■ #4339. American Dialect Society による2020年の "Word of the Year" --- Covid [ads][woy][covid][shortening][lexicology][neologism]

　少々遅ればせながらの話題たが，American Dialect Society による2020年の Word of the Year を紹介しよう．案の定 Covid である．
　1年ちょっと前には存在すらしなかったこの単語が，今や世界で最もよく使われる語の1つとなった．問題のウィルスを Covid-19 と WHO が命名したのが2020年2月のこと．その後すぐに Covid と短縮され，単体で用いられるだけでなく，Covid crisis, Covid relief, Covid vaccine のような複合語の部分としても広く用いられるようになった．詳細はこちらのページをどうぞ．さらに詳しくは，こちらのプレスリリース (PDF) も参照．
　このプレスリリースより，受賞を逃した他のノミネート語を，その定義とともに挙げてみよう．Covid 絡みのものが圧倒的に多い．

　・ Covid: shorthand for Covid-19, the name given to the disease caused by infection from novel coronavirus; also used more broadly to refer to the pandemic and its impacts
　・ 2020: used to sum up chaotic and despondent feelings inspired by the year’s events
　・ antiracism: the practice of actively working to prevent or combat racism
　・ Before Times: the time before the beginning of the pandemic (followed by Now Times or After Times)
　・ BIPOC: acronym for Black, Indigenous and People of Color or Black and Indigenous People of Color
　・ doomscrolling: obsessively scanning social media and websites for bad news
　・ pandemic: epidemic over a wide area affecting a large proportion of the population
　・ social distancing: keeping away from others as much as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus
　・ unprecedented: never having happened, existed, or experienced before
