■ #1381. "interventionist" sociolinguistics [sociolinguistics][linguistic_imperialism]

　標題は，「介入主義」社会言語学とでも訳せるだろうか．Wardhaugh (15) の用いている用語で，近年，この分野での研究が増えているという．Wardhaugh 自身は，引用符でくくっていることから示唆されるように，この分野をやや否定的にとらえている．
　Wardhaugh (15) によれば，「介入主義」社会言語学者は，言語研究を通じて社会の不平等や不正義が生み出されるメカニズムを明らかにし，よりよい社会を作るためにそれらの障害を取り除くことを目指している．その旗手として，Fairclough や van Dijk の名前を挙げている．彼らの報じる "critical discourse analysis" において重要視されているのは，"how language is used to exercise and preserve power and privilege in society, how it buttresses social institutions, and how even those who suffer as a consequence fail to realize how many things that appear to be 'natural' and 'normal,' i.e., unmarked, are not at all so" というような社会問題である (Wardhaugh 15) ．
　Fairclough (6) は，従来の社会言語学は社会と言語のあいだにある本質的な問題に踏み込んでいないと批判する．

Sociolinguistics is strong on "what?" questions (what are the facts of variation?) but weak on "why?" and "how?" questions (why are the facts as they are?; how --- in terms of the development of social relationships of power --- was the existing sociolinguistic order brought into being?; how is it sustained?; and how might it be changed to the advantage those who are dominated by it?). (cited in Wardhaugh, p. 15)

　これは，多分にイデオロギーのこもった社会言語学といってよい．社会言語学が半分社会を対象にしている以上，社会言語学者は完全にイデオロギーから自由の身で研究を行なうことはできないだろう．例えば，広く読まれている Trudgill の社会言語学の概説書でも，10章などは相当な "interventionist" である．とはいえ，正義に訴えることにこだわりすぎると，科学的な探究が妨害されかねない点には注意を要する．
