昨日の記事「#5936. 現代英語の従位接続詞一覧」 ([2025-07-28-1]) で取り上げた従位接続詞 (subordinator = subordinating conjunction) について調べるなかで，従位接続詞を使用する以外にも従位節であることを標示する手段が多々あることを知った．Quirk et al. (§§11.12) が，4つの方法に言及している．
(a) wh- 語
間接疑問文，関係詞節，譲歩節などを導く．具体的には who/whom/whose, which, where, when, whether, how, what, why; whoever, whomever (rare), whichever, wherever, whenever, whatever, however などが用いられる．これらによって導かれる節のなかで主語，目的語，補語，付加語などの役割を果たし，厳密な意味での「接続詞」とはいえないものの，接続詞的な機能を有するとはいえる．
(b) 関係詞 that
接続詞 that とは，統語的な役割が異なる．
(c) 語順倒置 VS
例を見るのが早い．Had I known more, I would have refused the job. のような文の前半部分における倒置は，If I had known more とパラフレーズすることができ，統語的に従位節と同等となる．
Sad though/as I was のような不規則な語順の構文も，これに準じる．
(d) いわゆる「分詞構文」
「従位節」の定義にもよるが，The match will take place tomorrow, weather permitting. のように，非定形動詞が用いられるケースを考慮することができる．
ほかには，形式ゼロで導かれる従位節がある．例えば，従位接続詞として，あるいは関係詞としての that は，しばしば省略されるので，形式ゼロとなり得る (ex. I suppose (that) you're right) ．また，評言節では，You're right, I suppose. のように，明示的なマーカーを欠くことが多い．

「#5385. methinks にまつわる妙な語形をいくつか紹介」 ([2024-01-24-1]) と「#5386. 英語史上きわめて破格な3単過の -s」 ([2024-01-25-1]) で触れたように，近代英語期には methoughts という英文法史上なんとも珍妙な動詞形態が現われます．過去形なのに -s 語尾が付くという驚きの語形です．
今回は，methoughts の初期近代英語期からの例を EEBO corpus より抜き出してみました（コンコーダンスラインのテキストファイルはこちら）．10年刻みでのヒット数は，次の通りです．

先日 Voicy heldio にて「#961. 評言節 if you like 「そう呼びたければ」と題して，口語の頻出フレーズ if you like の話題をお届けした．
実は私自身も忘れていたのだが，この問題については hellog で「#4593. 語用論的な if you like 「こう言ってよければ」の発展」 ([2021-11-23-1]) として取り上げていた．その過去の記事でも参照・引用した Brinton の論文を改めて読み直し，if you like および類義表現について興味深い歴史的事実を知ったので，ここに記しておきたい．
Brinton は挿入的に用いられる if you choose/like/prefer/want/wish の類いを "if-ellipitical clauses" (= "if-ECs") と名付けている (273) ．意味論・語用論の観点から，2種類の if-ECs が区別される．1つめは省略されている目的語が前後のテキストから統語的に補えるタイプである ("elliptical form") ．2つめは目的語を前後のテキストから補うことはできず，もっぱらメタ言語的な挿入説として用いられるタイプである ("metalinguistic parenthetical") ．各タイプについて，Brinton (281) が歴史コーパスから拾った例を1つずつ挙げてみよう．
1. I said no, they are copper, but if you choose, you shall have them (1763 John Routh, Violent Theft; OBP)
2. I ought to occupy the foreground of the picture; that being the hero of the piece, or (if you choose) the criminal at the bar, my body should be had into court. (1822 De Quincy, Confessions of an English Opium Eater; CLMETEV)
いずれも choose という動詞を用いた例である．前者は if you choose to have them のようにテキストに基づいて目的語を補うことができるが，後者はそのようには補えない．あくまでメタ言語的に if you choose to say so ほどが含意されている用法だ．
歴史的には，前者のタイプの用例が，動詞を取り替えつつ18--19世紀に初出している．そして，おもしろいことに，後者のタイプの用例がその後数十年から100年ほど遅れて初出している．全体としては，類義の動詞が束になって，ゆっくりと似たような用法の拡張を遂げていることになる．Brinton (282) の "Dating of if-ECs" と題する表を掲げよう．近代英語期の様々なコーパスを用いた初出年調査の結果である．

