1. How often do you write and how do you feel about your output?
I write every day, pretty much. Sometimes more, sometimes less - a good day I get a thousand words plus done, a bad day, mebbe 200 words. Or RL eats me and I get nothing done for a week which sucks like a great big hoover.
I love what I write, usually to the point I don't care if anyone else does or not. This, imho, is the definition of happiness :)
2. Where does your inspiration come from? Where do you get your ideas?
Breathing, pretty much :)
3. What are the first things you write? Dialog? Sex? Something else?
I start at the beginning and write til the end, usually. Almost every story I've written is written linearly.
4. How have you improved this past six months/year?
I think I've got more concise. Dearestoddmonster with her sharp beta teeth has helped me a lot. When I look back at my old old notebooks - well, I've improved like a thousand percent since then, but that's 15+ years back.
5. Why do you write?
Have you SEEN the boys? There are only 56 episodes, which is kind of like a crime in and of itself. Plus, they left out all the best bits. I'm called, people. Called.

Because evidently I have too much time on my hands (I've told you all I'm moving, right? *headdesk* I am insane) and I have four thousand other things to do as well, plus of course the fact that I couldn't stop writing fanfic if someone had a GUN to my head... I have decided the time has come to undertake a Project.
This Project is, as I am sure you will agree, of Immense Import and Scientific Worthiness. In fact, I'm kind of surprised we have all survived so long without this project being undertaken. I expect to get several grants.
I have decided to undergo the great hardship of watching our canon again, very closely, and cataloging outfits. No more wondering: When did Cody wear the grey jeans? How about the cream sweatshirt of heinousness? And where oh where can I find the amazing diamond sweater of legend?**
(I'll need quite a bit of fic to sustain me through this hardship, people... *bambi eyes*)
I propose a database, with a search function :D In the short term, however, I think I'll make do with picspam.
*Yes, The Princess Bride has no bearing on this post, and neither do Rodents (except the time Murray got a pet rat. That went really well. I'll tell you all about that one, very soon! You know Cody hates rats, right?), but I can't help how my brain works.
**NOTE despite what this looks like, I will also be cataloging Nick's and Murray's wardrobe. It's just that Cody's is so much morestartling up-to-the-minute. *grin*

My writing unblocked! Whee! Managed 1400 words last night, admittedly starting at 11pm, and with oddmonster peering over my shoulder and making encouraging noises.
However, since they're the first words I've managed in 10 WHOLE DAYS (dear heavens), this is cause for celebration of the highest order. They may not even suck :)
Have a to-do list the size of the universe (flamebyrd: Coming!; mcsheplovers: Day 4 also coming!) and work still sucks, but still, I suppose it keeps me off the streets! Found 2 new possible houses to buy yesterday, too, so we shall see how that pans out.
And just a great big squee forpier56! Riptide started out as such a tiny fandom here on LJ, and now, every morning I wake up, knowing I'll be greeted with brand new shiny Riptide icons, banners or fic*, along with wonderful new friends to make! *squee*!

And it made me wonder: how important is new hotness/character updates in keeping you in a fandom?
Me? I'm deeply entrenched (no-one die of surprise when I mention this) in Riptide, and have been for 25 years, despite the fact the canon's been closed since '86, and there were only three seasons to begin with. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that the only viewing of my boys I get is what I have already seen.
Obviously, for me, the current-ness of a show, and whether it's still being produced has no effect on my fannishness.
How about my dear friends? How important is it, to you, that there are new things to see in your fandom? If you're fannish about a show and it's cancelled, does that effect your feelings about it? If you become interested in a closed-canon fandom, do you stay interested once you've seen all the shows?
Or is it fandom-dependent, perhaps? Some fandoms you love forever, others you fangirl while they're showing then lose interest?
The other thing is, I'm kinda pleased about my closed canon (*strokes*). TPTB can't hand me nasty surprises this way, kill or worse, marry off my boys, or otherwise disrupt my happy fangirling. I'm also the kind of girl who skips to the end to check it out, half-way through a book.
I would love to hear what you guys think about this?

