About My Story-Book

This journal is primarily for slash - especially Riptide slash. This means m/m, homosexual relationships. If you do not wish to read about this, or are not over the age of consent in your country, please go no further. Otherwise, welcome to my story-book.

You can read my stories here. Your feedback is welcome and valued.

And come on over to pier56, our shiny Riptide squee-community. Come and find out all about the pretties, join the love in the land where we don't have to make the slash up because it is right there in the script. And on the screen. I'm not kidding.

I also post on other things as the mood takes me, especially about books I'm reading. If any of my interests also interest you, please feel free to friend me. I will almost certainly friend you back.

Love, Tinx

It's canon...

Fic!

I am writing again yay!

So I have even set myself a wee 2021 goal like so:

10985 / 30000 words. 37% done!

Which is quite fun.

2020: I wrote under 5k (of posted fic) which is possibly my lowest ever. And there wasn't much unposted... maybe another 2k if that. So let's see if this keeps me motivated :)

Zee words

It interests me that when I am writing for one of my, if you were, peripheral fandoms, I can easily write 1000+ words in a sitting, I don't find I need to be in the mood, I don't find I need do more than, perhaps, peruse a chapter of two of canon or perhaps check a reference or quote (Wimseyfic in particular, I'll often check exact phrasings in canon).

Yet, although most days I write at least some Riptide, I will sit down to write and procrastinate; I will take two hours of writing time and write nothing until the last ten minutes; I will stare at the last sentence I wrote; I will agonise over plot.

(I rarely check Riptide canon while writing, I generally watch eps separately to writing. Perhaps I may know this canon rather well...)

It wasn't always thus, or perhaps I should say it isn't always thus, as I occasionally have bursts of exceptional output, like that one time I wrote a 12k fic in a single day (in about 18 hours, to be fair, and I was, I believe, laid up with a broken leg at the time. It was Sole Survivor for anyone interested) primarily, I think, because there was just no place I could stop and leave the boys in limbo...

I don't think it's a crafting thing, I mean, I don't think it's that I'm putting more effort in, exactly, as I always try to get voices/settings etc right, and I'm possibly pickier about Wimsey, Heyer, etc as the worlds are that much more different than this one. And in theory I should not need to strive to get my boys' voices right (or at least what I think is right) as I appear to have had a wee bit of practice.

Admittedly, I rarely have an outline, so "where to from here" is a thing, and sometimes I must wait for those ratbags to get out of bed and tell me what happened next (a curse, I assure you). But then I don't outline in my other fandoms either, and I rarely have much more idea when I begin, of where I'll end.

Who else finds differences between how they write in different fandoms?

This'll be fun :)

I've signed up. Anyone else know any Kiwi fandoms (definition is very loose: my understanding is that Lord of the Rings counts) well enough to play? The mod tells me crossovers between Kiwi fandoms and non-Kiwi fandoms are welcome.

Writing meme

Swiped from valis2 and more recently from little_tristan :)

1. How often do you write and how do you feel about your output?

I write every day, pretty much. Sometimes more, sometimes less - a good day I get a thousand words plus done, a bad day, mebbe 200 words. Or RL eats me and I get nothing done for a week which sucks like a great big hoover.

I love what I write, usually to the point I don't care if anyone else does or not. This, imho, is the definition of happiness :)

2. Where does your inspiration come from? Where do you get your ideas?

Breathing, pretty much :)

3. What are the first things you write? Dialog? Sex? Something else?

I start at the beginning and write til the end, usually. Almost every story I've written is written linearly.

4. How have you improved this past six months/year?

I think I've got more concise. Dearest oddmonster with her sharp beta teeth has helped me a lot. When I look back at my old old notebooks - well, I've improved like a thousand percent since then, but that's 15+ years back.

5. Why do you write?

Have you SEEN the boys? There are only 56 episodes, which is kind of like a crime in and of itself. Plus, they left out all the best bits. I'm called, people. Called.

And now for the rest... go me!Collapse )

Ficlet game whee!

Me, oddmonster and romankate have had the best time.

