■ #4516. なぜ言語には男女差があるのか --- Chambers の新説 [gender][gender_difference]

　標題は社会言語学で最も注目されてきた（そして現在も注目されている）話題の1つであり，本ブログでも様々に扱ってきた．「#1361. なぜ言語には男女差があるのか --- 征服説」 ([2013-01-17-1])，「#1362. なぜ言語には男女差があるのか --- タブー説」 ([2013-01-18-1])，「#1363. なぜ言語には男女差があるのか --- 女性＝保守主義説」 ([2013-01-19-1])，「#3455. なぜ言語には男女差があるのか --- 3つの立場」 ([2018-10-12-1]) をはじめ，gender や gender_difference の各記事を参照されたい．
　Sharma の論考を通じて知ったのだが，著名な社会言語学者 Chambers が言語と性に関して，従来の説を再構築した新説を発表しているらしい（新説とはいっても Chambers (2009) のもので，私がアップデートしていなかっただけ）．Sharma (236) からの孫引きで失礼するが，Chambers (138) が2つの仮説を提示している．

a. GENDER-BASED VARIABILITY (social organization)
   "[I]n societies where gender roles are sharply differentiated such that one gender has wider social contacts and greater geographical range, the speech of the less circumscribed gender will include more variants from the contiguous social groups".
b. SEX-BASED DIFFERENCE (biology)
   "[T]he neuropsychological verbal advantage of females results in sociolinguistic discrepancies such that women use a larger repertoire of variants and command a wider range of styles than men of the same social groups even though gender roles are similar or identical".

　確かに従来の言語と性に関する説に比べて，社会学的にも生物学的よりも一般化された仮説の設定となっている．