I'm late with my planting, but finally have the veg in! (Anyone who hasn't caught up: I live in New Zealand, it's late spring here right now.) Beans, spinach, silver beet, lettuce, leeks and celery.
I was planning to put in capsicums (bell peppers) too, but the garden centre had only one variety - a purple (!) one, that I'd never seen before, so I gave them a miss. I might find some yellows or reds later in the year I guess, and last year I didn't put them in until after Christmas, and they went just fine.
I just hope I've got them all in good spots: I'm still not quite sorted with where the light falls in the new place, and I'm hoping I have everything suitably exposed to sun and protected from wind.
In other news, we had an election down here too, on Saturday, and we also have a government change. We, however, have swung to the right. It was expected, because the previous government had been in 3 terms (nearly unprecedented in our history) so it will remain to be seen how that affects many things.
Our previous government passed the Civil Union Act (which allows gay marriage, in effect, even though, as yet, it is not called "marriage". However, straight couples are also able to take a civil union, and civil unions have the same legal standing as marriage. It's a whole other post, the positives and negatives of this, not going there now.) and made many other progressive changes.
We've also had our Green party as a small part of the coalition government for the last 6 years, and that's now going to change. Hopefully, it wont affect our environmental progress negatively.
So. We will see what things may change in the next three years. Welcome to the Central Right, fellow kiwis.
(This has been a party political broadcast :P For anyone interested, I voted for the exiting, incumbent government.)
Also? I PROMISE to picspam Harmony and Grits tomorrow. Sorry for the long gap between picspams, chaps!

For the final fix on the broken tooth I've been whinging about intermittently the last couple of weeks... They're fitting the crown tomorrow, so I can go back to chewing on the left side of my mouth again, with any luck. Hopefully it won't hurt as much as fitting the temporary one did *crosses fingers*

You guys might remember a few weeks ago when I had a wee rant regarding my flatmate being loony, and her loony friends, A and A's boyfriend?
Well. There are developments.
And, because I'm talking and therefore there must be Riptide:
The Fannish Friday 5 is Five characters that replaced departing characters, and whether you considered each a gain or a loss.
Well, I don't have 5 and they're not all replacements, but it made me think straight away of Lt Parisi and Lt Quinlan. NOTE: Fen who haven't watched Requiem for Icarus, this is a SPOILER.

I was going to picspam Oil Bets Are Off tonight but unfortunately LJ would not cooperate (or maybe it was my laptop?) and I couldn't get the pics uploaded. Grrrrr.
Suffice for now: Dear GOD the (Nick/Cody) slash. Also, an incredibly cool Murray ep. LOVE Murray in this episode. I'll get the caps and yap up as soon as I can!

On the RL front, I had dinner tonight with one of my current bosses and my ex-boss. When current boss was out of the room, ex-boss asked when I was coming back to work for him. "There's a job going, you know."
"Oh!" I said. "I didn't know you had a vacancy."
"No!" says ex-boss. "I don't. But I have a role for you. I will always make a role for you."
So I am feeling heart-warmed about that. Especially since current-bosses having been sucking exceedingly the last couple of weeks, which I mentioned to them and explained needed to stop. So we shall see how that goes. Having said that, ex-boss has been known also to suck, but still, it's a great feeling for a company to want you like that.

I've been at the dentist today re the tooth I broke while on holiday in Queenstown. He did two fillings today (ick) and tomorrow I get a temporary crown. Back again on 6 October for the full noise.
Suffice for now: Dear GOD the (Nick/Cody) slash. Also, an incredibly cool Murray ep. LOVE Murray in this episode. I'll get the caps and yap up as soon as I can!

I am off tomorrow to Gay Ski Week, in Queenstown (New Zealand, where it's winter at the moment, for any of my f-list who don't yet know I hail from the Antipodes :))
(I'm a total beginner skier - snowboarder actually - so I'll only spend a couple of the days on the snow. The rest of the time I'm planning on hiking, and also one day we'll do a wine tour, as it's premier wine country down there)
And so, dearest f-list, I will be deprived of you all for 8 days. I'm not taking my laptop, and it's doubtful whether I'll be online at all during that time. I am somewhat terrified at the thought of being without the internet, and worse, without Riptide, for 8 whole days. (I am not sure how I will cope. It's almost an unprecedented occurrence.) I am however taking notebooks. Writing will still occur.
I will miss you all *desperately*, but with any luck I'll come home to new fic... *bambi eyes* *VBG*
I'll hopefully get some beautiful pics down there - Queenstown is spectacular country - which I'll bring back to share with you all. The only problem is my camera's being dodgy *sigh* But I'm going with 5 boys so you'd imagine we'll get some decent pics between us.