Turns out, we all love the great comm older_not_dead (currently running Promptathon 04) and they've got some GREAT *any fandom any pairing* prompts this time around.

So we picked a prompt - Ghosts - a fandom each (can anyone guess which one I baggsed? SO fast poor odd couldn't even beat me to it?) and off we went...

And today, we are *delighted* to bring you the results.

Drumroll please...

Silver on the Tree by romankate, Merlin - Here

Come Talk to Me by oddmonster, Miami Vice - Here

Ghosts by ME, Riptide - Here

You know you slash too much when...

you accidentally attach the latest fic-in-progress instead of a file labelled Intercessions from Cathedral to an email intended for a) your mother and b) the church.

Well then.

Wasn't THAT lucky I didn't push send?

Cousin Teresa takes out Caesar...

House:
We bought a house! Whee! Unconditional, finance approved, only have to sign all the documents and we're all go.

Possession on 24 July.

That's quite exciting, really :D

Rambling:
(No, I don't have a cousin called Teresa, nor anything called Caesar. However, I *do* have an earworm *vbg*. which for some reason I keep typing as earwork. Go me. Earworm? can one have a prose-earworm? In fact, is Cousin Teresa prose, poetry or lyric? Apparently, I am loony tonight :D

F-list, if you love me, join me in my lunacy. Who can complete the couplet of which I speak? Has anyone else been beset by Cousin Teresa during the wee sma's?)

Writing:
In between being beset by earworms and Cousin Teresa and housebuying, I am also writing, and will shortly bring you Four Days Off: Four, only several months after its mates :) And then I was thinking about a crossover, probably an AU crossover.

Crossover/AU:
If I wrote a Riptide cross, who would you like to see me cross with? Some of you know I'm kicking around an idea for a Harry Potter crossover, which is really a Nick/Cody & Murray story in the Harry Potter (books 1-4, cos I get snarly about some of the stuff that happens in the later ones) Universe, but I fear that might be of epic proportions, so I might not start that with a house-move coming up.

Toss me some prompts, my dears. I shall be eternally grateful!
mab_browne's post alerted me to a kerfuffle going on (I think it's in the SG-1 fandom, in which I'm no more than a part-time lurker). I wandered over to have a look, and I'm utterly dumbfounded and horrified.

And I just felt that I wanted to state, very loudly and clearly, my opinion (note: no use of the word "humble". There is nothing humble about it. I will scream this loudly and repeatedly to anyone who makes the mistake of listening!) on the writing of fanfiction. (Just in case anyone cares what tinx_r thinks, hee!)

1. Your vision of your characters is your vision, and NO-ONE gets to tell you differently. Your vision cannot be "wrong".

2. The language you choose to express your vision is yours and yours alone, and NO-ONE gets to tell you that your words are "wrong".

3. If you like your story, then it's a good story.

4. Your story is a piece of art your put your time and effort into. Be proud of it. It's worth it.

5. Making fun of other people's stories or writing is always wrong. Let those of us who are perfect all raise our hands. (HINT: If you put your hand up, consider increasing your medication.)

6. As a beta, take time to get on board with the author's vision of the characters. Make suggestions by all means, but if the author sees the characters differently to you, respect that and listen to their vision. You might discover something you had never even considered! If you can't share the author's vision, respectfully decline to beta.

7. Other people's different perspectives do not invalidate your own vision, and trying to force others to think the same way you do is insulting and ridiculous beyond measure.

None of this means you shouldn't give beta advice, or take concrit - but don't ever let someone tell you you are *wrong*. You're not.

HUGE HUGE HUGS to my friendly, inclusive and open-minded fandom. I always knew you guys were the best: things like this make me realize it all the more.

Happy meme Day 6

My writing unblocked! Whee! Managed 1400 words last night, admittedly starting at 11pm, and with oddmonster peering over my shoulder and making encouraging noises.

However, since they're the first words I've managed in 10 WHOLE DAYS (dear heavens), this is cause for celebration of the highest order. They may not even suck :)

Have a to-do list the size of the universe (flamebyrd: Coming!; mcsheplovers: Day 4 also coming!) and work still sucks, but still, I suppose it keeps me off the streets! Found 2 new possible houses to buy yesterday, too, so we shall see how that pans out.

