Episode 3: The Young Man Who Doesn’t Take Photos

On the old road at night,
the outlines of the road were clearer than during the day.

There were few streetlights,
and because of that,
the areas with light stood out sharply.

The young man
pulled the car over to the shoulder
and left the engine running for a while.

“This place…
I feel like I’ve been here before.

He wasn’t sure.
But
he felt a sense of nostalgia he couldn’t explain.

When he opened the door,
a bell rang.

“Welcome.”

Behind the counter stood
the owner of Iruka.

The young man blinked for just a moment,
then sat down without saying another word.

Lately,
he had grown tired of being surprised.

“What’ll you have?”

“…Coffee and
whatever you recommend.”

Iltie nodded and
headed toward the kitchen.

On the young man’s lap lay
a DSLR camera.

But
it remained turned off.

Pancakes and
crispy bacon.

The sweetness and saltiness
were strangely just right.

The young man
continued eating in silence.

“Aren’t you going to take any pictures?”

Suddenly,
Iltie asked.

The young man
stopped his fork.

“…Not right now,
thanks.”

“I see.”

There was no further
questioning.

The young man
had set out on a journey to take photographs.

To be precise,
to find the reason why he could no longer take them.

Every time he pressed the shutter,
it felt as though the world were lying.

It was too beautiful,
too perfect,
and there was no trace of human warmth anywhere.

“I feel like
I shouldn’t take a picture of this place,”

The young man
said, as if to himself.

Irtie
replied while wiping the frying pan.

“That’s fine.
You don’t have to force yourself to take one.”

“…If I don’t take one,
it feels like it’s meaningless.”

“Even if you don’t take one,
there are things that will pass on.”

The young man
didn’t immediately understand
the meaning of those words.

A note with the bill
was placed on the counter.

You don’t have to pay for your own share.
Please pay for the next person’s.

The young man
stared at it for a moment.

He opened his wallet
and checked inside.

There was more left
than he had expected.

The young man
left a little extra money.

“If the next person
has a camera…
please buy them
a cup of coffee.”

Irtie
smiled softly.

“I can’t promise anything,
but I’ll keep it in mind.”

Just before leaving the shop.

The young man
turned around.

Not through the viewfinder,
but with his own eyes.

Iltie,
the counter,
the light,
and the quiet atmosphere.

—Ah.

It’s precisely because I’m not taking a picture
that I can remember it.

Back in the car,
the moment he picked up the camera.

The power
wouldn’t turn on.

No error message appeared.
It was just
silent.

Strangely,
the young man didn’t panic.

A few days later.

He began
writing not photographs,
but words.

The scent of the wind.
The sound of plates.
The warmth of sweet pancakes.

The scenes that didn’t remain in the camera
were passed on to someone else
as words.

That night.

Irtie
added a single line to the ledger.

――The price of a cup of coffee. In words.

The reason,
she did not write.

A debt of gratitude,
even if it changes form,
will surely be passed on.

Dolphin Café is,
tonight as well,
quietly keeping its lights on.
