話し言葉において生じていた言語変化が，伝統的で保守的な書き言葉に反映されずに，後世の観察者の目に見えてこないという可能性は，文献学上，避けることのできないものである．例えば，ある語が，ある時代の書き言葉に反映されていないからといって，話し言葉として用いられていたかもしれないという可能性は否定できず，OED の初出年の扱い方に関する慎重論などは至る所で聞かれる．確かに大事な慎重論ではあるが，これをあまりに推し進めると，文献上に確認されない如何なることも，話し言葉ではあり得たかもしれないと提起できることになってしまう．また，関連する議論として，書き言葉上で突如として大きな変化が起こったように見える場合に，それは書き言葉の伝統の切り替えに起因する見かけの大変化にすぎず，対応する話し言葉では，あくまで変化が徐々に進行していたはずだという議論がある．
中英語＝クレオール語の仮説でも，この論法が最大限に利用されている．Poussa は，14世紀における Samuels の書き言葉の分類でいう Type II と Type III の突如の切り替えは，対応する話し言葉の急変化を示すものではないとし，書き言葉に現われない水面下の話し言葉においては，Knut 時代以来，クレオール化した中部方言の koiné が続いていたはずだと考えている．そして，Type III の突然の登場は，14世紀の相対的なフランス語の地位の下落と，英語の地位の向上に動機づけられた英語標準化の潮流を反映したものだろうと述べている．

似たような議論は，近年さかんに論じられるようになってきたケルト語の英語統語論に及ぼした影響についても聞かれる（例えば，[2011-03-17-1]の記事「#689. Northern Personal Pronoun Rule と英文法におけるケルト語の影響」を参照）．古英語の標準書き言葉，Late West-Saxon Schriftsprache の伝統に掻き消されてしまっているものの，古英語や中英語の話し言葉には相当のケルト語的な統語要素が含まれていたはずだ，という議論だ．英語がフランス語のくびきから解き放たれて復権した後期中英語以降に，ようやく話し言葉が書き言葉の上に忠実に反映されるようになり，すでにケルト語の影響で生じていた do-periphrasis や進行形が，文献上，初めて確認されるようになったのだ，と論じられる．
しかし，これらの議論は，文献学において写本研究や綴字研究で蓄積されてきた scribal error や show-through といった，図らずも話し言葉が透けて見えてしまうような書記上の事例を無視しているように思われる．写字生も人間である．書記に際して，完全に話し言葉を封印するということなどできず，所々で思わず話し言葉を露呈してしまうのが自然というものではないだろうか．
話し言葉が，相当程度，書き言葉の伝統に掻き消されているというのは事実だろう．書き言葉習慣の切り替えによって，大きな言語変化が起こったように見えるという事例も確かにあるだろう．しかし，書き言葉に見られないことでも話し言葉では起こっていたかもしれない，いや起こっていたに違いないと，積極的に提案してよい理由にはならない．一時期論争を呼んだ英語＝クレオール語の仮説と近年のケルト語影響説の間に似たような匂いを感じた次第である．