I just figured out today, I need to write more porn. It's a cross to bear.
Hee! Anyway, what I mean is, I've been getting bogged in angst. And every time I try to escape, I drown in fluff.
I claimed at10_hurt_comfort, which is great, but when I have a new claim I get kinda fixated on it. And I've started thinking that claim might have been a mistake for me. I mean, I can write angst. And some of it is even good (well, I think it is). But, the two angsty pieces I've written that I liked best, I wrote by mistake. I'd started out writing schmoop, and they disagreed. Firmly. And when I followed them to where they wanted to be, they were good.
When I sit down to write angst or h/c? I write *crap*. Well, a lot of the time. Or, the angst disappears and I turn out with fluff. *sigh*
Anyhow, I was struggling with a fic last night (as you do) and suddenly realised I haven't written any porn for about a week. Or maybe it was even longer? And that time, I didn't set out to write porn, it occurred almost as an afterthought, in the midst of angst.
I feel some cathartic porn is in order. I hope to produce a PWP (or at least a "porn is the reason for its existence") fic tonight or tomorrow. And I am making a large note to myself to write self-indulgent porn more often. Angst is all very well in its way. I love to read it. When it's flowing, I love to write it.
But alas! When it causes ME more angst than is happening on the page, things are not going well. At all.
So: Porn. The writer's friend? Anyone else think that?
Also: darling f-list of the multi-fandoms! How do you find you get on writing for multiple fandoms? Do you find that switching between them helps or hinders the creative processes?
Speak to me on this! I am thinking perhaps I should belt out a few more Richard Jury's. Or give some thought to kicking off the Starsky and Hutch writing I keep muttering about. I wonder if it might keep me a little fresher for Riptide? Because I'm wondering if the whole total-immersion thing may also have to do with why I am getting bogged in angst....
Or maybe reading outside the fandom is sufficient for freshness? I got somewhat unblocked, and realised porn is the way forward, last night after reading an incredibly hot piece of Starsky and Hutch, which as soon as I find again I'll come rec for you all. Alas for internet connections dying at 1am....

Yesterday, my darlingjanedavittwrote Tony/Tim!! (NCIS). YAY! And, of course, like everything Jane writes it's OMG so perfect and OMG SO GOOD. I can't even BEGIN to say how excited I am that Jane has written my favourite pairing ever (just excepting that one that everyone here has heard me mention from time to time).

OK, 2 weeks ago, I would have said: SG1? Yeah, Jack/Daniel, I'm into that, now that you mention it. Wow, I haven't thought about that for ages though...
AND NOW: I'm hooked. Utterly hooked. (Not to the exclusion of Riptide - let's not be ridiculous or anything - but other than that - HOOKED).

