■ #4650. 抽象名詞は形容詞に修飾されると可算名詞になりやすい？ [noun][countability][adjective][article][sobokunagimon]

　昨日の記事「#4649. 可算名詞と不可算名詞の区別はいつ生まれたのか？」 ([2022-01-18-1]) と関連して，ゼミ大学院生が興味深い疑問を振ってくれたので，ここで考えてみたい．
　通常，抽象名詞は不可算名詞として不定冠詞 a(n) を取らないが，形容詞で修飾される場合には具体性を帯び，不定冠詞を伴うことがあるといわれる．例を挙げれば，"Ours was a very happy marriage." "The book was a great success." のようなケースである．
　一方，形容詞を伴っても原則として不定冠詞を取らない「頑固な抽象名詞」もある．院生が言及してくれた『ロイヤル英文法』 (93) を参照していみると，次の語が列挙されていた．確かに good advice, remarkable progress, bitter weather などと不定冠詞は取らない．

advice, applause, behavior, conduct, damage, fun, harm, homework, information, luck, music, news, nonsense, progress, weather, wisdom, work

　この辺りの問題には合理的な説明を施すことは難しいようだ．Quirk et al. （§5.59）によると，不定冠詞が付き得る例文が3つ挙げられている．

Mavis had a good education.
My son suffers from a strange dislike of mathematics. <ironic>
She played the oboe with (a) remarkable sensitivity.

　このようなケースで不定冠詞が付き得る条件ははっきりしておらず，あくまで次のような場合には付きやすいという緩い傾向が指摘できるにとどまる．

(i) the noun refers to a quality or other abstraction which is attributed to a person;
(ii) the noun is premodified and/or postmodified; and, generally speaking, the greater the amount of modification, the greater the acceptability of a/an.

　標題が相当に難しそうな問題であることが分かってきた．