昨日の記事「#1237. 標準英語のイデオロギーと英語の標準化」 ([2012-09-15-1]) で参照した Milroy の論文で，Skeat の発言に端を発する "the myth of the Anglo-Norman scribe" が，近現代的な標準英語のイデオロギーを持ち込んで歴史英語を解釈した例として槍玉に挙げられている．
Skeat は，The Proverb of Alfred についての論文 ("The Proverbs of Alfred." Transactions of the Philological Society. 1897.) のなかで，写本に現われる奇妙な綴字は，古英語で書かれた exemplar を読み解けなかった写字生に帰せられるべきと論じた．そこまではよいのだが，Skeat はさらに，その写字生は英語を第1言語としないアングロ・ノルマン人だったのだろうと結論づけた．しかし，Milroy (21) の批判するように，"Unfamiliarity with an older writing system does not necessarily mean that the scribe could not speak English" である．
しかし，Skeat の校訂による Havelok the Dane を改訂した Sisam (Sisam, K. and Skeat, W. W. The Lay of Havelok the Dane. Oxford: Clarendon, 1915.) で，この神話は強化される．
The manuscript spelling appears . . . to be of a very lawless character, but is easily understood in the light of Professor Skeat's discovery (in 1897) that many of our early MSS . . . abound with spellings which can only be understood rightly when we observe that the scribe was of Norman birth and more accustomed to the spelling of Anglo-French than to that of the native language of the country, which he had acquired with some difficulty and could not always correctly pronounce. (cited in Milroy, p. 26 from Sisam and Skeat, xxxvii--xxxviii)
アングロ・ノルマン写字生によるとされる「奇妙な綴字」には，(1) 語頭の <h> の省略や，逆に非歴史的な <h> の挿入，(2) <wh> の代用としての <w> (ex. wat) ，(3) <sh> の代用としての <s> (ex. sal) ，(4) <ht> の代用としての <th>, <cht>, <cth>, <ct>, <t> (ex. rith, ricth) ，(5) <t> の代用としての <th> (ex. with) ，(6) <th> の代用としての <t> (ex. herknet) ，(7) <u>, <wu> の代用としての <w> (ex. wl, hw) ，(8) 語末の <t>, <d> などの不注意による脱落 (ex. lan for land) などがある．
標準英語のイデオロギーに浸かっている目には，中英語の綴字にも uniformity があってしかるべきであり，そこから逸脱しているものは正統でない，したがって正統でない写字生の手によるものに違いないと映るだろう．しかし，現在では，中英語の綴字の研究が進展し，上記のような綴字の変異には体系性のあることがわかっている．
現在，中英語の綴字の研究は，LALME や LAEME を生み出した Edinburgh 学派を中心に，盛んになされている．言語にとって variation が常態であり不可欠であるということは，案外と，近代以前の言語状況を眺めることによってこそ，容易に理解できるのではないだろうか．関連して，[2012-08-08-1]の記事「#1199. なぜ英語史を学ぶか (2)」も参照．

英語の綴字と発音の関係には1対1ならぬ多対多の対応例が無数にあるが，<o> の綴字で [u] の母音を表わす例はないのかという質問が院生より出された．その場ですぐに思いつく例はなかったが，これは思いつきを待つというよりは，考えるべき，調べるべき問題である．考えるべきというのは，絞り込みをかける方法がいくつかありそうだからだ．まず，現代英語で奥舌高母音 /ʊ/ は最も頻度が低い短母音である（[2012-02-13-1]の記事を参照）．これで，例となる単語の絶対数は少なそうだという予測が立つ．
次に，この母音をもつ単語を思い浮かべてみる．すぐに挙がってくるのは push, put, pull などの <u> をもつグループと，book, foot, look などの <oo> をもつグループである．前者は古英語 /ʊ/ = <u> の関係が現代英語まで連綿と継承されてきた例である．この母音は一般的には1600年くらいまでに中舌化を経て，現代英語へ続く /ʌ/ を出力したが，主に唇音と /l/ や /ʃ/ に挟まれた環境では，上の例のように中舌化を経なかった．「唇音に後続する環境」をヒントに，標題の質問に対応するような例外がないだろうかと考えてみると，1つ思いつくことができた．古英語 wulf に由来する wolf の母音（字）である．前者は，綴字で縦棒 (minim) の連続する環境を避けるために <u> を <o> へ書き換えたという中英語の一般的な綴字習慣でうまく説明される例である．w を <uu> と綴る書記習慣では，wolf は <uuulf> として実現されてしまい，ひどく読みにくい．そこで，せめて <uuolf> として紛らわしさを減じた，ということである (Upward and Davidson 59) ．この <u> を <o> で代用する習慣については，[2009-12-06-1]の記事「#223. woman の発音と綴字」や[2009-07-27-1]の記事「#91. なぜ一人称単数代名詞 I は大文字で書くか」でも取り上げた．とここまで書いて，woman の第1母音（字）も標題の質問に対するもう1つの答えであることに気づいた．
続いて，<oo> をもつグループを考えてみよう．このグループが示唆する音韻史は，/oː/ → （大母音推移） → /uː/ → （短化） → /ʊ/ という変化である．この音韻変化をたどりながらも綴字のほうは典型的な <oo> に落ち着かず，<o> を取っているような例を探せばよいことになるが，古英語 bōsm に由来する bosom の第1母音（字）がこれに相当する（中尾，p. 111）．第2音節の母音は挿入によるものだが，第1音節の母音の変化は <oo> のグループと歴史をともにしている．
他には，to の弱化した発音の1つとして /tʊ/ がある．

