goblin mode: a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.

　今年の Oxford Word of the Year に輝いたのは goblin mode なる語（複合名詞）だった．The Guardian の速報をご覧ください．今回からは一般投票も受け付けての選語だったようで，世界中の34万人を超える英語話者が投票し，次点を大きく突き放しての圧勝だったとのこと（次点は Metaverse, #IStandWith）．
　2022年，長いコロナ禍の生活における規範遵守に疲れ果てた人々が，SNSなどに理想の自分の姿をアップするのに飽き，むしろだらしない本当の自分をさらけ出す傾向が現われ，共感を呼んだ．ここにはウクライナ戦争も影を落としているかもしれない．"goblin mode" に入った自堕落な人々の姿が人気を博す時代が来るとは！
　この語は2009年にツイッター上に初出していたが，今年の2月に一気にバズワードとなった．Oxford University Press は，この語の流行の背景について次のようにコメントしており興味深い．時代を映す鏡というわけだ．

Seemingly, it captured the prevailing mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to 'normal life', or rebelled against the increasingly unattainable aesthetic standards and unsustainable lifestyles exhibited on social media.”

　goblin は人間にいたずらを働く，醜い小人の妖精のことである．今回の流行語は「小人物である自らの堕落した醜い姿」を goblin に重ね合わせたという理解でよいだろうか．ただし，完全にゴブリンになってしまうわけではなく，ゴブリン風のモードに一時的に入っているだけ，という含みがあり，希望が見えなくもない．
　goblin 自体の語源には諸説あるようだ．OED の語源解説を読んでみよう．

Apparently < Old French gobelin (late 12th cent. in an isolated attestation; subsequently in Middle French (a1506 as gobellin); French gobelin), apparently ultimately < ancient Greek κόβαλος rogue, knave, κόβαλοι (plural) mischievous sprites invoked by rogues, probably via an unattested post-classical Latin form; the suffix is probably either Old French -in or its etymon classical Latin -īnus -INE suffix¹. Compare later (apparently < Greek) post-classical Latin cobalus, covalus, kind of demon (16th cent.).

Compare (apparently < French) post-classical Latin gobelinus (first half of the 12th cent. in a British source).

　おそらく究極的にはギリシア語の「ごろつき」を意味する語に遡り，（ラテン語を経て）フランス語から英語に入ってきたものだろうという．英語での初出は1350年以前．
　『英語語源辞典』によると，異説とともにおもしろい解説が与えられている．

1100年ごろフランスの町 Evreux に出没したという妖精は，中世ラテン語で gobelīnus と名付けられたが，これは (O)F gobelin による造語とも考えられる．ほかに，人名 Gobel (cobalt と同根か）に指小辞 -et のついたものとする説や，MHG kobolt (G Kobold) 'kobold' が OF を通じて借用されたとする説などがある．

　まさか中世のゴブリンたちも現代の人間界でバズワードになるとは思っていなかっただろうなぁ．