And just a great big squee for pier56! Riptide started out as such a tiny fandom here on LJ, and now, every morning I wake up, knowing I'll be greeted with brand new shiny Riptide icons, banners or fic*, along with wonderful new friends to make! *squee*!

* - uh, it's about time I contributed something in that regard...

Ooh ooh ooh!

I'm having a *CRAP* day at work today, only slightly mitigated by my special secret surprise from oddmonster **SMOOCH** so I am haunting LJ, refreshing my f-list in search of porn things to cheer me up :)

And anyway, I found this meme over at rileyc's LJ:

Pick one word from each pair that you think describes me the best and comment with your choices. Then copy this and post it in your own journal to see how your friends view you.

Now that's a cute meme, I liked it, and if you wanna comment as it says above, I'd love to hear from you. BUT! These word pairs! My God *BOUNCE* I want to write fic for each of the word pairs! Boys arguing about which descriptor suits them (or each other...) best! Fic which illustrates one half of the word-pair or the other! Linked drabbles for both!

Now, if only work would eff off out of my life, I'd get on with doing that....

What is she on? word pairs under the cut...Collapse )

Sooper seekrit messij for catyah: I haven't forgotten that fic you prompted me for at New Years btw. And, although you SAID Nick/Cody, I'm guessing that if I told you I have an OT3 bunny for it, that wouldn't upset you any...? *hugs*

Cute comm and new writing challenge!

Dearest f-list, here is a little pimp for a cute comm called otps_galore. It's a space to talk about your OTPs, how much you love them, that sort of thing.

And, now it's having a weekly drabble challenge! *bounce*

Anyhow, I'm going to be contributing (no prizes for guessing fandom) and, also: I am thinking of trying a few drabbles for Richard/Melrose. (Richard Jury Mysteries).

*bouncebouncebounce*

Anyhow, the current drabble prompt at otps_galore is "Sweet", which I love, and I hope lots of others want to come play too.

Riptide Fic and Writing Update

First things first: My latest Riptide fic.

Title: New Year's Eve
Rating/Genre: PG, slash
Word Count: 2500
Pairing: Nick/Cody
Summary: It's New Years, and Murray's got a proposal...

Find it here: New Year's Eve

For any of my friends wondering where the fic went: I haven't stopped writing. I'm just not posting it to my LJ anymore. Me and oddmonster have a new fic journal (if you want to browse the archives, check out riptide_asylum). Everything new I write you can find on pier56.

From time to time (every couple of months? something like that?) I might post a summary here of what's new, fic-wise. And the Story Page is still being updated: soon it will be a complete listing of all the u's me and oddmonster are playing in.

But if you're mainly here for the fic, I suggest watching pier56. And if you want to defriend me, I'll totally understand!

For those of you who stick around, I'll still be squeeing about my boys on here. I'll still be posting about books and authors, and less often about the occasional movie.

And when I get my phone/camera/critter plugged in, I'll still be posting scenery pics too!
I just found this cute, hot and delightful Jim/Blair ficlet (well, drabble) from romankate, and it's so pretty I suggest y'all pop on over for a look! (It's PG, btw)

And, like I said, writers_choice rocks. First of all, it was the very first comm I wrote a ficlet for, and in fact the very first weekly challenge I responded to in any comm, so I've always held it in affection.

Second of all, it's a great place to find delightful, tasty short fic (just like romankate's Show-Off).

And third, and the main reason I'm here rabbiting on about it, is that I post there any time I have anything for one of it's prompts and.... *fanfare*... For 2008, I'm 10th in their top ten contributors; and Riptide's 10th in their top ten fandoms! WHOO!

A new claim... heh

Well, because I don't have enough writing to do right now, I have claimed at 10_snuggles . No prizes for guessing fandom or pairing, *vbg*.