So Dukes of Hazzard and Starsky & Hutch play one after the other on The Box (a mixed reruns channel) at lunchtime on Saturdays *VBG* Ramblings ensue... which also may involve Riptide seeing as how I'm talking and that's just what happens...
- Daisy Duke is HOT. And smart. And HOT. OMG. The boys are very pretty, and Bo's arms also are to die for, but for me? Daisy. *woof*
- And I'm really liking Roscoe. That would have been such a cool role. He's GREAT. *Notices enthusiasm for cops* Hmmm I seem to be developing an enthusiasm for the police in my fandoms... even ones like Quinlan (although I think I always did like him, and I always did like Joanna.... now Roscoe, and of course Enos is cute...)
- Interesting, the Duke boys are tearing around on dirt bikes and actually wearing helmets. That's terribly safety-conscious of them.
- Daisy is so cute
- Cuff 'em and stuff 'em - one of my favourite lines in TV
- Even if I hated the Dukes, I'd watch for the theme song. I love it.
Just as an aside, why don't the Riptide boys have a cute little saying like me and thee? They should. I'm more in love with Starsky and Hutch every week, by the way. I have to go and buy the DVDs the minute I finish Riptide. I feel there is a strong likelihood of fic, too. So many fandoms... so little time... LOL and I only have 3 (ish), albeit I wouldn't be surprised if my f-list was only aware of one of them *g*
- Starsky and Hutch is rated PG. Presumably for man-cuddling.
- S&H theme song is not my favourite thing.
- I didn't used to think Starsky was cute but I've changed my mind. He's actually very, very pretty. He's a bit like the Fonz :)
- Hutch's eyes are amazing.
- And they're so married. See, I usually put Nick and Cody together post-series. They're very married, but there's lots of posing and UST too. These two - they've been together for about 20 years, I think. They're just gorgeous.
- Fortunately this is a lovely slashy episode. I'm still feeling a bit tender after Double your Pleasure. Mind you, I don't think there's such a thing as a non-slashy S&H episode... I haven't seen one, at any rate... But if it had been Starsky vs Hutch playing today, I might have cried. A lot.
- Even being as married as they are, and as slashy, Starsky and Hutch stay a lot further apart in the general way of things than Nick and Cody do. They are quite comfortable being up to 6 feet apart! For WHOLE scenes and everything. They don't HAVE to touch 4 times per scene. That would NEVER work for Nick and Cody. I guess it's the whole dating vs already married thing. They don't have to touch each other to assert ownership, it's a given :D
- That meal you invited me to at your place last night... They always say stuff like that. I guess it's cover if the guys at the station see them going home together EVERY NIGHT.
- Starsky to Hutch: "Sit down and choose whatever your little blond heart desires." FUCK ME!!!!!!!!!! I mean, really. What would you think?
- They always arrive too late. Find a body, guy escaped out the window... there's a pattern. I think it's on purpose so Hutch can do his hurt-puppy sad eyes.
- God, they're pretty. *woof* I didn't realise... what have I been missing... *sigh* But they wear too many clothes :( Jeans and jackets really can't compete with skimpy shorts and no shirts...
- It strikes me the picture quality's better than Riptide. Or has survived the years better. *sob*

Did you miss me?!? (Hee!) I missed you all a lot.
Conference was very stressful and frantic, but it went really well and we had some great speakers. Jared Blumenfeld, from San Francisco, was one of the main speakers and he told us all about the environmental initiatives the City of San Francisco has undertaken. Also we had some great leadership speakers. But mainly, I ran round like a headless chicken and got stressed a lot :) Oh, and ate far too much. Including lots of chocolate. Most of it surrounded by raspberry licorice. (Which is the food of the gods. Seriously.)

They allow threesomes or anything). 1fandom - 50 prompts (10 tables to choose from) and write one sentence about anything to do with your fandom. So, you can do sentence 1 about, for example, Cody, 2 about Nick, 3 about the Roboz, 4 about Cody/Nick, 5 about Murray etc.... Oh yeah, I claimed Riptide. I understand that will be a great shock and surprise to people on my f-list who have probably not noticed that I'm a Riptide fan... ;p *VBG*Once again, I think everyone should come and play!
rileyc and catyah gave it a go last time. Seriously, this is one of the most fun things I've ever written :DMy table is below under the cut, and the idea I have for the fic-like thing which will result is "unrequited" (likely, of course, to become requited, or very close to, by sentence 50 - you've met me before *wink*). I'm warning you now, it's very unlikely to be a beautiful seamless fic like
catyah's - more likely to be another series of connected ideas which do tell a story, like my View from the Horizon.

catyah... I mentioned a fic with a plot. Well, it has about 4000 words, and lots and lots and lots of smut... but plot - not so much. Anyway, it's nearly done! I accidentally wrote another ficlet yesterday, too... but in its current state it doesn't add anything anywhere anyhow... so it's parked for now. Work is insane this week, we've got a conference in a fortnight which will be mental...
My DVDs aren't here yet... Maybe the postman hates me.
I want to write some more Richard/Melrose too... although I just re-read The Old Contemptibles and, while I LOVE Melrose in that, Martha annoys me. Hmmm. I guess that's why I don't re-read them very often - she gets a bit rapt in her own prose I think (Martha-ish phrase *g*). They read well the first time while you're wondering what happens.
I need more time. Or maybe a clone.
And yesterday I met lots and lots of people who love Red Dwarf! YAY! Some of them were already on my f-list and I didn't know!

