■ #4539. アングロサクソン人名の構成要素 [onomastics][personal_name][anglo-saxon][oe]

　古英語のアングロサクソン人名の構成原理は，西ゲルマン語群の遺産を受け継いだものである．古英語の通常の単語が人名要素としても用いられるが，1要素からなるもの (monothematic) と，2要素からなるもの (dithematic) がある．前者は Hengest (stallion), Frōd (wise), Hild (battle), Bēage (ring) などに代表されるが，圧倒的に多いのは後者である．2要素を組み合わせることにより異なる名前を量産できるからだ．
　要素の種類に関する限り，第1要素 (prototheme) のほうが第2要素 (deuterotheme) よりも多い．名詞か形容詞が要素となり得るが，そこには意味的な傾向が認められる．主要なタイプを挙げよう (Coates (319--20)) ．

　・ 所属集団や忠誠を表わすもの: Swæf- (Swabian), þēod- (nation)
　・ 肉体的・道徳的な「力」に関わるもの: Beald-/-beald (brave), Weald-/-weald (power), Beorht-/-beorht (bright), Æðel- (noble), Cūð- (famous), -mǣr (famous)
　・ 戦士の生活に関わるもの: Hild-/-hild (battle), Wīg-/-wīg (battle), -brord (spear), -gār (pear), Beorn- (warrior), Wulf-/-wulf (wolf; warrior), Here-/-here (army), Sige-/-sige (victory), Ēad- (prosperity, treasure); Rǣd-/-rǣd (counsel), Burg-/-burg (pledge), Mund-/-mund (hand; protection), -helm (protection; helmet)
　・ 平和に関わるもの: Friðu-/-frið (peace), Lēof- (dear), Wine-/-wine (friend)
　・ 宗教的なもの（非キリスト教）: Ōs- (deity), Ælf- (elf), Rūn-/-rūn (secret, mystery)
　・ その他: -stān (stone), Eorp- (red), Ēast- (east)

　これらの要素はアングロサクソン文化のキーワードとしてみることもできるだろう．