さらにおもしろいのは，メタ言語的な用法の初例を誇る if you choose は，現在までに人気を失っていることだ．一方，最も新しい if you want もメタ言語的な用法としての頻度は目立たない．安定感のあるのはその他の3種，like, wish, prefer 辺りのである．類義の動詞が束になって当該表現と用法を発展させてきたとしても，後の安定感に差が出たのはなぜなのだろうか．とても興味深い．

if you like/choose/prefer/want/wish/will という表現は，if you wish it to be so called 「こう言ってよければ」ほどの意味で，挿入句として口語でよく用いられる．形式的には if を用いた条件節だが，論理的に帰結節の内容と結びつくわけではなく，あくまでメタ言語的に用いられる．3つほど例文を挙げてみよう．
・ It was, if you like, an error of judgment.
・ He, or She, if you prefer, could do better than that.
・ Music, if you will, is medicine.
このような語用論的な使い方の「if you + 選択動詞」構文を，Brinton (273) は "if-EC" (= if-elliptical clause) と呼んでいる．この構文の発生は比較的新しく，後期近代英語のことらしい．その原型として Call it cruelty if you like, not mercy. のような "call it X" 構文があったのではないかと提案している．構文化 (constructionalisation) を念頭に置いた議論だが，Brinton (290) の論考の結論部を引用しよう．
In conclusion, elliptical if-ECs --- if you choose/like/prefer/want/wish --- all serve metalinguistic and politeness functions in PDE; like and prefer are particularly common in these functions. The clauses make their appearance in the LModE period. Semantically the metalinguistic meanings of if-ECs can be seen as developing from the concrete propositional meaning 'if you choose to do X'. The syntactic derivation of these clauses is problematic, however, because it is impossible to trace their origin back to bipartite (protasis-apodosis) structures where the valency of the verbs is complete. Reconstruction of the complement of the verb in the if-clause proves difficult because of the varied complement structures found historically and the rarity of such structures with metalinguistic meaning. While if-ECs in their propositional meaning typically occur with an explicit apodosis (if you want, open the window), apodoses never occur when the if-ECs function metalinguistically (it's large, even gargantuan, if you wish [*you may say so]). Despite its rather late attestation, a more plausible source for the if-EC is the 'call it X' pattern, which is inherently metalinguistic. Metalinguistic if-ECs may result from constructionalisation of the 'call it X' pattern in conjunction with explicitly metalinguistic if you V- clauses.
語用論と統語論の接点に関する問題の好例というべき話題である．

昨日の記事「#3815. quoth の母音」 ([2019-10-07-1]) で，古風で妙な振舞を示す動詞 quoth を紹介したが，quoth he という句が約まって間投詞として機能するようになった quotha /ˈkwoʊθə/ なる，もっと変な語も存在する．やはり古めかしい表現だが，引用の後で軽蔑や皮肉をこめて用いられ，「あきれた，まったく，ほんとに，フフン！」ほどを意味する．
OED の quotha, int. によると，初出は次のように?1520となっている．
?1520 J. Rastell Nature .iiii. Element sig. Bvjv Thre course dysshes qd a.
この例のように，初期近代英語では qd a や qda などと省略表記されていたようだ．語用的な効果が感じられる近現代からの例を，もう少し挙げておこう．
・ 1698 Unnatural Mother iv. 33 Hei, hei! handsom, kether! sure somebody has been rouling him in the rice.
・ 1720 W. Congreve Love for Love v. i. 115 Sleep quotha! No, why you would not sleep o'your wedding night!
・ 1884 R. Browning Mihrab Shah in Ferishtah's Fancies 99 Attributes, quotha? Here's poor flesh and blood.
・ 1997 T. Pynchon Mason & Dixon 507 It's Emerson and that lot. Ragged children. Swarms, quotha.
quoth he という句が，談話標識 (discourse_marker) へと主観化 (subjectification) した事例として，歴史語用論的におもしろいトピックである．
[2019-01-24-1], [2019-01-25-1] に引き続いての話題．丁寧な依頼・命令を表わす語用標識 (pragmatic_marker) としての please の発達の諸説についてみてきたが，発達に関する2つの仮説を整理すると (1) Please (it) you that . . . などが元にあり，主節動詞である please が以下から切り離されて語用標識化したという説と，(2) if you please, . . . などが元にあり，条件を表わす従属節の please が独立して語用標識化したという説があることになる．(1) は主節からの発達，(2) は従属節からの発達ということになり，対照的な仮説のようにみえる．
Brinton (21) も，どちらかを支持するわけでもなく，Allen の研究に基づいて両説を対比的に紹介している．
An early study looking at an adverbial comment clause is Allen's argument that the politeness marker please originated in the adverbial clause if you please (1995; see also Chen 1998: 25--27). Traditionally, please has been assumed to originate in the impersonal construction please it you 'may it please you' > please you > please (OED: s.v. please, adv. and int.; cf. please, v., def. 3b). Such a structure would suggest the existence of a subordinate that-clause (subject) and argue for a version of the matrix clause hypothesis. However, the OED allows that please may also be seen as a shortened form of if you please (s.v. please, adv. and int.; cf. please, v., def. 6c). Allen notes that the personal construction if/when you please does not arise through reanalysis of the impersonal if it please you; rather, the two constructions exist independently and are already clearly differentiated in Shakespeare's time. The impersonal becomes recessive and is lost, while the personal form is routinized as a polite formula and ultimately (at the beginning of the twentieth century) shortened to please.
語用標識 please の原型はどちらなのだろうか，あるいは両方と考えることもできるのだろうか．この問題に迫るには，初期近代英語期における両者の具体例や頻度を詳しく調査する必要がありそうだ．

