surely find a comfortable place for the night and tonight I can sleep in the Mimi!" "Where will you take a shower, where will you shave, where eat?" Murray insisted. "Hey, I won’t go to the dogs and I surely won’t die from hunger or play down! I promise! I come back again and take the rest of my stuff. You know where you can find me-just in case!" Ryder answered, gave Bozinsky a huge and disappeared. "Is he finally gone?" Allen immediately asked. "Why do you ask me this stupid question, he directly passed you by!" Murray said aggrieved. "Not really? I didn’t notice it!" Allen lied. "Well I have a lot to do with the preparations for my next lecture- we see us tomorrow. Good night Cody!" "Yes good night Boz!" ********** Nick sat on two overlapped mattresses in the hold of his beloved Mimi. It was very cold and windy. It was raining cats and dogs and the temperature was unusually low for the beginning of November. Nick reached for the only blanket on board- it was from old army stocks - probably as old as the Mimi and as fluffy as a wire brush! "If it rains, it pours!" Ryder groaned and pulled a supplementary sweater and his winter jacket over. "It won’t hurt" he thought by himself. Lying on his makeshift bed, he tried to fade out the pictures of the last annoying hours. He had blown it! That was for sure. Cody had every right to act like that! In his position...NO, he would deal with it tomorrow. Well rested and with the necessary distance! Very early in the morning, Nick woke up, teeth chattering. It was unpleasantly damp and cold. He felt weirdly stiff and shattered. "It was not the best of ideas to spend the night in the Mimi!" he said with a sigh. He boiled some water on a small camping stove and poured it over the instant coffee waiting in the only mug onboard. How he hated instant coffee! But it would warm him up a little! After the second cup, he decided to safe his tormented stomach from further pain. It was nearly six o’ clock and there was a snack bar on the harbor that opened that early. If he was lucky, he could have a hot shower there! He threw the army bag over his shoulder and made his way through the wind and heavy rain to the bar and to his big relief he saw Peggy, a warmhearted fifty two old woman fiddle around. "Good Morning, Peggy!" Nick wanted to greet her, but a sudden fit of coughing foiled his attempt. "Hello Nick, are you on a journey?" she asked him with a look at his bag. "Well something like that", he admitted sheepishly. "I spent the night in the Mimi and now I’m frozen to the bones! Do you think I could use your personnel shower - for once?" he asked with his brightest smile. "Of course you can! Straight on, second door on the left! Do you feel like having breakfast?" she asked him. "That would be great! Peggy, you are the number one!" "I know that but you could do me the favor and tell it the boys in my age", she added with a grin. "Hurry up before the mob turns up!" The hot water was a relief to Nick’s stiff body and twenty minutes later he sat in front of a steaming cup of coffee and a plate with ham and eggs. "Did I mention that you are the best?" He asked with a mischievous grin. "Not in the last twenty minutes! But now I want to know what’s wrong! Don’t tell me you have trouble at home!" Nick took a sip of his coffee and answered: "To be true, I totally screw up! It was not my intention, believe me! I was kind of trapped. I hurt Cody very much - and now I have to live with the consequences!" "Oh, that does not sound very good", the waitress regretted. "But Cody is a nice guy - it will all work out!" "Peggy, I hope it with all my heart! But at the moment it is better if we keep out of our ways!" "Nick, you cannot spend another night in your helicopter, I guess there is no heater unit in it, right?" "No, the Mimi isn’t that up-to-date. But the old Lady is flying damned good and that’s all that matters to me! "The pilot said with a proud smile. "Nick, I am seriously worried! The weather is awful and the forecast announced rising wind and heavy rainfall together with lousy low temperatures! You should try and find a warm place, as soon as possible Peggy demanded in a resolute voice. "It goes on top of my ..." Nick tried, but this time a violent sneezing stopped his speech..., "sorry of my list of priorities, I swear!" He wheezed. "You are in a pretty mess! I think you are falling ill! Promise me to take care of it!" "Yes Madam!" In secrete Nick amused himself about Peggy’s mothering instinct: Cody could not have it done any better! He paid for his breakfast, embraced the waitress gratefully and headed for the Mimi. It was kind of funny, but the cold, wet air afflicted him and he has to stop two times to recover his breath. "What a funny weather", he murmured. Back at the Mimi he started to clean up the interior and arranged it more comfortable. He wanted to feel a little at home; wistfully he had to think of his friends and the Riptide - it was surely a nice place to defy this awful weather! ********** "Cody, the day after tomorrow will be the fifth of November!" Murray started his initiative accusingly. "OK Murray! What do you want to tell me?" the blond asked clearly uninterested and that got Murray’s shirt out. "It is Nick’s birthday!" He said and elevated his voice. "It cannot be true that you forgot it!" "Well, as far as I can remember, his birthday takes place every year at the fifth of November Murray! I think there won’t be a change this year - or will it be cancelled in case of betrayers?" Allen teased. "So, you just want to ignore him. I think with a friend like you, he doesn’t need enemies! He can’t stay in the Mimi forever! Have you spend a thought on this fact - by the way, it is lousy cold outside and the Mimi has no heater!" "Well, Ryder isn’t made of salt, he will survive it! Besides, believe it or not, he is responsible for this misery of his own!" Allen replied. "Cody, how can you be so stubborn, so rigorous? Six month ago, he saved your life, you must never forget that!" "Ah, I see! It was when he jumped on a driving car without thinking about the consequences! Well, I vaguely remember that day..." "Yes, but he did it to save YOU from the worst! How can you be so... so...ungrateful Cody?" "No, no Murray, don’t treat me like that!" Cody shouted. "We nursed and served him three long weeks, I remember that well! I think that’s grateful enough!" "Oh my God Cody, you are beyond all bearings in your egocentricity!" Murray said sick with disappointment. "Listen to me! He had no right to go after my girlfriend, no matter what he did to save my life! You should not forget it!" Allen stormed out of the salon. In the meantime Bozinsky prepared some sandwiches and filled hot tea into a pot and stow it all away into a bag. "I am dropping in on Nick", he said into Cody’s direction but the blond behaved as if he had not seen him. </lj-cut>