I was thinking with fondness about dear Trav last night, and it occurred to me that our much-loved Mr Allen might be playing wanna-be McGee.
First of all, Cody joined up to go to Vietnam for no very clear reasons - get dumped, why don't I go to war? hmmm. But McGee was a Korea vet. So maybe Cody decided when he got dumped that he wanted to be McGee? Anyway, supporting evidence:
1. Cody drawls. Now it seems to me that in the early 70s, there is no way he would have been speaking as lazily as he does at an Ivy League school? In which case he must've cultivated the drawl.
2. When he decided to get a boat, he got a cabin cruiser. BUT, I believe *searches memory* that his boat background was sailing? ie yacht? And all the yachties I know would die before they got any kind of boat that didn't have a sail. (The Busted Flush was a houseboat).
3. McGee's boat, The Busted Flush, could easily be considered unlucky - McGee won it in a poker game. He changed her name to The Busted Flush. Cody changed his boat's name to the Riptide.
4. Bahia Mar was probably too far from Cody's mom, but he is somewhere with a warm climate.
5. Cody really really seems to want to project the whole animal sexuality/sensuality of McGee, he tries to be real smooth with the girls... unfortunately a) he's too uptight and b) he's gay so it's not really working for him. McGee cant help but get laid, Cody cant get past 2nd base. But if he was modelling his beach bum/ladykiller act on someone, it could easily have been McGee.
6. We know the PI idea was Cody's. He must've got it from somewhere. Reading John D MacDonald? We know Nick calls it a "Hardy Boys" gig, so he, anyway, doesn't really relate it to their MP work. Cody says there is more money in being a PI. Now Trav makes lots of money, and takes his retirement in installments. There is no other fictional PI I know who talks about dollars as a good reason for doing it, and I can't think of anything Cody would've seen in Redondo to suggest to him he could make a fortune that way. And remember, Cody's from money. If he's talking about making $$, he's probably thinking fairly big.
7. And McGee's sidekick/best friend Meyer is an extremely bright economist who has given up the world to live on a houseboat. Murray?
8. McGee's pale-blue Rolls Royce pickup is called Miss Agnes. I seem to recall a canonical suggestion that Mimi's name and color were at least partly Cody's idea....
So.... does Cody want to be McGee, or do the writers want him to be? Which is it? Or am I just mental?
I may write an essay on this one of these days *grin*

Think it is lucky I've written all my fic longhand up til now - typing it out is proving an excellent betaing exercise (I thought I was only writing for me! YAY for others!)... hopefully wont be too long delayed...
Don't know about everyone else but there are stories I cringe at when I go back to... especially my first one... but at the same time I love them.
Major issue is *which one first*... I've got one beautiful one I can easily rewrite into canonical universe... might do that one first. It's very long but I can make a section into a short as a starter :)
DESPERATE for episodes to arrive on DVD so I can hear the boys again... they have been in my head for too long, I'm not sure how true their voices are when they speak to me these days... wont post the fic till i've checked. Although reading all this beautiful fic you guys have here is certainly reassuring me I have not strayed too far.
Speaking of which, the 3some stuff is really interesting (and hot!). I never saw that, have never gone there, I was always about Nick/Cody. Not that I dont think Murray is hot, because I do... just that for me, I never saw room in what Nick and Cody have for anyone else, even someone they care about like Murray. Interesting perspective, once again, cant wait for DVDs to see the fit for myself. Will dwell on this further, may try going there myself in the future :D
And why the hell didn't I write shorts instead of novella length??????? Actually I know the answer, it's because I never want any of them to end *grin*
LOL I'm pretending editing and typing all this is a hardship and I am SO HAPPY!