丁寧な依頼・命令を表わす副詞・間投詞としての please は，機能的にはポライトネス (politeness) を果たす語用標識 (pragmatic_marker) といってよい．もともとは「?を喜ばせる，?に気に入る」の意の動詞であり，動詞としての用法は現在も健在だが，それがいかにして語用標識化していったのか．OED の please, adv. and int. の語源解説によれば，道筋としては2通りが考えられるという．
As a request for the attention or indulgence of the hearer, probably originally short for please you (your honour, etc.) (see please v. 3b(b)), but subsequently understood as short for if you please (see please v. 6c). As a request for action, in immediate proximity to a verb in the imperative, probably shortened from the imperative or optative please followed by the to-infinitive (see please v. 6d).
考えられる道筋の1つは，非人称動詞として用いられている please (it) you などが約まったというものであり，もう1つは，人称動詞として用いられている if you please が約まったというものである．起源としては前者が早く，後者は前者に基づいたもので，1530年に初出している．人称動詞としての please の用法は，15世紀にスコットランドの作家たちによって用いられ出したものである．これらのいずれかの表現が約まったのだろう，現代的な語用標識の副詞として初めて現われるのは，OED によれば1771年である．

現代的な用法の please が，いずれの表現から発達したのかを決定するのは難しい．原型となりえた表現は上記の2種のほかにも，そこから派生した様々な表現があったからである．例えば，ほぼ同じ使い方で if it please you (cf. F s'il vous plaît), may it please you, so please you, please to, please it you, please you などがあった．現代の用法は，これらのいずれ（あるいはすべて）に起源をもつという言い方もできるかもしれない．
秋元 (162) より「中英語から現代英語における認識動詞の種類と頻度」の表を掲げよう．表中 (p) は "personal"，(i) は "impersonal" の用法を示す．なお，この表は「各時代で扱われた動詞を頻度順におおざっぱに示したもの」とのことである．

1. think と know が一貫して多く使われている．
2. suppose は15世紀には最も多く使われたが，その後再び18世紀以降に多くなっていった．
3. believe は中英語 (Chaucer)，15世紀にはほとんど使われなかったが，17世紀以降多く使われるようになった．
4. guess は一貫してそれほど多くはない．
5. witen, wene, wot は17世紀ごろを境に使われなくなった．
6. trowe も17世紀ごろを境に使われなくなった．またこの動詞はほとんど as ? の形で使われた．
7. 表にははっきりとは表れていないが，fancy は現代英語では使われなくなった．
秋元 (170) は，これらの動詞の通時的な盛衰を，意味場 (semantic_field) を巡る競合と位置づけている．
witan, wene の衰退は think の増大が関係し，また know の増大の結果でもあると考えられる．Fancy は17世紀ごろからしばらく使われていたが，20世紀に入ると，epistemic phrase として使われなくなったのは，imagine などの動詞に追いやられたり，あるいはその語自身が他の用法（fancy restaurant のような名詞，形容詞的用法）を発達させたからであると考えられる．逆に競合関係が保たれているのは，語同士がいわば棲み分けを行っており，そのバランスの上に機能しているからだと考えられる．Think, believe, suppose, know, guess の comment cl はそのような棲み分けられた状態において機能しているからであろう．
認識動詞という高頻度の形式だけをとっても，通時的に種類や頻度を追ってみることで，意味の場の競合というダイナミックな現象が観察されることに感心した．
