■ #784. 歴史言語学は abductive discipline [abduction][language_change][abduction]

　[2011-04-24-1]の記事「語源学の自律性」で触れた abduction（仮説形成）という推論は，語源学ばかりでなく歴史言語学全体に当てはまる．言語変化の「なぜ」の問題に対する歴史言語学者の態度は，とりわけ abductive にならざるをえない．多くの場合，その解はおそらく複合的である．すべての要因を網羅することはできないし，要因間の関係や各要因の重みを明らかにすることもしばしば困難である．それでも，あえて最重要と思われるいくつかの要因を取り出し，それに焦点を当て，合理的な説明を試みるのが歴史言語学の役目である．
　以下の一節を書いたことがある．

It is to be admitted that any answers to the "how" and "why" will only be plausible or provisional because historical linguistics is an abductive discipline (Andersen; Anttila 196--98, 285--86). This means that the suggested description and explanation of the language change is a reasoned inference made with reference to universals such as human experience, human nature, and culture, and to observed facts. The number of possible inferences made in this way is theoretically infinite, and therefore the best that historical linguists can offer is a subset of the theoretically possible descriptions and explanations. Being methodologically abductive, historical linguistics is different from natural science; it is no less tempting, however, to make such inferences in historical linguistics since it allows for different interpretations for a phenomenon. 　そもそもすべての言語変化に原因・理由があるのか，あるとすればその原因・理由のレベルは生理的か，社会的か，その他か．歴史言語学として，どこまで明らかにできるのか．この問い自体が茫洋としており，心許ない．しかし，ある言語変化の原因・理由を巡って様々な論が提出されること，abductive に議論が進められることこそが，歴史に関わる分野の魅力である．歴史言語学の発展は，演繹 (deduction) でも帰納 (induction) でもなく，かつ恣意的でもない推論としての abduction にかかっている．改めて，abduction の推論の形式は以下の通り（米森, p. 54）．

しかしもしＨが真であれば，Ｃは当然の事柄であろう，
よって，Ｈが真であると考えるべき理由がある．
