■ #4321. あまり知られていない前置詞 anent (= about) を紹介 [preposition]

　古英語に由来する anent なる前置詞を紹介します．「?に関して」 (about, concerning) を意味する古風，戯言的，あるいはスコットランド方言の前置詞として，次のように使います（OED の anent, prep. and adv. の例文より）．

　語源をひもとくと，古英語の on emn/efen (= on even [ground]) にさかのぼります．「?と同じ平面で，並んで」ほどの原義から発達したものです．このような一般的な原義だったので，この前置詞（副詞も兼ねる）が歴史的に担ってきた意味範囲は広く，「?に面して」「?の間近に」「?と並んで」「?といっしょに」「?に反して」など様々です．意味変化の辞書を編纂した Room にも，見出しが立てられています．

anent (concerning)
This now old-fashioned word, used mostly humorously ('I would like a word anent the procedure here'), originally meant 'in company with' in Old English, a sense which survived in dialect use down to the nineteenth century. It also meant 'facing', 'towards', as in the Voiage of Sir John Maundevile (1366), which tells of 'Wylde Bestes' that 'slen and devouren alle that comen aneyntes hem'. However, the word does still have some Scottish usage in these senses, as well as the general one of 'concerning'.

　中英語期には多義でごく普通に使われていた前置詞なので，MED の anent(es (prep.) にもたくさんの例文が挙げられています．形態的にも，onefent, onevent, anempt(es, anem(p)st; onent(es, onence, onon(t, anundes, anen, anend(es, anintice, anens(t, anence, enent(es, enens, inent(es, inence などと様々に記録されています．
　もともとは古英語 efen に由来する前置詞であり，諸形態の語尾に現われる t, s, d のような子音字や，その組み合わせは非語源的な要素ということになります．前置詞，副詞，接続詞という語類にこれらの子音を含む非語源的な語尾が添加されるということは英語の歴史ではしばしば起こっており，本ブログでも様々に取り上げてきました．この話題については，こちらの記事セットをご覧ください．
