No matter how much we modify Haugen's criteria to accommodate a different age, it is difficult to see how we can describe Ælfrician Old English as a standard language. This is not to deny the validity of Gneuss's remarks in general, but it does seem as if he misunderstood their import. There is a viable alternative. This is to claim, following Smith (1996: 65--7), that we are dealing, in the case of Ælfric, with a focused language, rather than a standard language. the mark of a focused language is that rather than having fixed, codified forms, it contains a small amount of internal variation and as such it attract other varieties which have further variations of their own. But these other varieties then tend to adopt at least some of the forms of the focused and more prestigious language.
