■ #3504. 助動詞の NICE features [auxiliary_verb][preterite-present_verb][syntax]

　be, do, have などの1次助動詞はもとより may, must, can, will, shall, ought (to), need, dare, used to などの法助動詞も含めたすべての助動詞には，共通する4つの統語・形態・音韻的特徴がある．頭文字をとって NICE features と称される．Coates (1983: 4) を参照している Gramley (186) より引用しよう．

N　direct Negation (should > shouldn't)
I　Inversion in questions (I will > Will I?)
C　Code or reduced forms (I may go > so may you, i.e. without repeating the main verb go)
E　Emphatic affirmation (Must we run? Yes, we múst)

　統語的にはほかにも，伝統的な助動詞は後ろに to 不定詞を従えないという特徴もある．
　形態的にも類似点が多い．may, can, will, shall からは，新しい弱変化過去形が作られてきたという共通点がある (cf. 「#66. 過去現在動詞」 ([2009-07-03-1])）．また，いずれも不定詞，現在分詞，過去分詞の形態を欠いている．
　意味的には多種多様ではあるが，話者の態度や判断，いわゆる modality に関わるものが多い．
