Who would have thought that such a conversation would take place in the middle of August over the breakfast table?
Lydia: Is Santa real?
Lana: No, he's not real. It's Mommy and Daddy.
Lydia: Mommy, is that true?
I am thinking in my head...when did Lana stop believing? she never asked us about it... well, okay, here goes...
Me: Well, I believe in the magic of Christmas and the joy that is spread from giving gifts. Of course we know the birth of our Savior is to be the biggest celebration of the season. But, no, Santa is not real. It is something fun and magical about Christmas for children. We will continue to follow our Santa traditions as a family and leave him cookies and milk and carrots for the reindeer.
Are you okay with knowing all that Lydia? I know you were starting to question things last year at Christmas.
Lydia: Yes, I'm fine with that news.
And then they were back to eating their cereal!! No tears, no broken hearts. They pretty much knew already. When I asked Lana when she figured it out, she said last year she just thought it through but didn't want to ruin it for Lydia.
So now we will still celebrate the spirit of Santa with the relief of their reactions to this news behind us!
