■ #806. what with A and what with B [interrogative_pronoun][adverb][idiom]

　what with A and (what with) B という構文がある．文頭や文末で「AやらBやら（の理由）で」と（通常よくない）理由を列挙するのに用いられる．いくつかの辞書では "spoken" や "informal" とレーベルが与えられている．以下に例文を挙げるが，最後の例のように，and で列挙されないケースもあるようだ．

- What with the wind and the rain, the game was spoiled.
- What with drink and (what with) fright he did not know much about the facts.
- What with storms and all, his return was put off.
- What with one thing and another, I never get any work done.
- What with the cold weather and my bad leg, I haven't been out for weeks.
- She couldn't get to sleep, what with all the shooting and shouting.
- They've been under a lot of stress, what with Joe losing his job and all.
- I'm very tired, what with travelling all day yesterday and having a disturbed night.
- The police are having a difficult time, what with all the drugs and violence on our streets.
- What with the freezing temperatures, they nearly died.

　『ランダムハウス英和辞典』ではこの what は副詞として「《with を伴って》いくぶんは,ひとつには,…やら(…やら)で.」と解説がつけられている．要するにこの what は "partly" 「いくぶん，部分的に」ほどの意味を表わしていると考えてよい．では，この副詞用法の what の起源は何か．
　それは不定代名詞としての用法に遡る．疑問代名詞の what は，古くから「何か」 "something" の意の不定代名詞としても用いられていた．この不定代名詞用法の名残は「あることを教えてあげるよ」を意味する現代の慣用表現 I'll tell you what. や You know what? に見られる．この "something" に相当する語法が副詞として転用され，「いくぶん，多少なりとも」の意味を生じさせた．現代の不定代名詞 something 自体も，以下の例文に見られるように副詞的な用法を発達させてきているので，比較できるだろう．

- The song sounded something like this.
- The sermon lasted something over an hour.
- He was snoring something terrible last night

　OED の "what" D. II. 2. (b) によると，with だけでなくかつては for とも構文をなしたようだが，現在では後者は行なわれていない．細江 (114--15) の例文と注も参照．
