■ #4988. 感嘆符の英語での呼び名 [exclamation_mark][punctuation][johnson]

　「#4986. 日本語で増えてきている感嘆符」 ([2022-12-21-1])，「#4987. 英語の感嘆符の使いすぎ批判は19世紀から」 ([2022-12-22-1]) と続けて感嘆符 "!" の話題を取り上げてきた．日本語では「感嘆符」のほか「びっくりマーク」「雨だれ」「しずく」「エクスクラメーションマーク」「エクスクラメーションポイント」などの呼び名があるようだが，英語でもいくつかの呼称がある．OED の exclamation, n. と admiration, n. より次の通り．合わせて初例も示す．

4c. note of exclamation, point of exclamation, also (originally U.S.) exclamation mark, exclamation point: a punctuation mark (!) indicating an exclamation; ; cf. note (also mark, point, †sign) of admiration at ADMIRATION n. Phrases 2. Also figurative.

　admiration 系列の呼称は現在ではほとんど使われないようだが，英語史での初出は exclamation 系列よりも早い．フランス語 admiratif からのインスピレーションのようだ．
　1755年の Johnson の辞書では，感嘆符は EXCLAMATION の項の第3語義として挙げられている．



　呼び名と連動して，英語におけ感嘆符の使用の歴史もやはり近代以降のことである．さほど古いわけではない．これは現代的な句読点に一般的にいえることである．関連して「#575. 現代的な punctuation の歴史は500年ほど」 ([2010-11-23-1])，「#2666. 初期近代英語の不安定な句読法」 ([2016-08-14-1]) などを参照されたい．