The Auchinleck Manuscript (National Library of Scotland Advocates' MS. 19.2.1) は，中世イングランドの語学，文学，写本，読書文化などを論じる際に最も重要な写本の1つといっていいだろう．今日は，この写本の重要性を何点か指摘したい．以下は，Pearsall and Cunningham のイントロ部の "LITERARY AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MANUSCRIPT" (vii--xi) から要点を抜き出してノートしたものである．
・ 1330--40年という早い時期に作成されており，様々なジャンルのテキストを寄せ集めた写本としては，群を抜いて最初期のものである．
・ 納められているテキストの大多数が，各テキストの現存する最古のヴァージョンを提供している．例外は，nos. 4, 7, 8, 13, 19, 29, 34, 35, 40 のみである．
・ テキストのほとんどが英語で書かれている．例外は，no. 20 の Anglo-Norman の混交体と nos. 8, 10, 36 の Latin の挿入部のみである．Auchinleck MS 以前の編纂もの (Jesus College, Oxford, MS. 29; British Library Cotton Caligula A.ix; Trinity College, Cambridge, MS. 323; Bodleian Library Digby 2; Bodleian Library Digby 85; British Library Harley 2253) には，Anglo-Norman と Latin のテキストも普通に見られた．
・ 以前の編纂もの写本には，主として学者層を対象としたテキストが含まれていた，Auchinleck MS には世俗的で洗練されていないテキストが多く含まれており，新しいタイプの読者層の存在が浮かび上がってくる．
・ テキストのジャンルの幅が広い（全44テキスト）．no. 21 以外はすべて韻文で書かれている．

・ 対象読者層は "popular" とまではいかないが，"the aspirant middle-class citizen, perhaps a wealthy merchant" (viii) だったと想定される．
・ ロンドンの "bookshop" で，複数の写字生が共同作業で作り上げたと考えられる．共同作業は高度に洗練されていたわけではないが，ある程度は組織化されていた．
・ 6人の写字生が以下の分布で共同写本作りに貢献している．scribe 1 が全体の72%を担当している．

壮観である．だが，なぜこんな状況になっていたのだろうか．
一言でいえば，標準スペリングというものがなかったということである．当時は規範となる辞書もなければ，スペリング・マスターのような人物もいない．写字生 ( scribe ) と呼ばれる書き手の各々が，およそ自分の発音に即して綴り字をあてたのである．例えば，イングランド北部・南部の出身の写字生では，方言がまるで違うわけであり，発音も相当異なったろう．そこで，同じ単語でもかなり異なった綴り字が用いられたはずである．さらには，同じ写字生でも，一つの単語が，数行後に異なるスペリングで書かれるということも珍しいことではない．スペリングがきちんと定まっている現代英語から見ると，信じがたい状況である．
英語のスペリングがおよそ現在のような形に落ち着いたのは，近代英語以降である．それも比較的ゆっくりと固まっていった．英語の試験で一字でも間違えたらバツということを我々は当たり前のように受け入れているが，中世の写字生がこの厳しい英語教育の現状を見たらなんというだろうか？
中英語のほうが余裕と遊びがあるようにも思えるが，さすがに515通りは行き過ぎか・・・．そもそも <trghug> なんてどう発音されたのだろうか？
