Pencils

One of my biggest pet peeves is listening to parents complain about buying school supplies for their children at back to school time.  I know it is expensive, but this is for your child's education. The following are actual things I have heard parents say while I've been doing my own back to school shopping.

I can't believe the teacher wants a specific kind of pencil!
What will the teacher do if we don't buy that kind of pencil? Say our kid can't write!
I can't believe how many pencils this teacher thinks our child needs!
I don't know why they need so many glue sticks (or other items on the list). At our house, one glue stick lasts for  more than a year.
If the teachers taught the students to care for materials they wouldn't need me to buy so many.
Do these teachers think we are made out of money?
Did you see how many things are on this list?
Really, they only want crayola brand? Of course they do. The store brand should be good enough.
I bet they won't even use all these folders. Probably the teacher is just taking all of these things home for her own use.
What do they need ziplock bags for???
Three boxes of tissues? Really? I'll just send tissues with my child each day.

I always wonder what the children think when they hear their parent talking like this.
Does the child think teachers are stupid to ask for supplies?
Does the child think their own education isn't worth buying the items on the list?
Does the child think that their parent thinks the teacher and school are stupid?
Does the child think their parent doesn't think they are worth the $100 - or whatever the final total is for school supplies?

I'm sure these parents have no idea that the message they are sending their child is:
Teachers/schools are stupid
My child's education isn't worth the more expensive pencils.

It is hard for me to be quiet when I hear parents complaining.  I sometimes have to leave the back to school department and come back later.

Trust me I buy lots of school supplies too.
I bought for my girls.
I buy school supplies for my granddaughters - it is always a fun shopping trip.
I buy supplies for my classroom too.

Teachers ask for brand name items because they usually are better.  Saving fifty cents or whatever the difference is between the price for the item requested and the cheaper brand is just not worth it.  Have you ever tried coloring with those off brand crayons? Some of them stink too.
Check out the lovely cheaper pencils in the picture above.  The leads break and often they don't sharpen in our pencil sharpeners.  I've had students who have to throw the pencil in the trash because the lead continually breaks or the pencil only sharpens on one side.  I'm always glad I have some pencils to share.

Yes, I know how much the supplies cost.
Your child's education is so important to me that I will spend my money to make sure your child is successful.
My wish is that every child would have parents who value education and wanted to make sure their child was prepared to do their best and had the best supplies for their job of learning.

Arts Integration Class

Denise, Bobbi, and I are taking an Arts Integration class.  We had four days of classes in June, one in October, and our final class will be in January.  For our October class, we had to plan and teach a 30 minute mini-workshop which is part of our final lesson project.

The final project is turning out to be a unit that integrates language arts and visual art.
Before the activity:
Heart map for writing – students cut out a heart and divide it into many sections.  In each section students write things they know and love.
100 topics list – at the beginning of the year, students created a list of 100 topics they have personal experience with and could use as a topic for writing.
Adjective study – students would have worked with adjectives and descriptive details.
Bio – Poems – students have created a bio poem to describe themselves
Personal narrative – Students will create a personal narrative describing what makes them unique.

Activity: Three Self Portraits
1.    How you see yourself
2.    Self-portrait using a hand mirror.
3.    Portrait filled in with descriptive words

My third graders have already done the Heart Map for writing, the 100 topics list, and an adjective study. We are working on the bio-poems. Next they will write their personal narrative and then we will do our self portraits.

Self Portrait With Words
Using a hand mirror, create a self-portrait
Using a list of descriptive adjectives that describe you, add details to your portrait using your individual adjectives.
For my mini-workshop, Denise and Bobbi made their list of adjectives to describe themselves, used  mirrors to create a self portrait, and then filled in their portraits with their adjectives.  They were awesome students!
I'm looking forward to doing this activity with my third graders in a few weeks.  In January, I will  present my portfolio of student created evidence of my lessons to the entire Arts Integration class.  Its been a fun class, but there is a lot of work too.  Taking a class with friends is always fun!

Sixty One

My birthday fell on Conference weekend this year.

Everyone came over on Sunday.  Izzy baked a gluten free angel food cake for my dessert.

Liz made a Greek Salad.

Sarah roasted veggies.

Gary made brown rice and teriyaki chicken.

It was a yummy meal!

The cake was good.

We had fruit to go with the cake too.

Izzy is getting so tall.

Not much longer and she will be taller than her Aunt Sarah.
It was a great weekend.  Friday dinner date with Gary, General Conference broadcast on Saturday and Sunday, all the kids over, and a yummy dinner.

Hands

Our theme the other night for YW was Hands.

The girls used their hands to create with play doh.

We talked about how our hands can help us work in many ways.

The next step was writing a letter to their their future self and one to be read in ten years by a young woman who is the age they are now.

Then the leaders gave the girls a hand massage and they polished each other's fingernails.

We listened to the song His Hands.
Hands to work, hands to write, hands to be relaxed, massaged, and polished.
Hands to be like His.

Renaissance Festival

Gary and I went to the Renn Fest again this year.

We enjoy going for the music, shopping, and people watching.

Sir Gregory of Carlton plays classical guitar.

Albannach was here from Scotland.

We heard them a few years ago and were glad we could go and listen to them again.

Its always fun just walking around and watching everyone.

We also listened to Stary Olsa, a Belarusian band.

They played a different style of bagpipe and lots of different wooden flutes.

Cu Dubh was appearing also.

We've seen them the last few years too.

Bagpipes and drums

Just wandering around

I always find the Dancing Glass Beadworks shop.

The little house where they sell the flower head wreaths is always so cute.
We will probably only make it one weekend this year.  It was great to not have my knee hurt as I walked around.  Last year was terrible.  Seven months post surgery and so glad I was able to have my knee replacement.

Mutual Night

The Mia Maids were busy working on Personal Progress.

The Laurels invited the Beehives to play Paint Twister.

Fun times!

The girls had a great time.

Izzy is enjoying being in Young Women now.

Family Photos

Jodie did an amazing job with our photos again this year.

We even got some good ones of Gary and I this time.

Love these granddaughters of ours!

We tried several locations at Gilbert Run State Park.