My table is:

1.) Blankets
2.) Water Gun
3.) Snowfall Cold Comfort 24/2
4.) Umbrella
5.) FestivalO Christmas Tree 26/12
6.) Beaches Four Days Off: Two 14/12
7.) Star Gazing Four Days Off: One 13/12
8.) Chocolate A Cure for the Common Cold 16/2/09
9.) Late Nights New Year's Eve 12/12
10.) Gift Arachnocampa Luminosa 17/12

Following 3 are extra or swap-in for any of the above:

11.) Project Four Days Off: Three 30/12
12.) Movie Movie Night 26/3/09
13.) A First Cutscene for Echoes

So currently on the go I have 2 remaining for 10_hurt_comfort , 2 for 7_suns, 9 for 7rainbowprompts ... and 10 for 10_snuggles.

I'm off to Mum and Dad's tonight so I'll only be around sporadically until Monday. I *do* have a new fic nearly ready to post tho, and I'll try to get it up tonight before I go.

In other news, I got the Hauraki Gulf pics off my new phone/camera last night! Whoo! It was real hard, I had to plug in the cable and choose data transfer. Go me. So i'll likely post those during the weekend (safe topic for fiddling with at parents' place, hee).

Smallfandomfest is open! *bounce*

Yay! And there are HEAPS of Riptide prompts!

So many tasty ones... I'm having trouble deciding what to do first! (Or rather, second... I already wrote one. *VBG*)

*flails and runs in small circles squeeing*

And I can't WAIT to read the other fen's contributions, or to see more beautiful icons... *bouncebouncebounce*

I hope everyone's gonna play! smallfandomfest is such fun! I'm aiming to do three (at least) and win a button this time... anyone else playing too?

(For anyone who doesn't watch pier56, I've posted the Riptide prompts there, and links to the smallfandomfest rules and the claiming post, for ease of perusal.)

Riptide Poll on pier56

Hey girls, we're running a poll on pier56 to see whether Riptide writers are interested in Riptide-specific writing challenges.

You can find the poll here.

Really keen to get input from all readers and writers of Riptide fic!

Love and hugs, Tinx

Writing ramble and input sought...

I just figured out today, I need to write more porn. It's a cross to bear.

Hee! Anyway, what I mean is, I've been getting bogged in angst. And every time I try to escape, I drown in fluff.

I claimed at 10_hurt_comfort, which is great, but when I have a new claim I get kinda fixated on it. And I've started thinking that claim might have been a mistake for me.  I mean, I can write angst. And some of it is even good (well, I think it is). But, the two angsty pieces I've written that I liked best, I wrote by mistake. I'd started out writing schmoop, and they disagreed. Firmly. And when I followed them to where they wanted to be, they were good.

When I sit down to write angst or h/c? I write *crap*. Well, a lot of the time. Or, the angst disappears and I turn out with fluff. *sigh*

Anyhow, I was struggling with a fic last night (as you do) and suddenly realised I haven't written any porn for about a week. Or maybe it was even longer? And that time, I didn't set out to write porn, it occurred almost as an afterthought, in the midst of angst.

I feel some cathartic porn is in order. I hope to produce a PWP (or at least a "porn is the reason for its existence") fic tonight or tomorrow. And I am making a large note to myself to write self-indulgent porn more often. Angst is all very well in its way. I love to read it. When it's flowing, I love to write it.

But alas! When it causes ME more angst than is happening on the page, things are not going well. At all.

So: Porn. The writer's friend? Anyone else think that?

Also: darling f-list of the multi-fandoms! How do you find you get on writing for multiple fandoms? Do you find that switching between them helps or hinders the creative processes?

Speak to me on this! I am thinking perhaps I should belt out a few more Richard Jury's. Or give some thought to kicking off the Starsky and Hutch writing I keep muttering about.  I wonder if it might keep me a little fresher for Riptide? Because I'm wondering if the whole total-immersion thing may also have to do with why I am getting bogged in angst....

Or maybe reading outside the fandom is sufficient for freshness? I got somewhat unblocked, and realised porn is the way forward, last night after reading an incredibly hot piece of Starsky and Hutch, which as soon as I find again I'll come rec for you all. Alas for internet connections dying at 1am....

