The Last Week of 2021

It's been a quiet week around our house.  We have relaxed, read, visited with family, slept in, napped, watched several episodes of The Wheel of Time, made Chex Mix, snuggled grandchildren, and just enjoyed having some time off with each other. Ezra woke up from his nap while we visited and was happy to see us, especially Papa.
Ezra, just loves Papa.  All the grandchildren love Papa. I think they have good taste, I love Papa too!
We are going to have a quiet New Year's Eve tonight.
The Kissels treated us to dinner from Mezeh Mediterranean Grill. We had yummy bowls of deliciousness. Tonight we will watch another episode of The Wheel of Time and probably read a little. We will probably ring in the new year a little early, but you know, 'It's 12:00 somewhere!'
Happy New Year!

Mitchell Kissel Aina Family Christmas

We had our family Christmas on Sunday afternoon.

We had a great time.

We moved the dining table again so we could have more room for the kids to spread out.

The girls passed out the gifts.

Ezra wasn't sure what was going on

The girls staked out an area of their own and then we started unwrapping presents. The kids go first and then the adults.

Izzy and Ezra snuggling and napping. Unwrapping presents can be exhausting.

Adeline and Isla enjoyed watching the ice skaters.

Gary got me this beautiful nativity from Peru

These cute mugs will be cute when I do the next hot chocolate bar

The Kissels got me this book.  It's been on my wish list for a long time.  Hopefully Gary and I will be taking some of the daytrips and weekend excursions in this book.

The Ainas got me this great long heating pad.  Sarah had one that she got and I tried it on my achy knees one day and it was great.

The Ainas also updated my family photo frames in the family room.

I got this surprise in the mail from my sister. Gary and I met at Willard Library when I had a summer job, indexing old newspapers from the 1860s. Indexing in those days meant reading records on microfilm or microfiche and writing the information on index cards. Then alphabetizing the cards in file boxes. Those records were then printed in book format and now are accessible online. That summer job was life changing. Gary and I grew up in the same town, about ten miles from one another. We had been at several events at the same time, but didn’t meet until after we both graduated from college and I had a summer job indexing and he was translating old church records from German to English. Willard Library is where our story began.

Thanks Susie for the beautiful gift 💗

We had a lovely Christmas weekend.  Actually our whole Christmas season has been great.  Lots of fun family time, beautiful Christmas lights and music, special treats and hot chocolate, planning gifts for those we love, watching the excitement of my students and my grandchildren as the day grew closer, fun times with friends, sharing special Christmas stories and memories, and making new memories.
Remembering that the reason we celebrate is the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas

Christmas is different now that are children are grown up and on their own.  We are very lucky since both of our girls and their families live close, we can get together to celebrate a family Christmas complete with all the squeals and chaos of having children at Christmas.

We've had to figure out how to recreate our Christmas holiday time for two. We've had our Christmas Eve figured out for a few years now. Christmas day keeps evolving. As families grow and circumstances change the plans continue to change. Last year we had a Covid Quarantine Christmas day. Someone in Clay's office had tested positive & we were waiting on Clay's test results, Sarah was pregnant, Gary and I are older, there were no vaccines, etc. So we had a front porch Christmas gift exchange. I am grateful for the Ainas being willing to load up their girls and gifts and come over so we could see the granddaughters open their gifts.  I know we are so spoiled to have our girls so close and so willing to share holidays with us.
When we first married, we lived in Crete, Greece. We couldn't see family for the holidays.  We often opened our home and shared meals with other military families.  During our 42 years of marriage, I think we have been to Indiana (where our parents lived) for only about 5 Christmases. For our girls growing up as military dependent children, we were often overseas for holidays. We figured out how to make our holidays work every time we moved. Family traditions were important to establish. Christmas is very different in Greece, Texas, Japan, Germany, Hawaii, and Maryland. Every place we have lived, we tried to find something familiar and something unique to how holidays were celebrated.  We've taken bits and pieces of each place and then incorporated it into our family holiday celebrations.
Our holidays will continue to evolve as the grandchildren get older.

There were lots of presents under the tree. We didn't remember to keep our gifts to one another out, so we didn't open gifts on Christmas day.

Our traditional Christmas breakfast. My mom's Crumb Top Coffeecake.  We had this every Christmas morning when I was growing up and I have continued the tradition.  I make it with gluten free flour now so Gary can also have some.

We also have breakfast casserole with hash browns, sausage, cheese, and eggs.
Liz, Clay, and Izzy joined us for Christmas brunch.

In the late afternoon, we went over to the Ainas to see what the kids got for Christmas.  They were excited to see us and show us their gifts. The weather was nice and the girls were having fun playing outside.

Abby taking a break from playing outside.

Isla wanted me to take pictures with her gifts

She loves all her presents and loves showing them off

It is so fun to see her excitement

Ezra wants to be a big boy.  He can pull himself up and stand now. Not quite ready to walk yet, but it won't be long.

Such a sweet boy and so happy.

Gary and I have started Watching Wheel of Time. He has read the whole series and I have not, so he explains parts to me that I don't understand.

Date Night

We had a fun date night.

We made gluten free pretzel Rolo pecan turtles

All we need to change to make it gluten free is the pretzels.

We also made no bake cookies using gluten free oats. The regular oats don't have gluten in them but are often processed in the same factory and often on the same production line as wheat products. So to be safe from cross contamination, we use the gluten free oats.  It doesn't change the taste or texture at all.

Then we watched White Christmas

We watch it every year.

It was a perfect date night for us.

Aina Time

I stayed with Adeline, who was sick with a stomach bug, while Sarah took the other girls to the dentist.  Ezra tagged along to check out the dentist office since he gets a check up the next time the girls go in for a check up.

We watched some Barbie Dream House videos and I got her to eat part of a freeze pop. When she is sick, she doesn't like to eat. She will drink water and Gatorade though.

I was glad when she asked for some string cheese to eat.

When they got home, Ezra decided my phone was interesting. I turned on the camera and set it for selfie mode.  He saw himself!

He started making fun faces.

Here's his serious look.

Selfie with Grandma.

Isla wanted to join us for selfie time.
I'm happy to report that Adeline is feeling better now.

Book Club

We had our annual Christmas Book Club meeting and everyone was bringing a treat to share, so I decided to set up a hot chocolate and hot apple cider bar. I found some cute peppermint stick spoons on Amazon. I also had some cute pink and white marshmallows, caramel drops, Andes mint chocolate pieces, and caramel, sea salt caramel, and chocolate syrups too.

The table set up.

Turning the table and setting it in front of the slider to the deck gave us more room to move around and spread out too.

Ready and waiting for the book club ladies to arrive.

Since December is a crazy month, we used to skip book club for the month. Last year with the pandemic, we were doing zoom meetings so we each shared a favorite Christmas book. This year we decided to continue the tradition.  Each of us also brought a book for a white elephant book exchange.

Nola and Liz listening to a story being shared

Liz, Alecia, and Olivia listening.

Izzy came up to join us since Katie was home from college and joined us too.

Sarah C. reading her story, The Night Before Christmas. Jess and her sister rounded out our group for the night.  We had such a fun time sharing favorite Christmas stories, enjoying treats, and participating in the book exchange.
Here are the books from our book exchange:
The Rose Code by Katie Quinn
Dance of the Thieves by Mary E Pearson
One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus
Christmas Dessert Murder by Joann Fluke
This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
D=Crave by Tracy Wolff
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman

Next month we will be discussing The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I've already checked it out from the library.
