■ #815. polysemic clash? [homonymy][polysemy][homonymic_clash]

　同音異義衝突 ( homonymic clash ) について関心があり，homonymic_clash の各記事で話題にしてきたが，"homonymic clash" という術語の陥穽に言及したい．
　[2010-02-07-1]の記事「homonymy, homophony, homography, polysemy」で触れたように，homonymy と polysemy を区別する境界線はしばしば不明確である．light （軽い）と light （色が薄い）は語源学者にとっては別々の語であり homonyms の話題だが，話者が意味のつながりを感じるのであれば，その話者にとっては polysemes である．反対に，flower と flour は語源学者にとっては同一語根の2つの綴字上の現われであり polysemes にすぎないという議論が可能かもしれないが，一般の話者にとっては別々の語であり homophones とみなされている．仮に学術的に両者の間に境界線を引き得たとしても，意味変化を含む言語変化の担い手はあくまで一般の話者であり，言語変化においては，かれらの言語感覚こそが決定的である．
　homonymy と polysemy の区別が曖昧であるということは，homonymic clash と polysemic clash の区別も曖昧だということである．「軽い」の意味で light を使うのに躊躇する話者は，誤解を避けるために代わりに light weight を用いるかもしれないが，ここで起こっていることは homonymic clash 回避の行動なのか，polysemic clash 回避の行動なのか線引きが難しい．
　あまりに多義的な語は，負担過多を解消するかのように語義のいくつかを消失させたり，場合によっては語そのものを廃用にすることがある．例えば，Holthausen は古英語の ār は "honor, dignity, glory, reverence, mercy, favor, benefit, prosperity, revenue" などの互いに関連するが異なる語義を担っていたが，この機能過多が原因で廃用になったのではないかと示唆している (Menner 243) ．もし事実であれば，これは polysemic clash による結果の語の消失ということになるだろう．
　homonymy と polysemy の用語上の区別にこだわらずに衝突の現象を捉えなおせば，衝突の問題が単発の「おもしろい」事例なのではなく，語の意味変化の原理にかかわる重要な論題であることがわかる．Menner (243--44) の同趣旨の言及が的を射ている．

From the point of view of the speaker ignorant of origins, the embarrassment and confusion which is caused by multiplicity of meanings is likely to be as great when a form represents two or more etymologically distinct words as when it represents one. Most students of homonyms and most semanticists pay little attention to this fact, but Jespersen pertinently remarks that 'the psychological effect of those cases of polysemy, where "one and the same word" has many meanings, is exactly the same as that of cases where two or three words of different origin have accidentally become homophones'. Because of this relationship, the conflict of homonyms should not be considered a merely curious and abnormal phenomenon, differing from other linguistic processes. The study of homonymic interference involves the whole problem of the word as an entity and illustrates some fundamental principles of semantics.
