■ #2782. 18世紀のフランス借用語への「反感」 [french][loan_word][purism][dryden]

　18世紀は，ヨーロッパにおけるフランス語の威信が高まった時代である．イギリスにおいてもこの傾向は確かにみられ，実際に，18世紀には少なからぬフランス借用語が英語に流れ込んでいる（「#594. 近代英語以降のフランス借用語の特徴」 ([2010-12-12-1])，「#678. 汎ヨーロッパ的な18世紀のフランス借用語」 ([2011-03-06-1])，「#1792. 18--20世紀のフランス借用語」 ([2014-03-24-1]) を参照），
　中英語期の大量借用とは比べるべくもないが，英語史においてフランス語が再び威信を取り戻した1つの時代ではあった．しかし，この世紀は比較的保守的で渋好みの新古典主義時代（Augustan Period) にも相当しており，とりわけその前半期には外来語への「反感」を示す声も一部から漏れていたというのも事実である．一般に，外来のものが大好きという向きが多い時代には，一方で大嫌いという向きも必ず現われるものである．語彙の借用を推進する人々がいれば，語彙の純粋さ (purism) を保とうと運動する保守的な論客も現われるというのが，古今東西の通例である．以下，この時代の状況を，Baugh and Cable (281--82) に引用されている当時の原文により伝えたい．
　18世紀に外来語（主としてフランス借用語）の流入に苦言を呈した文人として，例えば Daniel Defoe (1660--1731) がいる．1708年10月10日付の Review では，"I cannot but think that the using and introducing foreign terms of art or foreign words into speech while our language labours under no penury or scarcity of words is an intolerable grievance." と述べている．
　それよりも少し前の1672年のことだが，John Dryden (1631--1700) も Dramatic Poetry of the Last Age のなかで英語におけるフランス語の乱用を非難している．

I cannot approve of their way of refining, who corrupt our English idiom by mixing it too much with French: that is a sophistication of language, not an improvement of it; a turning English into French, rather than a refining of English by French. We meet daily with those fops who value themselves on their travelling, and pretend they cannot express their meaning in English, because they would put off on us some French phrase of the last edition; without considering that, for aught they know, we have a better of our own. But these are not the men who are to refine us; their talent is to prescribe fashions, not words.

　Addison (1672--1719) も，1711年に Spectator (no. 165) で次のように述べている．

I have often wished, that as in our constitution there are several persons whose business is to watch over our laws, our liberties, and commerce, certain men might be set apart as superintendents of our language, to hinder any words of a foreign coin, from passing among us; and in particular to prohibit any French phrases from becoming current in this kingdom, when those of our own stamp are altogether as valuable.

　語彙の純粋さを巡る問題の常として，借用語使用を批判する論客が人々の言語使用に影響を与えることは，ほとんどない．18世紀の場合も例外ではなく，彼らは苦言こそ呈したが，ほぼ効き目はなかったのである．
