■ #3631. なぜ「?に行ったことがある」は have gone to . . . ではなく have been to . . . なのか？ [sobokunagimon][perfect][be]

　「行く」は go であり，「?したことがある」という経験の意味は現在完了「have + 過去分詞」で表わすということであれば，「?に行ったことがある」は普通に考えて have gone to . . . となりそうだが，一般的には have been to . . . であると習う．これは私もずっと不思議に思っていた．だが，フレーズとして，構文としてそのようになっているのだと言い聞かされてきたので，それ以上の質問はしてこなかった．だが，改めて考えてみて，やはり謎である．
　have gone to . . . は「行ったことがある」という経験ではなく，「行ってしまった（その結果，ここにはいない）」という結果の意味になると，しばしば言われる．ここから，現在完了の経験用法と結果用法の形式がバッティングしないよう，前者には区別された形式 have been to . . . が用いられるのだ，という理屈が成立しそうである．もちろんこの説明はある程度まで納得できる．しかし，構文上の "blocking" とでも呼ぶべき，このような共時的かつ機能的な説明原理は，アドホックのきらいがあるように思われる．1つの機能に対して1つの形式を対応させようという言語の一般的指向については理解できるとしても，その形式がなぜとりわけ have been to . . . でなければならなかったのかという個別の問題については，何もヒントを与えてくれないからだ．また，アメリカ英語における事実として，have gone to . . . が経験の意味を表わすケースもある．たとえば，小西 (568) より I took a scuba course in college and I've gone a few times to the Caribbean. なる例文をあげておこう．
　もちろん，歴史的にひもとけば疑問が解消するかといえば，ことはそう簡単ではないようだ．今のところ，（少なくとも私には）答えらしきものは見出せていない．しかし，歴史の事実を与えられれば，疑問をみる視点は明らかに変わってくる．というのは，そもそも「?に行ったことがある」を意味する have been to . . . という形式は比較的新しい18世紀の産物であり，それ以前には用いられていなかったようだからだ．なぜ18世紀に現われたのか，そしてなぜとりわけその形式が選ばれることになったのか．これは共時的な理論英語学ではなく通時的な歴史英語学の話題である．
　OED は be, v. の 8c に，この用法が取り上げられている．

c. With to and a noun: to have been present (in a place, esp. for some purpose, or at an event or special occasion); to have gone to visit (and returned from) a place.
   Apparently rare before the second half of the 18th cent. (when it occurs frequently in the usage of Fanny Burney).

　説明にあるとおり，18世紀後半に Fanny Burney (1752--1840) が頻繁に用いたことが，この用法の実質的な走りとなったようだ．これは今後追いかけていく必要がありそうだ．いずれにせよ，静的な be と，移動およびその目的地を含意する動的な to とが直接結びつくという違和感はぬぐいきれない．当面の仮説として，顕在化していない go の亡霊を想定せざるを得ないのではないかとだけ述べておきたい．