Tell me your thoughts, wise ones! Please *bambi eyes*

Loves f-list. Much Love.
OMG this was so much fun. Come play, peoples!

Title: A View from the Horizon
Fandom: Riptide
Pairing: Nick Ryder/Cody Allen
Theme set: Alpha for 1sentence
Rating: NC17
Genre: Pre-Slash, Slash
Warning[s]: Creative use of punctuation.
Disclaimer: Not mine. No money being made. No copyright infringement intended.
Notes: Not a story. Fifty sentences, depicting events which begin in Vietnam and fit with what's happened in my Horizons series where Nick and Cody get together shortly after the end of Echoes. I have done some creative filling in of / guessing about canon blanks in this. These sentences are in order of the events depicted by them, not the prompts. If I've made a mistake/taken liberties with canon order, please excuse me.

Speaking American...? And Sex and the City

ETA: Problem solved! Thanks torra *smooch*

Is "frigging" an American term? Or British? Or both?

If I say "That movie's frigging awful!" does that mean, to everyone here, "That movie's fucking awful!" - which is what it means here?

Appreciated :)

Oh, and I saw Sex and The City last night. It was pretty ok. Just like an episode, really. I found that I always knew what was gonna happen in the next ten minutes, but I quite like relying on Sex and the City like that... Kind of like comfort food for the brain, you come out smiling but you haven't had a decent meal :)

The two friends I went with were verr-rry upset about the ending, though. Which I thought was kind of silly, because it's been going to be EXACTLY like that since episode 1. At least in my world.

My 1sentence claim was just accepted!!!!!!

They're ALIVE!

And YAY!

(Not that it makes any difference, I was writing 'em anyhow!)

ETA : 11 to go
Well, the most fun I've had with mine, anyhow! *VBG*

ETA: rileyc is playing with me! She's doing mixed fandoms which is a GREAT idea. Yay her! And the community woke up! Claim accepted! *bounce*

I discovered this comm the other day : 1sentence. The idea is, you write one sentence about your pairing for each of 50 prompts in a set.

I tried a claim, but then found that it seems like the community's abandoned... there have been no claims accepted for over a month. However, as the mod post suggested, I'd already started writing my sentences without waiting to be accepted; and by the time I realised the community was inactive I was having SO MUCH FUN. Far too much fun to stop!

So anyway, I'm going ahead and finishing this, and I'm going to post it here because OMG I might be addicted to doing this! Anyone else wanna play?

I'm writing on this table here (Nick/Cody - that'll be a big surprise to everyone I'm sure):

I'm getting there - 30% (I thought it was half, but nope, just counted up). ETA: 75% YAY ME

Come play with the threesome or a Murray pairing someone? Hell, come play with Jim and Blair or Chris and Vin! Why not Sam and Dean? Let's play!

And seraphina_snapeand katikat, I'm thinking Melrose/Richard next!

*bounce*

ETA: Oh and I've just claimed and been accepted for Nick/Cody in 10settings which I am very excited about, if you want to know more go to my "keeping me honest" post here.

Poetry

A post with all my poetry on. I have posted it for myself rather than because I expect anyone to read it, but in case you want to, it's not locked. Go ahead, if you like :)

My Story-Book Story Page

New here and interested in Riptide? Friend me, and come and join pier56. Can't wait to meet you!

My name is Tinx, and I've been in love with Nick and Cody's love story since the first airing of the Pilot, in 1984.

I am always writing Riptide. I ship Nick/Cody, but I have written other pairings/the threesome either for a good reason, (LOL - writing slash - do you need a reason? :D), for a prompt or by request.

Occasionally I write other things, too. There are, after all, more beautiful boys in the world, and from time to time, I look up from Nick & Cody long enough to notice them :)

All stories are NC17 unless stated otherwise. You should not be reading this journal unless you are of legal age in your country.

Riptide Stories

You can find more Riptide stories on riptide_asylum, a shared journal where oddmonster and I post all the fic we've written in our shared universes. You can also find all my stories on AO3.
